Quiet coaches on trains. Does the great British public no longer understand the oncept of "quiet"? Does the train company have a duty of care to enforce "quiet" on trains where they hold out avilability of specially designated quiet coaches? Why are they called 'quiet coaches' when they are clearly anything but quiet!

I ask because I have just spent a hellish weekend travelling on a lengthy journey on pre booked seats in supposed "quiet" compartments. We had people chatting - constantly. We had families with rowdy children. We had guys travelling back to the rigs talking and drinking at length. We had beer swilling, swearing, vulgar crude banter et al. What we didn't have - at any point - was "quiet".

Surely, if you don't want to be quiet, you book/sit elsewhere on the train? And surely, those of us who DO want quiet have a right to expect the train compny to make sure we get it when they have offered us a specially selected quiet coach just for that prupose.

Even my wonderful litle ear-plugs could not block out the racket we had to endure. And yes, I had to sit beside somebody with that joyful travel addition, the tinny, non-silent i-pod!
