Foreign fruit instead of British fruit in the supermarkets

Where are all our English apples?

Where are all the English Apples?

More to the point, why are Tesco stores full of New Zealand Braeburn and Royal Gala, French Golden Delicious, Australian Pink Lady, American Empire and Spartan and Dutch Elstar.

We have a wonderful selection of apples grown right here in this country, surely it makes sense to stand behind our home grown produce. It's a shame the supermakets do not consider English apples as commercially viable.

22-10-2007this story might interest you about innocent smoothies and their decision to choose strawberries from elsewhere in europe rather than from the UK http://brightonthemoney.wordpress.com/2007/10/03/innocent-of-what/major
17-8-2007I absolutely agree with you. I noticed Tesco had apples from Chile New Zealand and Argentinia, but none from England apart from Bramley cooking apples which are all very fine but not much use if you want to eat an apple raw. Similarly no English pears. I asked in the store why no English Ap...moreJonathan

14-12-2006This is because people expect fresh fruit all the year round. I grow my own Cox's but they are not ready until October.Grumpy
27-10-2006think someone should redesign the trolley to attract young people like me, as a brilliant thing to carry home shopping without having to break your arms dragging home if you don’t have a car.klie
27-10-2006maybe people should start looking at the local market stall traders again to get the food grown in britain rmember only 10 years ago my mum mostly bought food from local market traders and not much from supermarkets, with her using her 4 wheeled shopping trolley and not using carrier bags.klie
27-10-2006saw an ad for tesco now selling variety packs of english apples have never heard of before, so you could try looking out for these.klie
15-10-2006Most go into making cider. Growers, like me,get MORE money from sending our crops to brewers. Selling to supermarkets just isn't worth it. MInd you, the cider they make is CRAP as well.Anon
12-10-2006Granny Smiths rock! I love they way they crunch and have loads of juice. English apples tend to be very soft and with little taste which is probably why no one wants to buy them!Eddie
12-10-2006I prefer english apples to the foreign tasteless mass produced rubbish but companies like Tesco want to purchase thousands of tons at a time. The british farmers cant get their act together and collaborate to supply the large quantities as has been said above. I worked as a buyer not with apples bu...moresimmy276

11-10-2006It's all because our hopeless growers are unable to collaborate in collectives large enough to supply the likes of Tescos, M&S, Sainsburys and so on. Our growers are nothing but a bunch of hick farmers.Debon Zider Mann
