Transport and Travel

"A selection of gripes about travel and transportation.  The trains never on time, tickets too expensive and passengers fed up with overcrowded trains.  Getting to work by car, traffic congestion and paying way over the odds for your petrol and diesel.  Then of course there's the poor bus service you have to put up with when you ditch the car for the bus, it's enough to make you stay at home!

Recent gripes in this section

Why I will no longer fly with Ryanair
I fly quite frequently due to relocating from Bristol to Glasgow. In the past I've also defended Ryanair as people complain about card fees, baggage costs and toilet charges. I stood by them saying that despite all these fees...

The dangerous, silly things that cyclists do
I have seen cyclists do dangerous and silly things. Some don't use lights when cycling in the dark, some cycle on the road when there is a perfectly good cycle path and I've lost count of the number I've seen go through red traffic lights.

Why bother with an insurance claim on your car?
My gripe is with car insurance claims. Having had continual cover for 35 years with a clean licence my insurance has gone up so much that I will have to take my disabled son on a bus and will not be able to use my car any longer.
10-Oct-11 17:12

Impatient bus drivers that move off before I'm seated
Travelling by bus has its ups and downs but a new annoyance has emerged. Reckless bus drivers take your money and then race off, leaving you to stagger up the aisle with your bags, clinging on to the pole as the bus lurches around.
26-Sep-11 17:22

Ryanair's extra charges are a disgrace
We recently booked a trip to Spain, and flew Ryanair. Even though I am a seasoned flyer and know most of the cons, it seems as if you are constantly on a learning curve with respect to the latest Ryanair con.
15-Aug-11 18:02

I've had enough of screaming children on planes
Going on a holiday is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. However, it does not feel that way when you are going to the airport and at the check in desk there are screaming children running about when you are trying check in.
28-Jul-11 19:29

Litter left lying around on the floor of a bus
How I just hate it, when I get on a bus and scramble to find a seat before the driver sets off and I end up tripping over a bottle. People just dump them on the floor as they can't be bothered to take them with them.
7-Jul-11 18:05

You shouldn't have to pay to go to the toilet
A person needs to evacuate their bowels or urinate at least once a day, so I find it quite despicable when someone or some company tries to turn a quick profit whilst servicing this most basic human need.
2-May-11 14:37

Slobs with feet up on a seat on a train or bus
People who put their dirty feet up on train and bus seats. How would they like to sit on dog poo and chewing gum from someone else's shoes? Do they have absolutely no consideration for the next person who is going to sit there?
31-Mar-11 16:40

Mobile phone use on buses should be banned
I don't go on buses all that often, which is a good thing because I don't enjoy the experience at the best of times. Having to listen to someone talking loudly on a mobile phone for the best part of an hour has really put me off though!
24-Feb-11 19:55

Dazzled by rear fog lights and brake lights
There's nothing worse than driving behind a car that has fog lights on or sitting at traffic lights when the driver in front has their foot on the brake. Please have some consideration and avoid dazzling other drivers.
14-Feb-11 17:22

My holiday in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote
This is my third visit to the Canarian island, the last one being around six or seven years ago and whilst I didn't expect things to be the same, I guess my expectations were probably a little bit high.
6-Sep-10 12:46

Why don't rival bus companies work together?
On the face of it that might sound like a stupid question but as a passenger who's waited at a bus stop for the best part of forty five minutes, I can tell you I'm not amused at the level of service.
13-Aug-10 19:04

Why do people go abroad every year?
What is this irrisistible compulsion that some British people have to jet off on a foreign holiday every year, particularly around now when there's an occasional rain shower or two? What's wrong with having a holiday in the UK?
17-Jun-10 15:25

Cyclists and car drivers, a deadly mix
I cycle to work each day and it's approximately a six mile round trip. During my journey I have to make use of a filter lane to turn right and frequently find myself amazed at the sheer selfishness displayed by many car drivers.
3-May-10 17:13

Not enough space for luggage on trains
You know the feeling, you've made it to the station, paid for the exorbitantly-priced ticket and struggled onto the train.  But... have you ever wondered where on earth you can put your luggage?
17-Apr-10 13:28

