I read an article in the news today about an elderly woman, who was attacked by youths in Salisbury, Wiltshire as she left a chemist shop.  The 81 year old was a victim of “happy slapping”, a craze that has recently swept our country.

I find this sort of thing disgusting and it makes me very angry.  This happy slapping thing is stupid enough, but when the victim is one of our more vulnerable members of society I just see red.

Happy slapping, a new craze

Happy Slapping - A phenomenon said to have originated in south London where gangs of youths known as yoots or rude boys will pick a random passer-by.  One of the gang will then attack this person, whilst another captures the act with their mobile phone.

The media and the parents are as much to blame as are the kids themselves.  Parents nowadays it would seem, don’t know how to teach their kids to respect their elders.  Kids don’t respect their parents, their teachers, the law, and other peoples’ property; in fact they don’t respect anything anymore, not even each other.  What kind of a society are we turning into?  What is it going to be like in ten or twenty years time when these louts grow up?

Are they going to magically learn that there are boundaries to behaviour, and that to go around hitting people is wrong; or, is the more likely scenario one where it’s okay to beat people senseless whether or not it is on camera?  I’m going to be old and possibly vulnerable one day also.  I just hope that by then this stupid and violent happy slapping craze isn’t still a part of every day life.

I’ve pointed the finger at the parents up until now, but I think the media should share some of the blame also.  Do you remember a few years ago the Tango adverts that were on television? These were responsible for a spate of ear slapping incidents in which some children were sent deaf. They were only copying the antics of the big fat orange man in the advert as he “tango-ed” unsuspecting members of the public.  These days, we have shows such as Trigger Happy TV and Jackass to teach our children new forms of violence and stupidity.

Matty you are spot on! I don't fancy standing at the bus stop on my way to work, taking a bullet at point blank range in the liver.

All due to the person stood next to me accidently firing off their handgun.

Jaydee, I rather think of it as a great relief that we don't carry firearms. The only people that tend to carry arms illegally are gang/drug related subhumans and their targets are generally each other.

If the people of this country carried a gun, there would be more people killed each day by negligence than there ever would be crime related.

A nation that permits the carrying of firearms has already hit rockbottom.

Booze has produced a defect in the DNA of the parents who don't care or are too busy. Most kids these days are latch key kids or kids from broken homes. The family unit is a thing of the past. I caught a man stealing from my Dad and called him bad names, my Dad heard me and gave me a good hiding for disrespecting my elders! Even if he was an effing thief! If I caught anyone hitting a Grannie like that, I'd have their guts for garters!

I agree, unfortunately we live in a society where this is ok, vulnerable people are made victims of criminals but also our justice system. But with no real punishment in place what can we expect. Prison is no punishment. sky tv, play-stations, gym equipment degree's and education? Things I can't afford and struggle to pay for they get for free. The amount spent on inmates is higher per head than we spend on the elderly! without a system of punishment, happy slapping etc will get worse. Welcome to lawless Britain!

Unfortunately people in the UK cannot carry firearms. I live in the US and I can guarantee that if I was attacked in such a way by feral beasts they would greatly regret it!

It is not just teenagers, recently I was outside a friends house with my mum when a drunken man in his 50s approached me and tried to make sexual advances, when I told him to not get too close he shouted at me that I was a lesbian and then punched me in the face. It is easy to criticise young people but in my experience those of a more mature generation are not much better. We need to stop calling this happy slapping and refer to it as its proper name- GBH!

Been there, been slapped, slapped back, been punched for slapping back, broke his nose and 2 teeth.....police arrested me for GBH..later dropped....kid got a verbal warning.....yada yada yada.

Another lad to do that to me went flying into a shop. I have no time for ""just avin a laaarf"" after you assult them back.

Ihave a question I would like someone to answere. On a recent visit to my local market, three youths all dressed in the hoody uniform were standing talking when one of them turned around and headbutted a concrete lamppost and then returned to his mates, this must have been some kind of signal for the second one to follow suit, the same ritual was carried out to perfection, however, the third one must have had the active brain cell as he did,nt bother. My question is,could it be some kind initiation that all hoodies have to follow, or could it be that they have to prove to each other exactly how thick they are..

Almost every time it's the parents' fault who exercise no control over their offspring.

I've found something that looks good on a chav. It's called a bin lorry........

Why do you think when I say "Prevention" I am saying that we should "sterilize a generation"? "Vile offspring" indeed, these are young human beings we're talking about here, not animals to be "round up".
Some "Hard time in the forces" is a totally old fashioned approach, 'yes they're causing a bit of trouble so lets just put guns in their hands and send them to war to die!'. Great idea matt.
*A Sad Slapper  16-Jan-2007 20:51

Sad slapper, yes this is true. However, for the current generation having them sterilized so they cannot breed isn't an option anymore because they already have produced these vile offspring. The only option now is to round them up and make them do some hard time in the forces.
