Lorry drivers, how rude and selfish can you be?  When another very slightly faster lorry is overtaking you, why do you have to stay side by side at your cruising speed instead of just throttling back a bit and allowing your "competitor" to pass quickly?

You see this happening all the time on the motorway.  You are driving to your destination minding your own business, then suddenly you hit a load of traffic, you look just ahead of this to see what the problem is and nine times out of ten there are two lorries side by side in some kind of snail’s race to the finish line.  The result is that the cars coming up on this obstacle have to filter by in single file on the outside late.  If you’re really unlucky and it’s only a two lane dual carriage way you can be stuck behind these two duelling HGV’s for quite a few miles.

Traffic congestion on the M6

Two lorries create a rolling roadblock

Why are they so selfish?  I’m not sure who is to blame, be it the overtaking lorry that can’t go fast enough, or the one on the inside that is just being a selfish pig by not letting the other one pass quickly.  Yes I know we all need the goods that lorries transport every day, but I’d rather not follow them up the motorway to their final destination!

This slow overtaking needs to stop as it causes bottle necks on our already choked road system. Two lorries attempting to overtake when neither of them has enough speed effectively creates a rolling roadblock.  This seems like a very dangerous practice to me and should be made an offence, just like undertaking!

Just one more thing.......what makes for a dangerous road is widely ranging speeds combined with a lack of anticipation - some people going fast, others going at the speed limit, others going slowly. HGVs (for the most part) ALL drive at about 55mph on a motorway as our limiters are set to 56mph - it is therefore easy to predict what HGVs will do and when if you're actually paying attention. Cars will range from 50mph to 90mph+ which makes it much harder to predict intentions. So practically all the heavy braking and tailgating, etc is due to car drivers failing to look far enough ahead to anticipate hazards.

You say it creates a rolling roadblock which, in you opinion you claim to be dangerous, if that were the case - why exactly do the police use them in order to create a safe zone? You ought to write to you local constabulary and inform them of this outrageous practice before someone gets really hurt! No? Thought not. Your ridiculous insistence that lorry driver's overtaking is dangerous simply illustrates your own inability to anticipate hazards - if a lorry is gaining on or sitting a very short distance behind one in front, would it not be fair to assume it will want to pass it at some stage? Why don't YOU ease off slightly? You can get back up to speed a lot easier and quicker than an HGV. Even if the following HGV is only doing half an MPH more than the leading it will be past in a matter of 30 seconds or so - is your journey really THAT important?

There is nothing I hate more than being stuck behind some filthy lorry throwing muck all over my car with no opportunity to pass them. They hold me up and frustrate the life out of me. But, and it really is a big BUT (much like the missus) where would we be without them? They are a necessary evil of modern life. We'd all be moaning much more if they were not there to carry all the consumer goods we desire. Leave them alone.

You've obviously never driven a lorry!

Blame the ridiculous 56mph speed limiters which are dangerous!

You'd be surprised how many lorry drivers this annoys. None of us like being hung out to dry in the middle lane. I always back off and let the overtaking truck go, if possible.

akc5150, if you scroll down you will find that I quickly corrected this mistake.

Just a point here, HGV drivers are not allowed on the motorways at all at the weekend (until midnight on sunday)

Don't know where you got THAT from Gainsboroughlad, but you are WRONG!! It is true in France, but not in the UK!

When taking your catagory C or CE licence (new name for HGV 2 or 1) you are TOLD that if another lorry gains distance on you and clearly has greater average speed and is overtaking you, then you MUST back off if he is struggling (maybe on a hill) to get past! I DO this, but alot of drivers that rely purely on their cruise control will just let the truck keep the speed it can... THIS IS WRONG!!!!! HOPEFULLY the soon to be required CPC for EVERY LGV driver might address this problem a little. REMEMBER that ALL lorry drivers also drive their own cars, and get as pissed off as everone else when they get held up by inconsiderate drivers! All that being said.... How many times do YOU EVER let a lorry pull out that is trying to overtake??? If you see a lorry indicating that he wishes to pull out, PLEASE let him do so!! We don't do it for fun ya know!! (Thats why alot of lorries will suddenly indicate and then pull out when there is a gap just about big enough.... Cos if we don't, most cars will speed up and close that gap.... just to save themselves a few seconds)

I am so sick of lorry drivers overtaking other lorries on the motorway. If it is a 3 laned motorway I could perhaps tolerate it but when it is a two laned motorway as so many are, just stay behind the lorry in front of you. You are only supposed to be going 56mph but when you overtake other vehicles without even an iota of consideration for other road users it really grinds my gears!

Unnoticed, thousands of times a day, the lorry driver being overtaking does ease off and allow the overtaking lorry past. Being kept alongside by pig ignorant HGV drivers while overtaking is known "as hung out to dry". As for car drivers attempting to merge with the flow of traffic on a motorway.....you've got a car capable of 100mph+ just put your foot down and MERGE !

Professional car driver
I don't let trucks out if it is not safe for me to, not going to force anyone out of lane 2! Lorry drivers will help each other out more than Joe bloggs as they know how to thank each other. You soon get fed up of doing things without people acknowledging it. On the rare occasion I move out into lane 2 for a car, they usually speed up the second I go to lane 2 so its pointless.
Its not very difficult to join off a slip road in a car though anyway, try something 6 times the length and 44 times the weight, and even then I just use the hard shoulder if I can't merge.

Oh and I would do anything I could to annoy "Plod", have no time for them anymore I'm afriad, wouldn't pi$$ on one if they were on fire, shame as I have a few close friends that are in the filth.

As for indicating I always do, although I wonder if any one pay attention to the signals anyway.Gets tiring showing your intentions onlyfor a tunnel vision driver to cock everything up.

What situations have you had trucks pullout in front of you? You can rarely enter a roundabout or come out a sideroad without upsetting someone but I can't change the laws of physics sadly.
