Fruit and veg from the supermarket doesn't last

Why does fruit and veg from my local Supermarket not last?  My mom used to buy big bags of potatoes and veg, which would last for ages.  Now, I buy carrots and potatoes etc at the weekend, and by Thursday they are only fit for compost.

Why do I spend £2.99 on a punnet of tangerines only to get home and discover that one of them is ALREADY mouldy and has tainted one of the others?

I pay all this money for fruit and veg, handing over my hard earned cash to these large supermarket chains for stuff to basically throw in the composter!  Why does their fruit and vegetables not last any longer than a few days?

Also, why during the english asparagus season, is my local supermarket still importing an inferior asparagus from Peru?  What's the point of me watching my carbon footprint if Sainsbury's aren't bothering to do their bit for the planet?
