The main thing that annoys me about today's TV ads is the fact that they now appear to concentrate on making politically correct points instead of selling their products.

A business woman making a telephone call

This particularly applies to the way in which the sexes are now depicted in commercials.  Take a look at how a woman normally appears in such ads.  Almost invariably she will be a smart, intelligent, good-looking person, in full control of her life.

If she has a fault it will only be the mocking, pitying way in which she treats the men in her life.  This is not surprising as such men folk are constantly portrayed as wimps, oafs or cretins.

Now why on earth is it necessary to feature such stereotypes, if not to perpetuate an image of female superiority?  It does absolutely nothing to help sell the product: in fact, this deliberate gender bias produces the opposite effect.

Advertisements which mock and denigrate men are antagonising nearly half of their potential customers.  Presumably the companies involved consider consumers to be such a stupid bunch that they are not aware of the subliminal effect of their sales campaigns.  They are so wrong.  For some time now, members of my family and my friends have joined me in boycotting all goods produced by companies which libel the male sex in this way.  My impression is that this is a growing protest movement.

So, if the directors of companies are puzzled by falling sales, they need look no further than their television ads; which nowadays promote war between the sexes instead of selling their goods.

What about the many adverts that use near naked, young, thin perfect women to sell everything from cars to beer while middle aged or older women are portrayed as idiots or are just invisible and not represented at all?
Or the ads that show women in an orgasmic state of excitement because they have got a stain out of their husband’s shirt?

Or the one with two bearded blokes advertising kitchen paper who are meant to look like women because they have wigs and fake breasts. Because that is all it takes to be a woman isn’t it, fake breasts and make up.

Then there is the one with a man telling a woman she does not know how to haggle and must be single because she has a cat. Stereotyping anybody?
Then there are Michael Winner’s insurance ads where he is always telling women in a patronising manner to “calm down dear”. As in, “its only a plastic duck not a real one”. Women being so stupid that they cannot tell the difference.

There are more ads that are insulting to women than the other way around. Men just don’t notice them.

Oven Brite

"So simple even a man can do it."

I'd like to see the sh*tstorm that would cause if it were changed up a little.

Christ, the only thing that I gather from these comments is that Men are a bunch of pussies. So what if commercials advertise men as morons? I've met plenty of men who act like idiots just to get a laugh. You say that these commercials give men a bad name? I'm pretty sure that any woman who watches tv isn't going to become a hardcore dyke just because a commercial that no one (apparently you guys are the exception) seriously considers for more than a few seconds after the ad has ended "denigrates men." Seriously, this is pretty funny considering how much you're pissing and moaning about something stupid...

Is there a list and a campaign to help us stop buying from these horrible people who hate us guys so much? Why do they make me feel so foolish because of my gender?.I never did anything to harm anyone yet they mock our lives and demean us like animals.

If you feel the advertisers should concentrate on the product when promoting it, should you not concentrate on the product, rather than the adverts, when considering consuming it?

Of course, because to imply that a black person could be considered anything less than perfect would be considered 'racist' and would attract complaints from the pinko liberal Guardian readers.

Note however it is only white men who are portrayed as duffers

Well said 'sadandangry'

We men are far above such petty irrelevances, do not take that sort of tosh seriously and have far more important tasks upon which to concentrate.

Such as reading 'TheWeeklyGripe' :)

men - stop feeling that your penises are being threatened by ads that show women being *gasp* working, intelligent people. are you offended by lynx adverts which show leggy beautiful women saying nothing but being shallow enough to chase an ugly male model round cos he wears lynx? it's just ADVERTISING! I work in it and it's shallow, ridiculous and hilarious. get over it. like the ladies said below - women have put up with, and are still putting up with, much, much worse. grow the hell up!
*sad and angry  29-Jul-2009 14:15

I know! It's amazing how women complaint their men never do any housework, or cooking. But who's up in the loft when something needs putting/fetching up there, or up a ladder unblocking something from the guttering? Is the woman sweeping up the yard, or cleaning the moss and gunk off the patio with a hosepipe? Maybe - but many men do housework, washing and cooking while the lazy b!tch of a wife sits watching the soap operas. This is probably why the adverts are so sexist against men - they are selling products to the women sitting on their fat backsides watching TV!

Women ONLY want equality when it suits them.

The advert for that oven cleaner with the line "So easy, a man could do it" really annoys and offends me! If it's so easy then the bıtch should do it herself and quit whining! Housewives always get men to do the jobs they can't handle because they are either too weak or don't have a clue. For example opening a jar or basic car maintenance.
