Why cycle on the footpath instead of the road?

Danger to pedestrians
Cycling is a popular and healthy alternative to the motor car with the obvious environmental advantages, but please, don't justify your actions by saying that cycling on the road is too dangerous!
|
I can sympathise with cyclists when they say that they feel unsafe and threatened on our roads due to the amount of traffic and of course through the actions of selfish drivers. What about the danger to pedestrians though?

| 28-1-2010 | Alr,
why is the idea of insurance for cyclists "ridiculous"? If you injure someone while illegally cycling on the pavement or riding through a red light why should you not have to pay their medical costs or made to pay other costs in the same way as a guilty car driver would ?

| 18-1-2010 | Please don't tar all cyclist with the same brush.
When I used to cycle with my bamp, when we had to go on the pavement we would always make way for pedestrians, or if it was too busy dismount altogether.
And as for Me's idea on insurance and tax, that is an absolutely ridiculous idea.

| 03-1-2010 | Cyclists and pavements do not mix well, despite the thought of an increasing number of cyclists. In the past, I've even been threatened by cyclists, who offered to deck me, so I wouldn't have to get out of their way on a pavement in future. I would not be surprised to find, that these same ...more | Kryton |

It is precisely your arrogant and condesending attitude towards others that inspired my original gripe.
Your only justification for putting others at risk of injury is that "it's not against the law". (i.e you won't be caught and cannot be prosecuted so it&...more | Sandman |

| 31-12-2009 | Rori is right, these people that cycle on pavements are a danger to everyone around them. they don't take the least bit of care even in crowded areas. It is just the same where I live. | 30-12-2009 | I am fed up with cyclists getting away with more and more selfish and dangerous behaviour. Cycling on the pavement has become almost the norm now in many places and if they hit you they don’t stop and even blame the pedestrian!
