Is there an uglier male fashion than a smart suit worn with an unbuttoned shirt and no tie? Almost invariably displayed on television nowadays by politicians and newscasters attempting to look "cool and with it", the actual result is that we are obliged to stare at several inches of pallid neck, bobbing Adam's apple and sparsely haired chest - thus distracting us from the seriousness of the news story.
this style of undress has largely become the habit of middle aged men...
It's noticeable that this style of undress has largely become the habit of middle aged men (John Prescott is now doing it - heaven help us!). It can't be long, therefore, before style-conscious younger men switch to something more becoming than a smart suit and an unbuttoned shirt.
May I suggest two alternatives to this scruffy fashion? Try the Nehru Jacket which was very popular in the 70's this style of jacket is actually based on the Indian sherwani apparently (see Wikipedia. It's smart, attractive and colourful, not to mention the fact that the high collar covers up those nasty double chins and unattractive wobbly throats perfectly!
Alternatively, how about the exquisitely-tied cravats worn by those 18th-Century dandies? At any rate though, lets loose the scruffy unbuttoned shirt thing and let's bring tasteful good looks back to our television screens!

Do you think there is much difference in having a second button undone (comfort)? I work in an accountants office, and have contact with people.. so have to be careful how I dress. Any advice?

What kind of knot do you wear? You can get away with a lot if you wear a fat windor knot. Even your Mum couldn't tell your top button was undone, lol.
My idea of smartness is: a decent shirt / decent tie / top button undone / double-cuff / good quality suit.
I always wear socks, but maybe will buy some trainer ones over the weekend. Let us know how you get on!

That is a great way of wearing your shirt and tie. Love it! I don't think it would work the same with ordinary collar shirts. Mine are 50/50. I have an ordinary collar shirt on today, but will try it tomorrow. Do you mind wearing shirts and ties? Do you have to wear suits as well. I'm going to get some 'trainer socks' over the weekend :)
I hope you agree with me that the double-cuff shirts are good to wear!
Today, I'm in white double cuff shirt (ordinary collar) / dark pink tie / navy suit. Top button undone with tie down to midway between top and second button. (As the collar is pretty tightish, the gap opens up more.)

when I say form a v I mean put on a spread collar and you will understand, undoe the collar button, hold the corner of the collar and pull them towards your shoulder baldes, then you form a v shape of open flesh. I just push my knot up to the bottom of that exposing the v of open skin. Yes there is no face to face with customers just over the phone. No uniform in place but strict dress code men have to wear a shirt and tie except for the weekends when it is dress down. I tend to wear a double cuff shirst more but I have some button ones as well. On the sockless thing just give it a go, I am suprised that no other blokes do at your office. What kind of work are you in?

What kind of work do you do? When you say a big windsor knot... do you do it like school kids (a short end showing) or normal length, but just a fat knot.
You put your tie in line with the top button or the second button?
I do a hugeish knot... pull my tie up to between my top (undone) button and second (done up) button.
What colour shirts do you wear? Do you wear double-cuff or button ones.....?
ALWAYS spread? or do you have ordinary ones?

If you're in a call centre... does that mean that you have no public interraction? What colour shirts do you wear? Do you wear double-cuff ones or button ones? Do you have a set kinda uniform to wear?
If you are not seen by the public you could be more daring with your collar and tie.
I will consider going sockless, but not perhaps just yet!

I tend to make a big windsor knot leave the top 2 buttons undone but push the knot up so it is on line with the first button it is just a bit looser than one button but without a gaping bit of flesh on show. I always wear spread collars make the knot big, bigger the cooler

I work in a bank call centre I think I look smart I also wear 50/50 with regards to the shirt collar. by pulling it open I mean flatten the collar down to form a V I must admitt looking back 2 butons is a bit much in a spread collar will just stick to one. I can not believe that none of the blokes in your office don't go sockless quite a few do here and that is for a stuffy bank, but it is a very fashinable concious stuffy bank. Why don't you try it andse what the reaction is, it is very normal here

You wear a windsor knot? To what level of looseness do you normally wear yours? How many buttons undone?
Again.... sorry about all these questions...
Read my post to Windsor regarding the socks.
Hey... good to chat

Firstly, let me answer your second point first.... I always wear socks to work... the only time I'm sockless is when I get home from work (ie in the evening) and on holidays (when I never wear them). Oh... also in the shower and in bed!
I see you normally have the top two buttons undone...? What kind of office do you work in to get away with that? LOL
Do you normally wear spread collar shirts, or ordinary collar ones? I'm 50/50. I find that with spread collar shirts it is more obvious that the top button is undone than with wearing ordinary collar ones.
I tend to have just the top button undone.... with two, surely the gap would be bigger? What do you mean about pulling the shirt open?
Sorry about all these questions.... :(
How loose
I don't like that idea, though. Wear a windsor knot tie and pull it as tight as is comfortable, keeping the top button undone. Loads of guys wear their shirts and ties on the train like that.
Keep the top part of your chest shaved!
