No privacy with kids trampoline in the garden

580 comments  Add a comment

Perhaps it's just me getting old, but what's with this new craze of having a kids trampoline in your back garden?

We will live in pleasant, suburban area where detached four bedroom houses and big(ish) gardens are the norm as a result we fully expect there to be kids knocking around and a modicum of noise emanating from said kids.

Bouncing up and down peering over the fence...

We came home the other day having done a hard day's graft at the office, looking forward enjoy one of those rare summer evenings and to a nice relaxing alfresco dinner, to find a rather large construction protruding over the fence between our house and our next door neighbours.  Fine, says me until two rather large and extremely noisy children were bouncing up and down peering over the fence watching me as I prepared our dinner in the kitchen.

Kids trampoline in the back garden Kids will be kids trampoline or not, I said to myself; despite feeling somewhat uncomfortable and continued to ignore the raucous laughter and gawking, half wishing I was their age again!!  That was until we sat down for our nice alfresco dinner, during which the kids continued to jump higher and higher and higher whilst looking over at us, laughing loudly, pointing at us and commenting to us on what we were eating in VERY loud voices.  This needless to say left us feeling discomfited enough for us to waste the rare summer evening and go indoors to finish our dinner.

What I want to know is:-

Where has this craze come from all of a sudden?
Why oh why do parents insist on putting up these trampoline right next to their neighbours fence or a road?
Does anyone else feel that trampolines are an intrusion of privacy or is it just me? and...
What should I do?

Completely agree we have no privacy and the noise of screaming kids makes our garden unusable

Completely agree that trampolines should be banned in UK gardens. They are a hazard and a nuisance to be quite honest. And no I’m not the grumpy man who hates the kids next door. I’m a mum to 4 boys and was given a trampoline during lockdown (never thought of one prior because our garden is quite small, uneven and my boys are little football lads) but me and my husband have actually dismantled since (for reasons like practicality and space) but also including the grim fact that noise my boys were making on it and their behaviour was just completely unacceptable. Bearing in mind we live in a small terraced house with small gardens with neighbours on both sides and 2 at the back. I’m always wary of how much noise they’re making so I let them
out to play in the garden from 11am-4pm because know they’re super loud even without a trampoline or any balls or toys for that matter and even though only they get about 5 hours a day in the garden that was enough to make both my neighbours and one at the back complain. Prior to lockdown we all got along fine for well over 8 years but now all my neighbours really seem to resent me and my kids which is such a shame and quite upsetting. I honestly think some parents are down right assholes when it comes to trampolines and are rude to just blindly let their kids carry on. Like if you MUST have a trampoline at least move it well away from your neighbour’s boundary wall/ fence and position it out of the way where your kids can’t see into houses of even directly into gardens. Deffo not worth falling out with your neighbours over. Better still ban them altogether ( the trips to A&E during COVID times really ain’t worth it...)

In my case, it's not the small child who's the problem, it's the adult father. Iv'e told him that continually seeing his head and shoulders peering into my kitchen and back garden is an invasion of my privacy. I politely asked him if he would move the 12ft monster further back from my regulatory 2m rear fence to at least stop him peering over the fence. Unfortunately, it's fallen on deaf ears and the moron continues ruin our privacy. I've now in the process of installing free standing trellis screens and rapid climbing plants.

That’s fine if you look after your children but I have neighbours who just drink and smoke while their children do whatever they want and yes the sound of the trampoline squeaking and thudding plus the children screaming is a nightmare

Desperate, what about your mental state? Could you get your doctor to put you on anti-depressants because of the stress, and then complain again? Good luck!

@peed off, Yes I know how you feel. We have a DIY moron living next door suffering with OCD. Twelve years of manic drilling, banging, sawing, etc. Council cannot do anything because of his mental state, even when they try talking to him. Where's the justice?

I hate the damn things, our neighbours have had one rotting away for the last 6 years at least, that doesn't stop the kids, now teenagers, noisily bouncing every evening, after a day of god awful music whilst splashing in the paddling pool. We were hoping the trampoline had lived out its life but now the mother is looking for a new one, add the forever barking dog to the mix and you can see the summer I'm in for

My neighbor did the same thing. I wanted to report them to their homeowners insurance company but apparently there is no way of finding out who is the company.

I’ve the same problems and the answer you can’t do anything. Local police told me it’s their garden and they can put a trampoline anywhere they like.

I totally agree, all trampolines should be banned from gardens. We have requested our neighbours move it away from our fence as we live in terraced housing with very little privacy as it is & now we have to watch and listen to the child bouncing up and down.

I totally agree, i live in a small bungalow and she has put a huge trampoline near the boundary wall. She is a Mother of 3 boys, 14: 15 and 13 as well as herself use it and because her very big garden is higher than mine they can see into my conservatory and through to my kitchen. I lost my Husband in January 2020 and really could do without this.
