Fashion - how young people are being conned again

22 comments  Add a comment

One of the most successful cons took place in the 18th Century, when older men and women dictated fashions to favour themselves.  The most cunning of all their ploys was to decree that everyone should wear white or silver wigs.  Such wigs eliminated youth's advantage over old age because, for a century, practically everybody went around looking 60 to 80.

In the 19th Century, Beau Brummell killed the senseless fashion by discarding his wig and the younger generation was at last able to take advantage of their youthful looks.

Centuries later and young people are being conned again but this time the target is the handsome and beautiful among them.  Latest fashions dictate that the young should make themselves look as ugly and deformed as possible, if they wish to appear cool.  As a result, we endure surely the most off-putting styles of all time.

A girl with a pierced tongue and a ring Rings, piercings, tattoos, dyed hair, stubble... fashion?

Rings are stabbed through tender parts of the anatomy, scarring faces and bodies; irremovable tattoos disfigure perfect flesh; "designer stubble" (surely the most slovenly fashion of all time) adds 10 years to a man's age; hair is dyed in hideous shades; and, to finish the spectacle, all wear the drabbest, most unflattering clothing ever seen on the planet.

It's understandable that the plain and ugly among us wish to bring good-looking people down to their own unattractive levels.  But why on earth do the handsome and the beautiful adopt these fashions and, as a result, throw away the best asset they will ever be given?

I live in the Northeast and the fashion is just horrible here. Young boys in your standard SportsDirect kit and young girls wearing makeup thick as hell and pants that are so short that you can actually see their bums. wtf!

Now do I feel conned? No. Why? I like to be individual. I like to have my own bodyart done. There is nothing wrong with tattoos and piercings. And they are not ugly as well, although can be intimidating to some people. Also, I wear dark clothes because I don't want to follow the crowd which seems to be all for the chavvy style of where I live and I have red/auburn hair obtained from dying over past mistakes with henna. And don't you think its insulting to say that ugly people want to bring the handsome and beautiful down? Actually, it's discriminating those who you think are ugly and unattractive.

Oi! Teens go back to your holes in the ground, you are to be seen and not heard, before you get a clip round the ear....Lol, I know how you feel, I was a Punk in the 70s, I used to have to put up with s*t from my elders who were no doubt those weirdly dressed teens called Teddy boys/girls all part and parcel of growing up, been there seen it got the f* T-Shirt (with zips and safety pins)...

that is a absolute load of CR*P to be honest....do you really feel the need to spread rubbish about us teens? its a sign of independence and you know what? we get piercings and tattoos and wear these clothes because guess what? WE LIKE IT!!!! I know plenty of people who dont follow the latest fashions or get piercings and they are perfectly happy, as am i, with my ear piercings and tight clothes and heels and plans for tattoos covering my walls..... I am chatting to my mates about how I cant wait to get paid from my job so I can get my belly pierced, or maybe my ears again.... and oh look, I have a job! I dont get paid much because i'm only 14 but I work hard and alll my money atm is going towards a trip to italy with my school skiing THAT IM PAYING FOR BY MYSELF! i'm responsible, I get good marks in school but I also want time with my mates, shopping, raving, and hanging with my bf... get over it!

I would beg to differ on the best asset being beauty. Looks are transitory, dumb is forever.

It's not a 'con' by any means - these methods of bodyart are made available and people are free to choose if they want to have them on their own bodies. Nobody makes them. I have red hair, tattoos and stretched earlobes, and a pierced lower lip, and do I feel conned? Hell no. I personally like the way they look, and it was my choice, MINE, to have them done.

Sarah, I'm sorry but I do not agree with your "works of art" comment. When I see what may as well be the same celtic designs or bloody dolphins, it ecomes a mass-porduced copy. Art needs to be original.

How do tattoos disfigure exactly? Most of them are works of art and yes they will eventually fade and the skin will wrinkle a little with age but what is better - wrinkly skin or wrinkly skin with art?

And style has absolutely nothing to do with attractiveness whatsoever. You have got your wires crossed!!!

Did you ever considor that a lot of people find tattoos and piercings attractive? I think you may just be too old and set in your ways to understand. Maybe I will be one day too.
