Foreigners speak english, then switch

Rudeness and foreign language

Rude people

It is very irritating when you walk into a room and colleagues are speaking English, then they switch to their native language. It feels like you have been suddenly excluded, Do they have something to hide? it's so extremely rude.

We’ve got quite a melting pot of different ethnic groups here in the UK. However, our primary language as spoken by the vast majority of people is still English as far as I am aware.

12-4-2008I live in America and their are plenty of Spanish speaking people around this area. I find it awful that they think that we don't know any Spanish and talk about people in Spanish when they are near. Some people do know Spanish and know what they are saying. I think we need a universal langauge ...moreamy
30-1-2008Petpo (and others), I think you missed the point here. The rudeness comes from the fact that the individuals concerned were happily having a conversation in English and then switched to their native tongue when I walked into the room. They might have just as well have said "Shh shh, we don&#...moreAnon

28-1-2008I am a Spanish resident in the UK as many other from UK are living in Spain. I have never seen a couple of English person, speaking between them in Spanish while living in Spain. 17-11-2007hmm, I think many people on this forum are judging others by their own, very low standards. Just because someone is talking in another language doesn't neccessarily mean they are insulting you, its either a very private conversation or they just can't be bothered to mentally translate their...morejk12
16-11-2007Good on you Si. That's exactly the kind of thing we are talking about. People who use their native tongue to have a private conversation and think they can be rude and abusive to people safe in the knowledge that others around them won't understand them. Truly despicable.Rude awakening
16-11-2007Paddy The Greek - You are wrong. English is the international language and is also the international business language of the world. Example - If a German businessman wishes to do business with a Japanese businessman, they communicate in English. It's nothing to do with importance in th...moreSi

27-7-2007I had the same experience as Lost Faith in a shop in UK. As an American, I did not confront on anothers turf. Two ladies in full veiled attire went ahead of 4 in a check line. I do not equate this with racism of the Anglo Saxon countries.....It is just plain Rude. If you are in a country that...moreRK
11-4-2007I worked for a short while in an environment where there were 3 white English people and more than 100 people of Indian origin (some were English). I found them on the whole to be a pleasant bunch to work with and formed some close bonds with a few. I discovered that there is actually not a word for...moreLost faith
11-4-2007The English think that their language is "the" international Language because of their importance in the world, but it is not! The rest of the world use English as their second lamguage because the USA use it as their first.Paddy the Greek
