Credit card companies, fed up being hounded

I've just come back from holiday and realised that my credit card payment is overdue.  OK, this is my fault and I know that.  Credit card companies aren't a charity and they expect people to make their payments on time.  However, while I've been away the credit card company in question has called my home 6 times, my mobile has 5 missed calls on it and I've been sent 2 messages this morning.

I rang the credit card company, elected to pay by debit card, entered all my details.  I then went through all the security details, entered all the card details and then just as I thought I was coming to the end and would soon be able to pay, they whisked me off to 'an adviser'.  I was then faced with a lady who unfortunately spoke heavily accented English and we had to go through the whole rigmarole again!  All the while using up the credit on my mobile phone.

Why couldn't they just let me pay off my credit card bill?  I'd got that far, I only needed to enter the emount and it would have all been finished.  But instead I had to spend a further five minutes going through all the reasons I was late with my payment, repeating all the security questions and having to keep asking 'Excuse me, could you repeat that?'

Yes, before I get flamed - it is all my fault - but I was really trying my best just to pay my credit card.  I now feel exhausted just thinking about it!
