Is it just me, or are fruit and vegetables from the supermarkets and shops getting a bit expensive these days? You're 5 a day fruit and vegetables grow quite happily in the muck and quite often all the year round, so why do they charge such rip-off prices? Vegetables aren't a luxury, or at least the common ones aren't. You know - carrots, turnip, potatoes, swede, leeks, cauliflower, cabbage, onions. The staple food of working class Britain as far back as anyone can remember. When did someone suddenly decide to hike up the prices?
You can grow fruit and vegetables in your own garden for next to nothing and I'm definitely going to go down this route next year and set up my own veg patch at the back of the garden. I just can't afford to buy my produce from the shops anymore. The transportation costs are probably part of the problem... as usual. So why don't they source their fresh fruit and vegetables locally instead?
To give you an example of the cost, I had to pay over £1 for a couple of leeks not long ago - that's 50p a leek! Why are they so dear? Potatoes aren't bad, you can get a 5KG bag of spuds from the farmer most of the year for about a £5, although the quality does vary from place to place. Other common vegetables such as Peppers and Courgettes (zucchinis to you Americans!) can be particularly expensive. 99p for 3 not exactly large peppers isn't that great value for money in my opinion. However, there's light at the end of the tunnel there. If you keep an eye on places like Aldi they do special offers and you can sometimes get your peppers for 49p. They were doing tomatoes recently for 25p a pack - absolute bargain!
So come on greengrocers and supermarkets, we need our 5 a day and meat is just too darned expensive, so cut us some slack and get the price of vegetables down to a reasonable level.
