People expect window cleaners to work for next to nothing

Does this sound familiar?

"We used to have a nice little man come around on his bicycle with his ladders, and he charged £3 to clean the windows. Anyway, I heard that he ended up in prison for stealing from a customer. I wasn't bothered too much about him going, but then new window cleaner came on the scene. He has a big transit van with a system to clean the windows using pure de-ionised water. He wanted to charge me £18 to clean the windows on our house ! Can you believe that?"

As a well established window cleaner in a fairly large town, it's annoying to say the least when you get a call to price a job and you are met at the door by someone who tries to act like there is a million things more important that they could be doing rather than answering the door for you (even though they called you in the first place).

Window cleaner - we have to earn a living too! Then after examining the windows that need cleaning and checking out the job for time and safety aspects, you deliver your quote and are invariably told "Oh, my last window cleaner only charged £££". To which you ask "What happened to your last window cleaner then?" A common response would be "Oh, he stole some of my stuff and he was arrested..."

It would enter most people's head at this time that maybe the reason he only charged £££ was that he was dodgy, but that conclusion seems to elude some people. In a day and age when everything is more expensive, why do people still assume that you can get a window cleaner to your house to do all your windows for anything for less than the price of a newspaper? Remember, you get what you pay for and if you think you're getting a bargain, you're probably getting more than you bargained for!
