Is the UK a democracy or dictatorship?

Is democracy a system we really need anymore?  For a long time now, our parliamentary politicians have become steadily more useless, steadily more corrupt and greedy.  The wishes of the public are continually ignored and while we seethe in frustration, our politicians award themselves handsome pay increases, inflated pensions and peerages to ensure they are suckling at the political cash cow until the day they die.

The wishes of the public are continually ignored

We allegedly live in a democracy, yet in truth; a vast majority of the voters in this country either failed to vote, or voted for a party other than New Labour in the last general election.

We are supposed to have a secret vote, but this isn’t true, everyone has a unique poll number and that number is logged on a vast database so parties can target potential votes and assistance the next time round.

Parliament buildings, Westminster But look at the alternative:

Dictatorship: A dictator will, against the will of the people enact laws to suit their own ends.

Err! HELLO!!

A dictator will pass statute law that decreases the rights of the people with free speech, freedom of movement and freedom of thought.

Err! HELLO!!

A dictator will ensure that those close party members or financial backers will receive unearned rewards.

Err! HELLO!

The incumbent politicians of this and previous parliaments have continuously eroded the democratic principles to such an extent; we can scarcely recognise the country that our forefathers fought two world wars for.

If we’re going to be honest, lets just drop the pretence and get ourselves a dictator, any flavour will do, but at least we’ll know what we’ve got.

I tend to agree with you babe & that is why the Anglo Saxon British must always be ready to speak up, in order to keep the tattered garb called democracy in good nick. We do not run away to another country when things get a bit out of kilter. We do not seek asylum, in safer healthier climbs. We expose bent politicians, as others should in there own countries. We do not run away wingeing, seeking to beg another's money & use their welfare system. Our unique sense of fairness will always be there to darn the holes, left by the beggers & the likes of Thatcher, Fred the Shred & the inimitable Brown gold purveyor. My faith is with the British not the politicians..

Democracy is a great system in principle, but its most major defect is "politicians", those whom you elect to represent you. They are incapable of managing money and the spending of the nation's wealth. They will borrow money at any opportunity at each and everyone of our expense, if the spending of it glorifies their name. Witness Thatcher and the huge spending on the Falklands War. Look at the current of Greece, bankrupted by its politicians.

Politicians cannot be trusted with the Nation's future. They are only interested in the present and their ego. It the credit card philosophy of managing the country.

Spend, Spend, Spend till it goes bust

UK is a capitalist autocracy, with millions of serfs: Deltas serving the wealthy for a pittance.

Democracy is a theoretical, utopian concept. There is no such thing in reality.

Completely agree with the poster of this gripe - I have been saying for years that this country is a dicatorship and not a democracy. How else can you explain all the laws quiety passed that erode our rights while we are sleeping through the decisions? And why were we sleeping? Because nobody told us the laws were being passed. Leading by stealth and protecting their own as always....

If that's not bad enough, Human Rights laws tie the hands of those in power proposing sensible measures for society.

Frank H, I forgot to congratulate you on your post. I agree with every word you have said and the 2 quotations you included are particularly poignant.

It is increasingly difficult to see the difference between the UK and so-called "tin pot" regimes, like in Zimbabwe. It is a government of mainly public school boys who are almost completely disconnected from the rest of the population, sworn to maintain a system that makes the rich richer and promotes a low-wage economy. There is little point in bothering to go out to vote - whatever government of whatever party gets into power, they promptly ignore the electorate, back-track on their electoral promises, and pursue policies that are essentially in favour of the rich and privileged, including the foul and disgusting bankers. I took part in my first protest march last weekend, and now that I've 'broken the ice', I'll probably take part in more. After all, protesting via the election box is pointless. Democracy in the UK is essentially 'broken', and the system only leads to increasing feelings of disenchantment and disempowerment.

The people have the power. Millions of people need to realise what's going on and rise up against them. They have few compared to us.

The majority of dictatorships are masked by a pseudo-democratic structure - otherwise known as a Banana Republic - which in essence is what Britain now is. To be part of the political class in Britain, one now has to have enough money to funded private education, whereas once upon a time grammar schools allowed intelligent working class children to move up the ranks, thus helping to maintain social mobility.

This all goes to show that too much faith is now placed in 'democracy', which is merely a system of government, and therefore is not (as is now proven) a guarantor of freedom. Alas, we live in socialist times. For anyone interested, former Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky is one worth google-ing for more information about current state of British and EU politics. Here are two quotes on liberty particularly pertinent to our times:

James Madison: "There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."

Thomas Jefferson: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

It is clearly a dictatorship. Dictators are famous for showing interest in the filthy rich and taking from the as much as possible away from the ordinary people - to make the rich richer!

So you think your living in a democracy do you, yes we are come time to elect a new government, but once elected you get about six hundred mostly rich dictateing to about 60 million people how we should live in this country, and all we do is except like lambs to the slaughter, pay high taxes,go to war,let the government waste money, you name it we do it. I thought the majority ruled, how naive of me.

mardi gras the candyman can - 6-Oct-10 21:35

People such as the griper above, who incidentally has a most suitable christian name on this occasion, conveniently forget certain things whilst moaning about democracy, or lack of.

Yes, our rights freedoms are slowly eroding away. Yes, MPs are becoming more and more aloof from those they are elected to serve. And so on and so on...

Where would you post your online gripe if we had a dictator?

Not here you wouldn't, because you wouldn't have access to sites such as these.

Fancy taking to the streets instead?

Forget it, unless you fancy a stay in a hospital or an enforced rest at home while you recover from the injuries you sustained.

Do you get the picture yet?

I don’t know much about British parties, but the Democrats and the Republicans in the USA have degenerated into sports teams. They’re constantly competing against each other and have their own loyal gangs of hooligans, but there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two. At least they were honest in the USSR when it existed, wherein there was only one Communist Party.

Why are we as the population so ignored by the people we put in charge? we have a general election once in a while and we vote as to the policies each of the parties put forward at the time.Once in power most of the policies are forgotten as we are not asked about what we the public think again until the next election, issues we all feel very strongly about are totally ignored ,and we very rarely have any referendums-I can only remember one in my long lifetime, other countries have far more say in what happens in their lives, our government as it is run at present is in my opinion a total waste of time,we should have far more say in what is after all our country too.
