Police weren't interested
The fact of the matter is the police made absolutely no effort at all and this is what is shocking. If this had been Germany, France or even Kenya, this would at least have been investigated

Last year my father was involved in a hit and run incident and although he recovered, we were astonished at the police's reaction which was to explain they had more important things to do and his case was not investigated.

| 10-7-2010 | It's the early hours of the morning and I've just tuned into Sky News to find that it's still completely dominated by the story of Raoul Moat. Now before anyone flames me for this, let me just say that this guy has committed some terrible, cowardly crimes and my heart goes out to the families of those concerned. The thing is, the news has been dominated by this story alone for about the last week and we've heard of practically nothing else. It's almost as if nothing else is happening in the world, or at least in this country. Even the World Cup's a distant memory.
As I said, no disrespect to the small number of people directly affected by all this and I'm sure the people of Rothbury are living on the edge. But let's get this in perspective. It's one guy. He's taken the lives of a small number of people and yet half the police in the country and almost unlimited resources have been expended in the attempt to capture him. What gives? People have (and regularly do) commit much worse crimes without all the fanfare and media attention. Are we just loosing our perspective here, or are the police really just not that busy at the moment? Kids kept home from school, people staying indoors. It's just crazy.
Well thankfully the blokes gone and done himself in and maybe things can get back to normal. It's just weird though that so much attention has gone into this case when I think that in the whole scheme of things its just not that important. Chances are the guy (who's clearly a nut job) would have cooled down and come in eventually.

I rang them a couple of weeks ago about gangs of feral youth hanging around outside my local off licence drinking underage and abusing people using the shop and passing by. Numerous calls were ignored so I used the public phone box, rang 999, put on a fake Asian accent and told the operator I was being called rude names because of my race outside the said off licence. Within minutes two police cars and a cop van appeared and the youths quickly moved on. I know white people can't use the race card much but it does have its uses. | A. Verage |

Where are they all, what are they up to?

I don't doubt that the events took place or that no action is being taken but I think there is a big chunk in the middle that the griper isn't telling us. I worked in the police for many years and I know that there is no way this would be totally ignored. Somewhere there is a reason for it! I would like to see the case file on this. | 17-1-2010 | As I understand it "pikey" is an insult that was used mostly in regard to travellers of Irish descent but these days I have heard people use it almost as an alternative to "chav".
However this man did not even write the email and his employee, who did write it, never used the word "pikey" at all, just the phrase "do as you likey". The objection was that "likey" rhymes with pikey and COULD be considered offensive so they phoned the police. How can you be accused of using a word that rhymes with something offensive?
I find it sinister that criminals these days can repeatedly break into people's home or mug them and be let off with just a warning but you can be arrested for expressing an opinion. I have never used racially offensive language in my life, and have no desire to, but I don't think it is something that you should be arrested for unless you are inciting a crime.

Gipsies, as in Romany people, are an ethnic group, but they are by and large not the scum causing all this trouble, although they do have their faults. I happen to know a little about this through involvement with an organisation doing work amongst the Roma people in Eastern Europe, mainly Romania but also Hungary and Poland.
What are comomnly called Gipsies, or pejoratively, Pikeys, in the UK are also known as 'New Age Travellers' and they are simply lowlife scum who want to derive the benefits of a structured welfare state without contributing to it. In one word thieves and parasites. It is an insult to the Gipsy/Roma people to liken them to these vermin.

| 17-1-2010 | A business man was arrested in front of his wife and child and told he would be handcuffed if he did not agree to go to the police station. He was fingerprinted and his DNA was taken and he was told that it would be kept indefinitely. His house was searched and his and his wife’s computers were taken. His crime?
An employee of his had sent an email from work to the local council objecting to a mobile home that had been put, without planning permission, on a piece of land owned by the gypsies, in a local beauty spot.
He said that he objected to the “do as you likey attitude” of erecting a building without planning permission. The council considered that as this rhymed with “pikey” it could be taken as being offensive to gypsies as a racial group!
This is a man who has been arrested not for anything he did but for an email sent by an employee in which nothing racist was said but a word was used which rhymed with something someone at the council thougt was racially offensive.
Please would someone tell me, was Star Trek factual after all and have we been moved through time and space to communist Russia under the KGB? Mind you, even there you could only be arrested for saying something not something that might rhyme with something!

| 08-1-2010 | I used to have a great deal of respect for the police - until I needed them. Then, I quickly realised that they are fully immersed into the 'tick box' culture and 'targets' of the Blair/Brown Britain that we have to live in. Unfortunately, it is the nature of many people who enter into the police force, particularly those with just the basic entrance requirements, that they are naturally inclined to be subservient to 'authority', and to obey rules and regulations with little desire, or capacity, to question the validity of such rules and regulations. A tick box/target culture is probably a desireable context for these type of people; their 'performance' can easily be assessed relative to inflexible rules handed down by an idiotic government. Of course, the consequence is that the police lose respect from the public, and most people would not put themselves out when it is the police that need them. However, having said that, it is without doubt that there will be a signficant minority of the police force who do an admirable job in the face of very difficult circumstances, including trying to compensate for the inadequacies and abuses of their bigoted, idiotic colleagues. I think the minimum entrance requirements to become a police officer need to be raised to a much higher level, and they should have much more independence from stupid, stupid governments like the one we presently have in power. | miserablemoaninggit |
