The Weekly Gripe

Tap water health and safety, ordering a glass of tap water

KFC wouldn't serve me tap water

KFC couldn't sell me tap water

I ran a full service restaurant and a small hotel, in another country admittedly, so I am not without experience in the hospitality industry, and I know that by law we were obliged to serve tap water to anyone requesting it.

I was refused tap water on the grounds that 'Health and Safety' regulations meant they were not allowed to serve it. Sheltering behind this pathetic and untrue type of excuse makes me see red.

21-3-2008KFC is just another typical Fast buck making outfit trying to get you to buy water on which they make a bit of profit and refusing tap water is just another way of trying to enforce this blatant commercialism. In a typical restaurant if you ask for water the waiter/waitress usually asks, "st...moreChris
15-3-2008And another ....... It takes three litres of water to bottle one litre of water, and a litre of mineral water generates 600 times more carbon dioxide than a litre of tap water, not to mention the fossil fuels used in production and shipping. "The fact of the matter is that we do not need to ...moreMikeP
15-3-2008From a newspaper article : It is a triumph of modern marketing that people in the United Kingdom, with universal access to cheap, clean water in the home, choose to consume an average of 37 litres of bottled water per person per year. Unfortunately, a litre of bottled mineral water generates 600 ...moreMikeP

28-2-2008I saw a program on this a few weeks, the bottled water is taken from Scotland shipped over to countries where cheap labour is used and shipped backed to the UK , so not only is the environmental impact harsh to the environment, it exploits workers in the third world, I am with Mike on this one, ther...moreJonny

28-2-2008Er - I thought this was a simple gripe about being refused tapwater in a food outlet??? Why do some people use Weekly Gripe as a starting block for their thoroughly nasty ranting and railing against other individuals, whilst giving the false impression they are really crusaders against the injus...moreGrind that axe
28-2-2008JS : Your comments are not valid because, however much it costs to maintain and clean the tap water supply, the infrastructure is already there, and it would be unthinkable to remove it. You might know more about water distribution than I do if you worked for a water authority, but how does it ...moreMikeP
28-2-2008That is not rubbish it costs billions of pounds in revenue per year to clean and maintain our water, not to mention the amount of energy it consumes to get to your taps, hence the Carbon output is millions of megatons per year so IT IS a Hypocritical thing to say, please note Mike that I was employe...moreJS
