How many times have you driven to work in the morning and either on a dual carriageway or parked at traffic lights looked at the car next to you; only to be confronted by the sight of some Muppet with a mobile phone glued to his or her ear.

It is a sight that is now becoming increasingly common as more people than ever before have mobile phones and people drive to work rather than use the pathetic public transportation system (see previous gripes!). However, a recent study at the Transport Research Laboratory sponsored by insurer Direct Line has provided new evidence that driving and using a mobile phone may be more dangerous than driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The research showed that on average the reactions of the driver were nearly 50% slower than when driving normally and that even using a hands free kit did not completely eliminate the distraction caused by having a telephone conversation whilst driving.

Illegal in nearly 30 countries

Using a hand held mobile phone and driving is illegal in many countries including the UK and those caught in this country are usually prosecuted for dangerous or careless driving. Some MP’s however believe that it should be treated as a separate offence and are currently trying to push bill through parliament banning the use of hand held mobile phones when driving.

It is not just the Nokia wielding maniacs that give me cause for concern. A friend of mine emailed me this morning to tell me about a woman he saw driving at around 100mph in a BMW with her face close to the rear view mirror as she applied her makeup. Also, the number of times I’ve seen a sales rep sitting in his company car either shaving or reading the paper just amazes me.

I will argue against speed camera policy day and night but I support this one fully. A blue tooth unit can be got for £12, no excuse for using the phone in hand. I am sick of the idiots who get on the phone and then llose all spacial awareness.... 3 points in my opinion as this is deadly. Texting 6.

There's no need to worry about anything for the police have it all under control since it became illegal. They are coping very well and catch just about everyone that committs the offence. All is under control along with the child seat regulations.

Read the Government statistics, it's all true!

I am astounded by the sheer volume of drivers passing through the Dartford River Crossing at the tolls who are using their mobile phones - not hands free. I am also astounded that despite being on camera they do not put their phone down. However, the perfect opportunity for the police to instruct the management, or even the management of Le Crossing Co Ltd actually assisting the police by offering the footage to them for prosecution never happens. Despite numerous pleas from the staff.

There's no excuse for driving with a mobile phone in one hand. In essence, we don't really need the things anyway, they're only gossip boxes.....businesses survived well enough without them many years back. The man who said here that his boss would dismiss him if he didnt answer his phone.....I'd tell him to get stuffed (the boss, that is) and get another job. Don't ever let someone like that rule over your life, they aren't worth it.
The other thing is, £1,000 fine isn't steep enough; business users especially need to be hit harder, so to speak. Today's roads are dangerously busy, you need all your wits about you, not all the twits....plenty in Bristol, though!

we think people should use handsfree while driving..The goverment should take a serious action to prevent all those annoying problems...Please don't take the action only when there is abig accident happened...The rule must be applied until the end of our life!!!!

I really agree with 'andy', the more expensive the car the more likely they hold the phone to their ear. They have lots of money , but they can't use their mind well.

Direct Line might have sponsored the research mentioned in this site but they seem curiously coy about taking action against one of the drivers they insure when it was reported to them that this driver had crashed into the side of our car, whilst using her mobile phone. The excuse given for not pursuing this was that it would be difficult to prove the driver was making a call. Funny that! All phone operators have itemised billing that specifies exact time and duration so this could be verified. Maybe Direct Line ought to practice what it preaches - by refusing to insure offenders or by increasing premiums when this happens.

I think that mobile phone car users are pethetic. Fair enought if you are using a hands free kit but to use a mobile is not only risking your life but the lifes of other drivers around you. The government need to do more to protect the lifes of drivers that are sticking to the correct law.
Now that tony blair has left the office Gordan brown should look more indeath to the mobile users problems. We are all at risk due to there indesity.

Getting caught with a mobile phone when driving should be punishable with an on the spot death penalty, one death out weighs several.
is a live really more important that a text to your friend? Why can you simply park the car somewhere before ansering or using your phone or anyother electonic gadgets? Better safe than sorry.I hate Mobile phones. Look how many people have died because of one STUPID invention. Hounestly.. In My Day we had nothing of the sort but we survived? I think Mobile phones should be destroyed. Everybody who reads this please throw.

Also, talking on a phone and smoking a cigarette are completely different safety wise. I used to smoke and a cigarette in your hand doesn't stop you from using your hand on the wheel or changing gear.

When people are talking on a phone, they don't want to interrupt their conversation so they try and do dangerous maneouvres (sharp turns, changing gears while still steering etc) with one hand.

I was nearly side-bashed by someone the other day who was turning into a road I was driving on whilst talking on their phone.

Charlii-X this topic must make you furious. So sorry you've lost 2 people close to you at such a young age.

Roamer Phoner - that's no excuse. If your boss is such a dipstick, then get a hands free set! Holey Moley.... Is it really worth getting points on your license to save a few quid? our Mobile Away.

My boss always phones me when I am in my car. I have to keep my mobile on full-time, even when driving along the motorway. I have been threatened with dismissal if I turn it off. I have to answer that phone, even if I cannot stop.

I use a mobile phone when i'm driving all the time. I don't see what is wrong with it. It is just like smoking when your driving, but that isn't illegal.

Anyone using a mobile phone whilst driving is taking a dangerous risk, as well as breaking the law. One sudden moment of inattention to the road and you could end up killing an innocent person and destoying their family. Just read the news each day to see how many drivers make that mistake.

In addition, you will have some years in prison to think about what you have done, have a long term ban and be required to take an extended driving test. As well, you will have the knowledge that you took someones life. How could you live with that for ever? Switch the mobile off in the car.
