How to get chewing gum out of clothes

Isn't it wonderful when you come home from a night out, or if you have been to work on the bus, train or whatever and you find a big ugly lump of chewing gum stuck to your clothes?

This really annoys me because there is absolutely no excuse for it.  Chewing gum comes with this really convenient bit of silver foil that you can be used to tidily dispose of it once you are done.  Why then, must some ignoramuses out there go around sticking their gum on seats or other similar places, where it is likely to get stuck to someone else's clothes?  It's just anti-social and there is absolutely no need for it.

Chewing gum pollution is a big problem for councils around the country. I shudder to think how much of our council taxes go towards cleaning this stuff off the street just because somebody couldn't be bothered to put it in the bin.  Okay, it tastes great and I freely admit to chewing gum on occasion myself, so I'm not saying it should be banned or anything like that.  There is even a chewing gum on the market, which the makers say can enhance the breasts; now I guess we know what Britney Spears has been up to!  Absolutely bizarre that one like, but apparently it does have some useful medical properties.

But please, for the sake of the rest of us, dispose of your chewing gum sensibly when you have finished and help keep Britain tidy!

Chewing gum removal - how to get it out of clothes

"Put washing up liquid on the chewing gum (if spread in) and then add salt. With another piece of fabric rub against the thread of the garment. It really works!!" - Lydia

OMG I had gum on nylon sports shorts and had tried all the freezing things, then tried this method and it was gone in 2-3 minutes. Fantastic.

Amazing! Years ago my favourite jeans got ruined after accidentally sitting in some chewing gum. I tried to freeze it off but it was too ingrained. I just rediscovered them during a wardrobe clear-out and decided to give your tip a go before resigning the jeans to the bin. I kept having to reapply the liquid and salt, but perseverance prospered. I'm well chuffed - thank you!

Just came home with a very abusive fiance after she sat in chewing gum on the tube coming home. I copped it in the ear as an innocent bystander and thought a nice guilt trip was the go. So use white (or even malt as I found out) vinegar. Fill a shot glass and microwave the vinegar for 30secs til hot. Soak the offending patch for 30 secs before using a teatowel or similar clean fabric to wipe the gum off in short repetitive strokes. Took me 3mins tops. Fiance's clean dress pants hanging in plain view for when she wakes in the morning. Hellooooo apology hehehe...

Chewing gum on my new dress. Tried the freezer method - didn't work. Tried the vinegar - didn't work. Was on the verge of throwing the dress away but stumbled across this. It does work - just be careful what you use to rub the salt/washing up liquid mixture off with. My dress now has some little holes in it, but they are far preferable to the gum!