Car driver stereotypes and the driving test
Nissan Micra owners have difficulty attaining more than 30 mph. White van man continues his callous disregard and destruction unabated and BMW owners continue to look down at others and feel generally superior.
6-Apr-10 12:41

Pedestrians - walk on which side of the road?
How many times do you come across this? You are driving along the road and there is a person or even a group of people walking down the side of the road with their backs to the traffic flow.
24-Feb-10 19:04

Get out of the way of that ambulance!
What gets me is when you are driving along in your car, and you hear an ambulance siren behind you (along with seeing the blue flashing lights), all of a sudden all the cars around you just pull over.
10-Feb-10 18:29

Snow and ice brings out the worst drivers
Most of the country has had a large amount of snow over the past couple of weeks and driving conditions have been poor at best, so why is it that some people are just so bad at adapting their driving to the conditions?
7-Jan-10 20:15

Cycling on the footpath dangerous to pedestrians
I can sympathise with cyclists when they say that they feel unsafe and threatened on our roads due to the amount of traffic and of course through the actions of selfish drivers. What about the danger to pedestrians though?
29-Nov-09 18:17

Highway Code - drivers don't bother to indicate
Who bothers with the Highway Code these days? It seems to be standard practice nowadays for motorists not to bother to indicate when changing lanes on a motorway, and not to indicate at a junction or at a roundabout.
30-Sep-09 13:07

Mini with gearbox problems from car supermarket
On the drive home the gearbox was making a grinding noise so we phoned them and they took it back to look at a couple of weeks later. We were then told they had fitted a new clutch and reconditioned gearbox.
2-Sep-09 14:53

Car insurance for young drivers
I am 20 and male with a 10 month old driving license. Unfortunately this puts me in the same category as a raging drunk drug addict who crashes every 5 seconds when it comes to car insurance premiums.
20-Aug-09 09:55

Ryanair, fed up with hidden costs and charges
Ryanair are fast developing a reputation for being an unscrupulously crafty set of rip off merchants, unfortunately from bitter personal experience I have to admit I have fallen foul of these shysters.
13-Jul-09 05:31

Ryanair check-in surcharges a disgrace
Flying with Ryanair might not be as cheap as you think. They have now stipulated that boarding passes have to be printed at home and woe betitde the forgetful traveler who forgets to do this. Stung with yet another surcharge.
2-Jul-09 12:38

Roundabouts and dithering car drivers
Drivers that dither and do not know how to react on roundabouts. On my way to and from work each day I encounter lots of roundabouts and see some quite spectacular and often scary driving.
11-Apr-09 12:42

Bad road design creates dangerous parking
I realise the intention of the road layout is to slow down vehicles, but this borders on the ridiculous. Now our council are taking 'enforcement measures' because of the dangerous parking caused by them in the first place!
9-Mar-09 14:12

VW Golf electrics a complete nightmare
Having electrical problems with your VW Golf? In the end I sold parts from my car to try to raise the money I had lost in repair charges. I had to be without a car for some time.
5-Mar-09 18:42

Useless toilets on trains - doors don't lock properly
These toilets with sliding doors on trains are useless. Half the time, people forget the 'lock' button and then are surprised when the door opens agonisingly slowly and you are in full view of the general public - not very dignified!
18-Feb-09 14:46

Pedestrian and zebra crossings ignored by drivers
Pedestrian crossings and zebra crossings seem to have lost their meaning as far as drivers are concerned these days. I have recently appalled by the lack of attention to the highway code by drivers out there on our roads.
16-Jan-09 15:13

Flight from Greece delayed 14 hours
On a recent holiday to Greece, our flight home was delayed for 14 hours.  The tour operator was unable to provide any useful information but said not to stray too far away as they felt sure we would be boarding soon.
22-Dec-08 16:43

Another fine example of how the public are being ripped off wherever possible. Birmingham airport rapid drop off apparently charge you £1 even though you are quite literally driving through and dropping someone off.
7-Dec-08 16:06

