How to deal with a busy body neighbour?

I have lived in my flat for about 5 years now and I love it here.  It's right next to two town centres, is in a lovely old maisonette block and most of of my neighbours are great.  Except for one smelly old racist busy body.

From almost the first day I lived there she has picked on me.  Here's just a brief glimpse at her greatest hits.  She has gone through my rubbish (that one still mystifies me, she has accused my dog of crapping in her garden (it's a three legged Bichon Frise and can't get up and down stairs properly so quite how she would have gone down two flights of stairs, over a fence, done the business and come back again is beyond me).

I shouldn't walk around my flat at night...

I've had her quiz me on why I come and go at so called strange hours.  I have also had her tell me that I shouldn't walk around my flat at night.  All of this pales into insignificance though compared to her actions the other day.

My cousins had popped down from London to visit me and after them making a fuss of my dog and having a bite to eat they were waiting outside whilst I sorted the dog out.  This was my neighbours cue to come out of her place and tell them to move as "your sort ain't wanted here, this is England" and "You blacks are always up to no good".

Did I mention my 2 cousins were mixed race and female, and that I was a great big white geezer?  Sorry!

Door handle

So I came out of my place as my cousins were getting upset.  She took one look at me and said "I should have know you were one of those types, a *****r lover".  I was too dumbstruck to say anything straight away and since then I haven't seen her either.

I can't clump her because she is an old woman, I can;t go to the Old Bill as they'd laugh at me.  There's not a lot my landlord can do as I am a council tenant and she is private.  At least the rest of the neighbours hate her too!

Still, bloody old people eh?

Make a formal complaint to her landlord (the council) as she has a tenant's agreement and this kind of racist and unreasonable behaviour will be covered by it by law. Keep a diary of times, dates and incidents. Try to talk to the other tenants and see if they have had problems or witnessed anything. Get them to write it down, signed and dated.

She can be evicted if there is enough evidence of anti-social behaviour - but you need the EVIDENCE and from enough sources as possible.

Buy a voice recorder and have it switched on in your pocket whenever you go out that way if she mouths off again you can record it. I would also recconend you diary every single ncident however insignificant you think it might be. When you have some evidence send a community officer to her home. These actions worked wonders for me and now if my horrible neighbour dare say anything and I have her recorded she gets slammed with an ASBO.

This old woman is nasty, bitter and lonely person. She has nothing better to do then to stew in her own mess and then blame others for anything they can find. Hence she is rummaging through your bins, etc. She is miserable and will probably moan about everything and anything and you are an easy target. Some old people can be forgiven because at that age, they can't do anything and hate other. But when it crosses the line where in this case, she is downright nasty, unkind.

Be patient and her time will come when she gets so old she has to go to home.

You can go to the Police and should. You have witnesses and her behaviour was inappropriate, offensive and illegal. Man up and go visit the Plod for heavens sake.

I read this with sympathy for you, having had nightmare neighbours like this. And then you spoilt it with yours last line. Is being ageist really much better than being racist?

I would complain to the council any way and see if there is anything they can do as she probable has other complaints against her

Why even let people dictate your lifestyle? We've all come across somebody like that! She probably feels so lonely that she envies you, that people come to see you and not her! She's doing it to get attention, and if you "feed her", so to speak, she'll dig her heels in all the more! I, personally, don't care if she's private - it doesn't make her any different, she's not a god, or anything like that!! If I were you, I'd get some independent advice, somewhere like the CAB or even your local council or as ironic as this may sound, Age Concern, so someone can deal with this bitter, lonely old person! All the best!!

Whatever you decide to do about this woman, be sure to do it legally. And try to move around quietly when you come home after 9 or 10 at night. It is very annoying to have a "big white geezer" clomping around overhead as though it's noon when you are trying to get some shut-eye. Maybe when you stop waking her up at night, she'll start being pleasanter to be around. Or if you can't be quiet, move somewhere where you can make noise without being a pain.

I tend to agree with Mr. Tonga, this "person" (for bloody bigot as our last Prime Minister might say) is using this harassment to maintain control of you, she always has the upper hand in the relationship and doubtless thinks you are running scared of her.

That's absolutely disgusting. I can't believe that people are so narrow minded still. It mystifies me completely that people can judge others on the colour of their skin alone and then be verbally abusive purely because of that. Perhaps you could record her vicious comments and then take it to the council and ask to be rehoused? Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be English, I found much more tolerance in South Africa after living there for several years. However, I'm in agreement with the previous comment - be sweet and kind and for every nasty comment retaliate with a generous one. Let it go over your head. However, I would find that extremely provocative behaviour and have difficulty resisting retorts (if I could think of them fast enough!).

Have you tried to follow up racial complaints procedures? The citizen's advice bureau should be able to help you and possibly the victim's unit in your area. I wouldn't just assume that the police won't do anything as I have had to call on them when one of my son's young friends bullied him and the police went to take a statement from the bully and his family. That is sometimes enough to make them realise that you are not without support. Don't just grin and take it, bullies back up when confronted by a bigger threat. Good luck.

Order lots of taxis for her between 2 and 5 am and instruct the taxi company to tell the driver to knock the door because you (her really) needs help to carry the suitcases to the Taxi. [IABB]

Not good, even if it seems like a good idea. Why should taxi companies take the flack for wasted time and possibly revenue just because this poster wants to get back at a neighbour. The other two ideas are better because they don't involve innocent third parties.
