Alternatives to petrol, how about vegetable oil or hydrogen?

Petrol prices too high

Petrol too expensive?

We are all suffering because of high oil prices and the big companies still anounce record profits. Are their alternatives to petrol? How about vegetable oil or hydrogen - apparently its not the stuff of science fiction anymore.

The price of petrol is now at silly levels now in the UK. Oil giant BP has recently unveiled record first-half profits at the same time. Are they rubbing our face in it?

07-8-2010 The UK has one of the cheapest petrol and diesel prices in Europe. When it is taxed though the governement then charges us VAT on top of the tax so we are being taxed on the tax. A litre of petrol sold by BP, Shell etc is only 30 to 35 pence per litre. I work for one of the major oil companies and can tell you that the only winners when petrol is sold is the govrnemnt. It will be rising again in January when VAT goes uo to 20 % so be prepared plus there is a rise on the cards before that in October pledged by labour. You will also notice that the cost of LPG is now double what it was in 2002 - all tax.Bing
06-7-2010 Now that crude oil is about half it was when petrol/oil prices hit the roof in 2008, I think, and the value of the pound is going up against the dollar, isn't it time for fuel prices to fall ? I know fuel normally costs more in the holiday season ( rip off ) are there other reasons I don't realise or are we just being ripped off ?Malc

06-6-2010 So Brown has a PHD, so where was he exactly being clever with the car scrappage scheme that he ran whilst in power? A £2000-00 grant towards buying a foriegn manufactured car, what was that supposed to do to help the UK economy?Gainsborough lad.

12-5-2010 It's not as if the government decides to just squandor the money for no reason. The people who run our country are actually highly-educated men and women (former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has a ph.d and began at university aged 16). They are doing their best to run the country. If they choose not to invest the fuel tax on alternative fuels it is because it is not viable. It really annoys me that practically every politician is hated, and it's really only because they have power and tax your money, an essential if you value the NHS, police force, and/or any other government-paid service.Resident of Conservative Bedfordshi
30-4-2010 Grumpy 'ole' (P.C.) person is very correct, in fact 100% and it will never change, you try taking an apple away from a monkey, it will shred your hands for your troubles, and these people are the same...chop ooo ee

19-4-2010 I gave up my car over a year ago, a purely finance based choice. It was a hard to adjust at first but the fact that I had cut off one of many routes into my wallet taken by low life parasitic scum that lounge around Westminster helped me through it. The biggest problem was and still is the dire state of public transport, it’s a joke! If the government were serious about their green tax lies they surely would have invested heavily in public transport. But no they just increased taxes as per usual. I do not believe the global warming lies anymore (yes I was taken in by it initially) but government has ruined the credibility of the worlds scientific institutes with their interfering and doctoring of data to suite there tax needs. But whatever your view on this argument is, it really does not matter, if you believe all this b*ll sh*t or not you’re still being shafted every time you fill up your car or hop on a bus/train /plane. Our government of second rate social workers seem oblivious to the fact that taxation here in the UK is now extortion and the public cannot meet their demands anymore. After the election taxes will rocket (to help the wealthy elite) and more people will fail to cope. The government seem to be doing everything as badly as possible……….. Incompetence! The best excuse to do exactly as you please! Don’t worry sheeple when Britain is a complete basket case our treasonous government will hand us over for total European control.Aleedsfella