Alcohol on public transport should be banned
My husband and I had to endure a train journey recently spoiled by some young men getting drunk and being very loud and intimidating. Can anyone please tell me what the situation is regarding public transport and alcohol?
3-Nov-08 20:24

London Underground overcrowding
I'm fed up with London underground and all of the miserable, angry people who are forced to crowd together, jostling for elbow room, trying not to taste the shampoo residue from the hair of the person you're sqaushed up against.
27-Oct-08 13:59

Disneyland Paris holiday complaint
I recently paid for, and went on, a holiday to Disneyland, Paris. I took my fiancée for her 21st birthday. Whilst there we had some abysmal service and so when I got back I wrote this VERY long letter of complaint.
29-Aug-08 14:24

Cancelling my car insurance - a cancellation fee
After selling my car, recently, I called my insurance provider to cancel the policy. I had a very lengthy discussion with the customer service advisor about whether I should suspend the policy and continue to pay it.
22-Aug-08 16:03

Cyclists, accidents and the law
I've lost count of the number of near misses I've had with selfish cyclists over the years. I'm not pointing the finger at all cyclists because I am aware that the vast majority of them are law abiding and considerate.
9-Jul-08 18:39

There are alternatives to petrol and diesel
There is potentially a very bright future out there for personal transport that doesn't rely on petrol, diesel or chip fat to power the engine of your car. So where is it and why are we not using it then?
9-Jun-08 12:10

Motorway queues and 'rubbernecking'
Having had another bad week on the M25 I decided I had to get this off my chest. Why do people have to rubberneck whenever there's an incident on the road? It just causes a traffic jam and then a delay for everyone.
13-May-08 12:21

Left on the platform at New Street train station
My hellish train journey. I had been to my native Black Country hometown of Tipton for an old schoolmate’s 50th birthday party and had caught the 08.59 train from Tipton to Birmingham New Street Station.
12-May-08 17:40

Fuel duty is way too high
Everybody seems to be moaning about the prices of petrol these days and why not? Especially as Shell and BP have just announced profits of over 7 billion pounds between them in the first three months of the year.
29-Apr-08 17:45

Airline seats are too cramped
Having just endured a sleepless night to ensure prompt arrival at an airport for a very early flight, I was allocated a seat on a flight in front of the toilets. To top it all, the most inconsiderate person I have met was sat in front of me.
12-Apr-08 18:08

Incompetent garage couldn't fix my car
Around November/December time last year my car heater stopped working and as my father was a mechanic, I asked him to have a quick look to see if he could see what was wrong.
8-Apr-08 13:02

Information boards and traffic officers
Any information we receive on the road depends on the person in the control room. To make a route change we need information a junction or two before the incident and we need to know what has happened.
29-Jan-08 20:19

Chaos at yellow box junctions
Why do yellow box junctions attract the most clueless drivers in the country? The nip through the traffic lights with no thought for anyone and end up stranded there blocking the path of everyone else!
25-Jan-08 19:11

Tailgating and flashing headlights
A pet hate of mine would be people who tailgate and flash their headlights to try and get you to move over. Who do they think they are? It's certainly not going to achieve the desired effect and more likely to make me take my time.
11-Jan-08 20:02

Ryanair baggage allowance rip off
The Ryanair baggage allowance is quite simply ridiculous. Many people are using low-cost airlines these days because they are supposedly a cheap way to fly, but the hidden costs associated with excess baggage can come as a shock.
29-Dec-07 23:50

Speeding fine by text message
I have been driving for six years and in all that time I have had a clean license, but now have received af fine for £258 for an offence I'm not even sure I committed. Even worse, I got sent a text message!
6-Dec-07 22:38

Park and Ride bus drivers are spiteful
There are many Park and Ride facilities around the country and they are very useful except for one thing – from my experience, Park and Ride bus drivers are the most spiteful in the country compared with other bus drivers.
30-Nov-07 23:39

Dangerous motorcyclists risk lives
I saw one of the most dangerous manoeuvres by a motorcyclist I have ever seen in my life whilst driving home along the M40 one Sunday evening. Taking stupid risks isn't cool and does nothing for the image of bikers.
19-Nov-07 23:25

