Old people shown little respect by youngsters

Parents don't teach respect
I am 71 now and I'd swear it was only yesterday that I was young, and I had the utmost respect for those older than myself. How very quickly we age....

As an elderly pensioner, I have been aware for the past few years that here in the UK, younger people appear to have little respect for the old folks. I can only assume that their parents have failed to instill such respect in them.

| 16-8-2010 | I don't mean to be offensive or anything, but if you OAPs showed us some respect,we might show some respect for you as well. | DSG |
| 16-8-2010 | So...we teenagers are supposed to respect the very OAPs who judge us by the way we look? | DSG |
| 10-7-2010 | Those who show no respect for the elderly.there gonna get old someday too and the next generation will disrespect them too.I feel for you Jenniemint, I have 2 elderly parents and want people to show them respect, I am middle aged and someday I am gonna get old, | show elderly respect, it pays off. |
| 12-6-2010 | Yes, all people of all colour and age should be respected. But the point of this article is Old People. In general, we as a nation, do not respect old people. We pack them away in their Elderly Care homes like sending children off to Boarding school where we would hardly see them.
I blame our society. Every bit of recreation land is grabbed and offices and gated properties are built (especially in Surrey). Community spirit? It is tailor-made depending where you live. Road planning and buildings are created to slice through communities and not near the wealthier areas. Communities all over UK are divided by this over development in certain areas.

| 10-5-2010 | People of ANY age need respect and politeness. I'm young, so I often get given dirty looks while waiting alone at the bus stop, all from the elderly. I have had an old yet physically able man refuse to get out of my way even though I was carrying a weeks worth of grocery shopping down a narrow street. I've also had an able-bodied elderly woman demand I give up the disabled seat on the bus, even though there were other seats available, and at the time, I had a leg brace on and was barely able to move.
People of any age are capable of being ageist, and people of any age are capable of being rude and unfair. Let's not turn this into a big 'I've got it worse' contest. | Liz |
| 27-4-2010 | Chris, you are a nasty piece of work. They didn't touch you deliberately you great oaf! They could see clearly. They were OLD. You get it? | ChrisIsASh*t |

Your tale of the encounter in a supermarket sounded to me as though you showed commendable restraint when dealing with a couple of aggressive elderly yobbos.
A pair of petulant pensioners who definitely did not deserve respect in spite of their age. | Congo |
| 27-4-2010 | Jeanniemint, it makes me sick to my stomach at the lack of respect many people have for the elderly. I know exactly how you feel. | Wish It Were Different |
| 26-4-2010 | older people should be respected because we the young people will be old | lupe |
| 16-4-2010 | The trouble is that a lot of old folk only see younger people as the stereotype nasty hoody mugger types or that young people are out to get them. Older people are vulnerable and a friendly attitude goes a long way to gaining younger friends and willing help in tough times. Respect works both ways. Unfortunately dumping your older relatives into a home is due to our modern lifestyles, we only have small families where everyone works, so we dont have time to look after old folk, other cultures have large families where one or more of the female members do not work, so they have the time to look after their old folk. Where would you rather have Granny, alone at home waiting for the first person to finish work or at a modern retirement establishment, where human interaction and activities are in abundance, I know where i'd rather be. | Rider of the Apocalypse |
| 15-4-2010 | I think this is more about the person than age of. I've been knocked into by young and old and have apologised, been apologised too; as well as been spoken to offensively by old and young.
I'd like to point out this doesn't happen often.
I agree that the World seems angry, and is getting more aggressive as the years pass but I don't think its just our youth. | emma |
