Does this steak pie look appetizing?

Do you think that this steak pie looks really appetizing?  Can you see the tender pieces of juicy steak in a rich gravy as advertised on the packaging?

Nope, I didn’t think it was that appetizing either and I certainly didn’t find many chunks of juicy steak in there.  It has to be said though, there was plenty gravy.  In fact I think the filling was MOSTLY gravy with a few gristly bits of meat and fat and goodness knows what else!

This particular steak pie wasn’t meant to be a deep fill one, but I had hoped for a bit more filling than I ended up with.  I reckon I could easily have nailed this thing to the outside wall and picked up some television channels it was so flat and devoid of any substance.

I was so looking forward to my dinner, a lovely meaty steak pie and masher potatoe - this is my all time favourite by the way and I can tell you that I was sorely disapointed on this particular occasion.  It really annoys me when I buy a product and once I open up the box it’s nothing like the product I saw in the photo.  Isn’t that false advertising and is there not some law against that?

Pictures of delicious mouth-watering food

I’ve noticed that this seems to happen more often with food bought from the big supermarkets.  Stuff from the freezer, ready meals, pies, pastries and deserts etc. all come in these fancy colourful boxes.  It’s all very well to advertise using pictures of delicious mouth-watering food, but you’ve got to follow that up with actually having a product in the box that resembles those images.

This was the steak pie on the box - see those lovely chunks of meat?

I guess if you want a really good meat filled steak pie, the best bet is probably to dig out a recipe, your rolling pin and go make one yourself!  Alternatively, there are still a few specialist pie and pastry shops that make their own on the premises.

I’ve had some really nice steak pies from the butcher shop where I grew up, but there again I’m naturally biased towards Scottish steak pies – they’re the best in my opinion!  Perhaps that’s why my expectations are so high.

Who ate all the steak pies?

Who makes the best pies
The observer food monthly have done their homework on pies in general. They've done a star rating system.  Is there such a thing as "pie fetish" anyway?

Scottish steak pie recipe
Here’s a recipe that makes pie making look easy.  Maybe it is!

Various pie recipes
You can do a lot with steak, there’s a few steak pie recipes here including a steak and kidney pie one.  Yuk, I think I'll pass on the kidney!

Ok guys so you seen and tasted supermarket pies, but have you tasted pies from www.therealpieco.co.uk, they fill their pies with real chunks of meat. I was very suprised, apparently they are very big in the west sussex area and have just expanded on to the internet. ANyway, I think these pies are the best Ive tasted (believe me I do like my pies) and real value for money too, check it out guys

Too true, the packaging has a lovely looking pie, golden pastry and huge meat chunks .... and then prepare yourself for bitter dissapointment! The photographer helps the big stores tell lies!! Know how they get away with it? The small type that says "serving suggestion"...ie they suggest you buy some proper steak and cook and add it to the pie...then pull off the grey cardboard pastry and slap on your own home made pastry!!!

I recently tried a small steak pie purchased by my wife when on her way back up the M6 from a service station ( possibly Tebay ) and was said to be made by an award winning maker. It was filled with a greyish gunge which was supposed to be steak, there was no steak in it at all, just this horrid stuff. The problem in this country is most folk put up with this, also the people who make things like this are not interested in food, only profit.

If you want a decent, fully filled pie, made on the premises from the very best ingredients with no artificial colourings or preservatives go and have a look at www.rarebreedsbutcher.com - you'll never buy another mass produced pie from the supermarket again! They are simply two different animals.

A Traditional Glasgow Steak Pie takes 11/2lbs Braising Beef, 3 Pork Sausuges and one small onion (all appropriately cut)and placed in an enamelled ashet covered with wate and cooked slowly in a 350oven until tender. Remove and add bisto to thicken. Allow to cool. Roll out Puff Pastry (Bought or homemade)1" wider than ashet, cut the overhang and wet and place around ashet rim then add pie funnel and cover with Puff pastry cutting hole on top of funnel.Use any left over pastry to decorate top. Return to oven and cook at 450 for 30 minutes. Serve with mashed potatoes and green peas (or whatever)the traditional pie crust rises at least one inch and should show layers when cut.

what you need for a traditional scottish steak pie is - some unhealthy beef fat, some bisto and mix into a stock, add to stewing steak and link sausages and cook slowly on the hob until reduced to a thick gravy. Stick bells puff pastry in the oven and serve on top of stewed meat. BRILLIANT AND AUTHENTIC.