New cars need to be more efficient
With the recent rise of gas prices, now at $3.23 per gallon in the Sacramento area, I decided to look into new cars.. I was shocked to say the least that regardless of transmissions, they could do better than 35 MPG!
31-Oct-07 23:18

Airline ignored my complaints
Has anyone used Globespan Airlines? I have recently used their so called 'Award Winning' service to travel to Canada and was less than happy with several aspects of their service.
29-Oct-07 23:58

Taxi drivers take liberties
Taxi drivers are quite useful sometimes because they get you to and from the pub and are a lot better than standing around in the rain waiting for a bus. However, in my opinion some of them tend to take liberties.
24-Oct-07 20:21

People expect cyclists to bend over backwards
I cycle around town and country for recreation and commuting.  It is faster, more reliable and/or less faff than the alternatives, but I am tired of getting a bad rap from both car drivers and pedestrians.
19-Oct-07 18:04

Idiots who drive on your side of the road
They might be idly cutting a corner to save on effort and tyre wear, and think you ought to brake hard or swerve into a neighbour's front garden to let them do so. worst of all, they might be driving straight at you.
16-Oct-07 21:00

Foreign lorry driver hit our car
Lorry drivers are a liability at the best of times, but the foreign ones drive like maniacs! The driver that hit our car was from Poland and the British police cannot force the Polish authorities to trace this individual.
5-Oct-07 14:22

Ford Focus starting problems, car just won't start
I bought a Ford Focus 1.8TDCi brand new in April 2003 it has done 22,000 miles with a full Ford service history. However, on the 14th of May 2007 the car began to have cold starting problems.
6-Sep-07 11:48

People have lost the ability to drive
Every time I go onto the roads of this country I encounter drivers that either do not understand the rules of the road or do not care about them. There are a few areas in which poor drivers really excel.
7-Aug-07 12:36

No road tax on foreign cars in the UK
Living in the West Midlands I am sick to the teeth of the sheer amount of foreign vehicles used on UK roads with no road tax. In the street where I live there is a foreign vehicle with no road tax disc.
9-Jul-07 15:41

Renault Laguna with endless problems
I bought a Renault Laguna 1.9 DCI from a garage in Glasgow and during the very first week I had the car, I noticed that a yellow warning light began showing on the dash. Soon things got a lot worse.
3-Jul-07 17:53

Fee charged for cancelling my car insurance policy
When taking out a motor insurance policy, my advice is read the small print very carefully, particularly the section that mentions cancellation rates. Think carefully when you decide to cancel.
30-Jun-07 20:01

I have the same old loss of power problem reported by others.  It has recently been loosing power whenever it gets up to 70 mph in 4th or 5th gear, usually when overtaking and volkswagen seem to be unable fix this problem.
22-Jun-07 13:57

Old drivers create chaos on the roads
Personally, I think all drivers over the age of 60 should to re-take a test at least every five years, perhaps at a subsidized rate. My grandad who is 80 is not fit to drive a car both medically and mentally, yet he still insists on driving.
5-Jun-07 15:45

First Great Western train service
My experience recently went like this. I had a job interview in London, to which I needed to travel from Devon. I checked train times, and found that the earliest train arrival was 08:49 into London Paddington.
14-May-07 21:35

Advanced driving not age limits
I am fed up listening to the typically narrow minded individuals that think all the problems on the road will be solved with limiting driving age groups. This method DOES NOT work.
1-May-07 21:54

We buy large vehicles for reasons of safety
Safety is the main reason for buying a large vehicle, especially after seeing the kind of damage done when a small car is involved with an accident with a lorry. You've got more chance of coming out alive in a 4x4.
16-Apr-07 12:25

Bus service in the UK is terrible
The Government tells us we should leave our cars at home and use public transport more. Well my experience so far in commuting to work by bus hasn't been a pleasant one due to awkward routes and timetables.
13-Apr-07 13:28

Breakdown recovery - listen to the man at the front!
This is not really a gripe, but a story about the morons with twenty letters after their name whose basic intelligence is on par with ameba's IQ and they apparently know better than the man at the front!
13-Mar-07 18:51

