So its World Cup time again is it?  You wouldn’t have guessed, would you?  Every four years we have to endure this torture and put up with weeks of football on the telly and in the news.

Everywhere you turn there’s something going on to do with the world cup and I for one, am getting fed up with it.  It’s because there’s no way to escape from it – that’s the real problem!

During the peak of all this rubbish there are precious few pubs you can go into without having to suffer the commotion and yelling is dozens of drunken Englishmen hurl profanities at whatever player has earned their contempt during the game.  I don’t mind the fact that pubs have these dedicated sports evenings and show football matches, but does it have to be in nearly ALL of them?  There’s probably a reasonable portion of the population who either have no interest in the World Cup, or actually dislike it.  What about us?  We just want to enjoy a night out in the local without being drowned out every time someone scores a goal.

We’ve had the phenomenon of the St. Georges cross flags flying from cars for quite a while now. But tune into any radio station now and you’ll hear a rapid succession of World Cup songs, each one as pathetic as the last one.  Where do they get these from and why do they immediately make me want to turn off my radio?

Another thing that annoys me about big sporting events like this is the way the big companies try to cash in on it with all their consumer crap. They’re basically just leeching off the real football fanatics and the kids who are no doubt caught up in the excitement and will pester their parents for the latest gear.  It just makes me sick.

World cup fever, who needs it

Here’s an example, in the petrol station the other day when I spotted this stupid plastic coca-cola beaker.  It was selling for around £4, but who in their right mind would fork out that kind of cash for a stupid glass because it says something about the world cup on it?

Come on; let’s make the World Cup every ten years instead of every four.

I think the comments that England fan, June 25th England v Ecuador ( 1-1 ), Willy and Mark make are sort of proving our point. "England are definately going to be booted out in the next round".. We don't care. "They played like"... we don't care. "How pathetic...playing one striker up front on his own with no support"... we don't care. If we wanted to watch it we would. We don't that's the whole point of this gripe. We don't want to watch it, or get blow by blow accounts, or be told what should have been done, or how someone should have played.

Two points to make,
1) No other world cup event gets even close to this hype, making them infinitely preferrable. I love cricket and rugby, but this level of stupidity would put me off any sport. I just thank God that so few people in England actually care about rugby or cricket until those exceptionally rare moments when they might win something.

2) Why, for the past 6 months, has the lead on the news been about the health of a specific individual whom I can't imagine the majority of people letting into their house. That said, having been draged to watch the England's final match, I giggled heartily when he got sent off. Not that I dislike England, I just love seeing such a complete moron, in whom the hopes of a nation lie, being punished for acting like a child.

Thank god this farcical side show is over for England...maybe the country can get back to normal and forget that bungling Swede and his totally useless tactics! How pathetic...playing one striker up front on his own with no support! How could anyone have squandered the best players this country has to offer on such a flawed game plan? International football as far as England are concerned is pointless, the players who are paid by their clubs just couldn't care less about playing for their country..who can blame them with such poor leadership? Rubbish manager, rubbish FA and tactics designed to kill the game! Truly sad and truly pathetic.

You see, Willy - that's why I don't have any interest at all in football!
*Attila the Mum  03-Jul-2006 18:03

Well Engand are OUT. Lost on penalties AGAIN, and Beckham bows out of being captain.

Didn't they NOT do well. All the excuses you can think of,but the only one that's true,

Their ALL Bloody USELESS.

I think the World Cup is great! Particularly when there's an England match is on. We're able to go to a restaurant, the beach, a picnic, shopping... and no riff raff in sight! They're all sitting round the box, quaffing lager and swearing at the referee instead of annoying the life out of decent folk in public places.

Why are there a bunch of semi-illiterates on these pages who can't spell and think that grammer is some fraction of a 'foreign' kilogram? Ha ha. England isn't what it used to be - a highly regarded nation. Now it's the scum of Europe, and little wonder. People don't even have a clue how to dress properly, never mind speak or spell. Especially you football lot.

Well you were wrong on the score it was 1-0. But I do agree Englang are playing like a bunch of nancies. They have'nt played a DECENT team YET, and when they do, Engand are COMING HOME their coming home.

Oh, and my prediction for the next match England v Ecuador - it's straight forward. England have been lucky up until now but it will be a 1-1 draw. Ecuador will score in the final 10 minutes of the game. See if I am right!
*June 25th England v Ecuador ( 1-1 )  22-Jun-2006 15:05

England are definately going to be booted out in the next round. They don't stand a chance with the other teams like Argentina and Germany. Just my opinion.
