Asylum seekers in the UK

Too many?

This is quite a lively debate on the topic of asylum seekers near bicester in the UK. Are you for or against the current government policy on asylum seekers. Are we doing our bit, or have we done more than enough?

So this is it the French have finally decided to succumb to closing the Sangatte camp, on the grounds that we in the UK accept half. Why? Have we not got enough ‘British Citizens’ already?

30-8-2010 Oh my gosh, going out on the streets of UK, on the buses or shopping, or watching TV is like walking in upon an episode of Star Trek or Dr Who, or the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy: Vogons and Vulcans everywhere. Enter Tresco's Supermarket and there's a Dalek from southern climes serving you, not a son or daughter of the Snow Queen, nor a descendant of King Arthur, but rather a Martian, or a Venusian. Buy Petrol at any garage or filling station were you served by a indigenous one? No! One thing else, nearly all the drunks and beggars on the streets, all the bag ladies are autochthonous.Sci-Fi Country
28-8-2010 fedup states he has a job so its fairly obvious he does pay tax you thick ignorant dogooder. I bet theres millions more immigrants who dont pay tax, sit on their backside all day, shoplift from charity shops, steal purses, pick pockets and claim every benefit under the sun, than the ones who do pay taxes.Mrs Trumpet
28-8-2010 fwdup I doubt if you pay a penny in tax. On the other hand I know many immigrants who do pay tax.MA
17-8-2010 Im sick and tired of goverment with the flippin taxes Why pay more what so that we have to pay for these imigrants to take the pee as if we owe them something come on get real, if I gave up my job and claimed dole I would be thought of as a scrounger yet they get the simpathy vote what a joke.Like a lot of folk why should we work are codds off to pay for some imigrant to live here and not get a job. Pull your finger out lets get england back on trackfedup
17-8-2010 Goverment complaing about the state of england and its ecomony. well maybe if we didnt have to pay out for the hundreds ie thousands of asylum seekers we may be better off.adul
15-8-2010 This govt is paying out money it took in taxes 6 weeks ago, in 1975 the timescale was 19 weeks, in 2020 it is predicted that it will be 11 days. Why is it shortening? because industry is finding ways to achieve more with less manpower. The number of unemployed is rising due to cutbacks and companies moving to cheap labour markets, the unemployed and those on benefits do not put into the system but take from it. Asylum seekers cost approx £12K each before their claim is accepted/rejected, they take more from the collective pot of cash then they will ever put into it even if they worked here for 50 years, they have a habit of sending money home to relatives who use it to buy local services the last investigation which was stopped by govt indicated that immigrants and asylum seekers transferred approx £8 Million per week to their country of birth, thereofre contributing little to the UK economy. Another problem is that asylum seekers are usually unski11ed labour seeking better economic circumstances and not at risk of persecution, this is something they go to great lengths to hide by destroying paperwork and any documents which identifies them. The main problem is that this country is set to achieve a population twice that of France by 2020, but France has a land mass 4 times greater, so. when all the green and pleasant land is covered by concrete and farms are turned into housing estates and everything is imported into the country because all companies have moved elsewhere, how is the govt going to raise taxes from the 20% who wil most probably be civil servants to pay for benefits etc? So if they really are asylum seekers why do travel accross 5 european countries to get here? is it because its goinf to be a better place to live or because its a soft touch for a free handout,Tinkerman
02-8-2010 Yes there is rising crime and rising tensions and a huge clash of cultures, but to suggest that immigration should be stopped and people "should be sent home" is unrealistic, at best. Everyone, except the most deluded, can see that. I thoroughly enjoy going down to the Asian market, buying fresh produce (supermarkets and "organic" crap have nothing on them) really cheap and believe it or not, people engage you in conversation and they appreciate you taking the time to get to know them and their culture. I don't give a toss if it sounds "bleeding heart doogooder leftie" to the cynics, but I will not sit in my living room, curtains drawn, grinding my death and stressing myself into an early grave - balls to that. I strongly suggest that you don't judge all of the UK, based on life in London. Ethnic tensions exist all over the world, but they are not as bad as the media would have you believe and they are lot more isolated events than you think.Yppy
02-8-2010 anonymous, I am very sorry to hear about your neighbour and you're right, it is reprehensible that anyone - especially someone who is disabled - would be subjected to such treatment, no ifs or buts. I travel around the country every week as part of my job and I have been to most parts of London, from the posh bits in Henley and Windsor, to Brixton and Dagenham. I will tell you that London and its surrounding areas are not pleasant places to be. They are run down (not West London of course) and just plain depressing. It is a different world, even compared to places like Sheffield, Bradford and parts of Manchester. I've been on London buses and the tube and yes, it's crowded, disorganised, expensive and miserable. How they think this will work when the Olympics come to town, is beyond me - it's going to be nothing short of chaos. I believe that what we are both describing is a failure of every consecutive government of the past 20 years (and beyond) to care for the British people, regardless of colour, religion or background. Residents of these areas don't build the roads, police the streets or come up with good plans to accommodate the influx of people. The fact is that we've not had a PM with balls in a very long time - if they're not terrified of the media, they pander to their Eton brethren and make sure they have everything they need before everyone else.Yppy
01-8-2010 yppy The area of London that I live in went from about 10% black and Asian to 80/90% black and Asian in a decade. Can you say the same of your town? You hardly ever hear English spoken any more and queueing for buses is a thing of the past. Some bus routes have become so overused that there is standing room only for most of the day , not just in the rush hour. I got a bus home from the tube yesterday at 11.50 at night and could barely squeeze on let alone get a seat. The local big supermarket has queues going down each aisle every afternoon and evening. It looks like Christmas even though every till is open. You would have to see it to believe it. There is now a high level of aggression in a place that used to be quite pleasant and crime IS rising all the time, especially violent crime. It does not take a lot to tip an area over into becoming a place where no one feels they belong and no one gives a damn about anyone else. I have friends who are second generation Asian or Caribbean and they feel the same. The town is becoming a hell hole and anyone who can is leaving. Parents that I know, including black British people, cannot get their children into school, have to hold them back a year and then take them to schools that are a bus ride away instead of the schools that are near to where they live as the pressure on places is so great. There is similar pressure on dentists, doctors and hospitals.anonymous
01-8-2010 Since when were the problems in every other country in the world the UK's problem? We are no longer a Superpower and should start behaving accordingly. We need to start concentrating our efforts & monies internally and sorting this broken land. Putting aside the emotive issues on mass immigration, there is simply no room, no jobs, no money to support all these dossers - the islams all have plenty to say about us - if we are that bad why do they all flock here? - free welfare. If an individual seeking entry has something to contribute their case should be considered, otherwise mass immigration should be stopped NOW.Ping Pong
01-8-2010 Its liberal dogooding tossers like yppy who ruin this country and should be booted out along with all the asylum seeking thieves and scroungers.Tristram from George and Mildred
31-7-2010 I wonder where you live yppy. Have you experienced the effect of mass immigration in your home town? How are they "forced into ghettos" ? Although this gripe is entitled asylum seekers in the UK, most people coming here are actually economic migrants and not asylum seekers.anonymous