Lorry driver versus car driver at rush hour
Well maybe road pricing could work, but not for the lorry. This situation is getting bad now and we should realise that if the lorry stops running, we will all very quickly grind to a halt too!
1-Mar-07 17:01

Garage had my car for five months
To date this rip-off garage has had my Renault Laguna five months and I am currently suing them. Recently they offered to tear up their invoice so long as I don’t talk about the hell that they have put me through.
28-Feb-07 12:38

Insurance claim resulted in county court case
I feel that my husband has recently been very unfairly treated by our van insurance company. He had an accident a couple of years ago and the company settled the insurance claim for the van almost straight away.
21-Feb-07 14:20

Traffic signs left behind
Traffic signs for road works that just get casually left behind really get up my nose. What’s the point in leaving them up there once the work on the road has been completed Why can they not remove them?
17-Jan-07 23:58

Child car seat law ignored
Now that the child car seat law has been in action for a short time, how many parents have bought the right car seat for their children and enforced their use? How many parents think fags are more important than safe restraints?
11-Jan-07 16:03

We've got idiot drivers on the road these days
There are many different types of road users out there on our roads, both good and bad. None of us are perfect, but I have noticed that there are categories of drivers that make life miserable for the rest of us.
22-Nov-06 23:23

Fed up with my unreliable VW Golf
After owning old bangers most of my life, I splashed out on a lovely VW Golf after test driving a few other cars. Unfortunately this car has been extremely unreliable and has tested my faith in VW and their superior engineering.
2-Nov-06 19:48

Overcrowding on South West Trains
I commute daily to the City of London from Surrey. I use South West Trains to get into Waterloo everyday and I have to say their service is appalling. My gripe isn’t about delayed or cancelled trains, it's about the serious overcrowding.
28-Oct-06 15:22

Baggage carousel madness at the airport
If there’s one thing I really detest then it would be those baggage carousels at airports. I cannot believe the lack of intelligence that the travelling tourist displays when they are placed in front of the baggage belt.
23-Oct-06 23:59

Fed up with Lorries causing mayhem
Lorry drivers can be a real nuisance on the road. I hate them for the size of their machines and the reckless way in which they thunder through my village causing children and animals to flee.
25-Sep-06 16:31

Impatient people on a plane
What is it with air travel and why are people so impatient when it is time to disembark? They don't seem to be able to sit still and wait their turn and being patient is an alien concept to them.
13-Sep-06 19:11

Dangerous things people do when driving
The worst ever example of dangerous driving observed recently was a motorist going past me at 90 plus mph on a motorway, whilst reading a novel that was propped up on the steering wheel!
23-Aug-06 08:55

Parking on the pavement - it's plain selfish!
People who are guilty of parking on the pavements! This drives me totally insane. Why do these idiots think that the safety of their precious cars is more important than people’s right to walk safely?
10-Aug-06 09:52

C11 bus service in London, very poor
One thing that really bugs me regarding transport in London is the service of the C11 bus that goes through west Hampstead, Swiss Cottage and Brent Cross. It's a poor service that is never on time.
1-Aug-06 15:47

Lorry drivers are rude and selfish
Lorry drivers, how rude and selfish can you be? When another very slightly faster lorry is overtaking you, why do you have to stay side by side at your cruising speed instead of just throttling back a bit?
14-Jul-06 12:04

Speed humps and mini roundabouts
These hunps have severely damaged my car. They were presumably introduced to reduce speeds on side streets to lower than 30 mph. As for mini roundabouts, these things are stupid and dangerous.
13-Jul-06 13:09

Front fog lights irritate other drivers
Why do people drive around with these front fog lights on when there is absolutely no need for them? I'm fed up being blinded by irresponsible people that think they look cool with them on.
14-Jun-06 18:05

Car drivers forget Highway Code
On a narrow road you've got a cyclist coming up a hill and a car coming down a hill. Which of the two vehicles should give way? It's just a shame some car drivers don't know the answer!
13-Jun-06 17:47

Rip off MOT and servicing
Due to new business commitments I was forced to use a different garage to the one I would normally use in Rochdale. At least Dick Turpin work a mask before he robbed you!
11-Jun-06 21:33

Slow police cars on the motorway holding traffic up
If find this so frustrating. Why do police cars drive so slowly on the motorway and hold all the traffic up? What on earth are they doing, shouldn't they be catching criminals somewhere?
26-May-06 11:44

Free safety check at a garage costs a grand
I took my car to the main Volkswagen dealer in Camberly for a so called 'free safety check' and I ended up paying nearly £1000 for repairs that were unnecessry. Needless to say I will not be going back to Martins again!
8-May-06 11:23

Village road used as a rat run by traffic - so what?
So your village has become a rat run for commuters trying to avoid the congestion on the motorway? What would you have us do, sit in the jams like good little clones and not have the temerity to consider an alternative route?
27-Apr-06 11:54

Railway station gripe: rubbish bins, announcements
Railway stations, what you possibly have to gripe about with them? For me the main source of irritation is the way the announcements are always timed to coincide with a passing train.
21-Apr-06 16:21

National Rail Enquiries helpline and journey planner
I called National Rail Enquiries to check there were no problems as I was going up to London to see a concert.. I knew the route I was taking, so why on earth did the operator insist that I take a detour?
4-Apr-06 11:18

More cameras won't stop drivers speeding
The problem with speed cameras is that they are not able to differentiate between a dangerous driver and someone using speed when it is safe to do so. Speed cameras are not the answer.
30-Mar-06 12:57

Bad driving habits and lane discipline, tailgating etc.
There are number of things that other drivers do that I find extremely irritating.  Bad Tailgating, poor lane discipline, not indicating and undertaking are just a few of the bad habits that I see frequently and find very annoying.
24-Mar-06 15:09

Roundabouts built too high causing poor visibility
Roundabouts are a great idea and as anyone who has traveled on the A421 would know, they help to keep the traffic moving. However, what about the safety issues when they are built too high?
17-Feb-06 15:40

181 bus service, possibly the worst in London
We are all supposed to try and do our bit for the environment by switching from the car to the bus, but in some cases the bus service makes that choice seem pretty unappealing.
15-Feb-06 16:41

Motorcycles and the crash helmet law in the UK
I have held a motorcycle licence for over twelve years and I’m just curious to understand something that doesn’t really make sense to me.  It’s regarding the law on vehicle tax, insurance and crash helmets.

12-Dec-05 17:12

Fog lights should only be used when it's foggy
Fog lights on cars are there to be used when weather conditions deteriorate and visibility is reduced to such an extent that regular taillights are no longer effective. Fog lights are to be used in these conditions alone.
23-Nov-05 17:54

Car parked across two bays, how selfish is that?
Cars parked across two bays. I still can’t understand why some people have to park in such a selfish manner, parking in disabled spaces and sprawled across the painted lines.
14-Oct-05 14:30

Stupid bad and dangerous driving on a narrow road

3-Oct-05 18:15

Cyclists riding on pavements a danger to pedestrians

27-Sep-05 20:49

Learner drivers on busy roads during rush hour
I know this is going to sound a bit nasty, because I guess we all had to learn to drive at some time or other, but why do driving instructors take their students out on the road at stupid times and on very busy stretches of road?
13-Sep-05 14:38

Car mechanics and used car dealerships

1-Sep-05 10:54

Petrol prices and fuel tax too high in the UK
The price of petrol is now at silly levels now in the UK. Oil giant BP has recently unveiled record first-half profits at the same time. Are they rubbing our face in it?
10-Aug-05 15:06

Car problems caused by bad service from a garage
Two weeks ago, I took my car to a local garage for a full service and an MOT. Thanks to their incompetence, my car is now off the road and I am seriously out of pocket.
8-Aug-05 17:13

26-Jul-05 17:33

Car damage caused by potholes
The state of our roads is just disgusting and I for one am well and truly fed up paying a road tax and not seeing repairs undertaken in a timely fashion. Where do you begin if you want to report problems with potholes?
22-Jun-05 01:03
