UK fishing industry almost destroyed

A few days ago I was watching a news bulletin concerning the recent severe winds in Scotland, and mention was made that a fishing vessel was in difficulties out at sea.

A trawler coming home after a day of fishing

I thought that was only to be expected, but was amazed to hear that this particular craft was Spanish!  Now I understand that the, once proud, Scottish fishing fleet has been decimated over recent years; apparently to conserve fish stocks.  If this is the case then why, on earth, is it considered acceptable for Spanish boats to take a share of this dwindling resource? As well as fishing our waters, we are even extending the use of our coastguard these days to rescue Spanish fishermen when they ‘get into trouble’ in their boats.  What gives?  Don’t we have enough problems with British industry?

A little research will show that our own fishing fleet has been in serious decline for decades and things aren’t getting any better.  Around fifty years ago the industry employed upwards of thirty thousand fishermen.

Today’s fishing fleet may be lucky enough to get into five figures, however information regarding that is pretty sketchy so I am unable to verify this.

Just selling Britain by the pound

It looks to me as if those in charge are just selling Britain by the pound and don’t really care about our fishermen and their families.  If just find it very sad that a once great fishing industry appears to have been just handed over to our European neighbours on a plate.

Britain is an island surrounded by water and fishing has part of our heritage for generations.  Why have successive governments done this and destroyed the livelihood of so many?  Why do they continue cave in to the demands of other European countries?

I heard of some UK fishing boats going over to Spain out of protest with no intent to catch any fish there, just to be seen by the Spanish and cause them to think about being over here....they were arrested at Gunpoint and had the boats confiscated, nets pulled out and burned, one rule for one and a different for another...

I watched a boat I helped on at a shipyard for work experience when I was 14 and at school being broken up on TV earlier this year on a documentry about fishing, the operators had sailed it over to Holland and they put a digger through it for the TV cameras and that was the family's fishing business from peterhead closed for good, a strange coincedence to see the very same boat on TV when thousands have gone the same way........now I hear of the boats from France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Iceland and Norway coming over here and having an open licence when we have limits and have to throw back dead fish instead of reaching our limit and going out less....what a waste...

Captain Birds Eye here from Walton-on-Thames. I never did go to sea. I was wholly a marketing creation. They liked my beard.

Most I ever caught in my life was couple of carp from the Thames at Walton bridge. Some said they saw an alligator swim down the the River Wey Navigation.

There be whales here! oooohhhhaaaarrrggghhhh...

"Only the best for the Captain's table"!

For the bloke who said fisherman should push trolleys at tescos, you belong at the bottom of the ocean son, fishing in many families is a tradition that has been passed on for countless years, I would rather go to sea work long and bloody hard to put food on the table than any job in the world, why you mite ask, to me fishing is more than a living its a lively hood.

The fundamental principle when sharing anything is that the giver needs to ensure their own share is secured first otherwise it is unsustainable and ultimately ends in folly. The disappointing fact about the UK fishing industry is that the UK government is guilty of stealing from UK fishermen to give common fishing resources rights to EU. The UK government should be taken to court and made to pay for their appalling treacherous deeds.

Close the fish 'n chip shops. Burn down the Youngs and Birds Eye factories. Sink the foreign fishing vessels in our waters. Close the firshing ports her. No more eating fish for 200 years.

And don't be taken in by ridiculous claims about being "line caught".

who ki11ed the uk fishing industry?here in nz our main species is hoki,a real versitile fish
during the winter months our main factory would process 1,000 of cases of the fish
which ment long hours there fore plenty of ot.like the uk industry our industry is slowly begining to decline.a prime example of this is sealords in nelson at the top of the south island
why because of japanese, taiwanese, and other overseas fishing vessels coming over here to fish our waters because the greedy tossers had fished out their own waters we are now dependent on countries like chile, argentina, bloody russia and not forgetting china,so yes you can say the kiwi fishing industry is just about stuffed too all because of government policies

The greed just needs to end. Thakfully, measures (involving the use of technology) are in place to ensure the effective enforcement of shared ideals of Member States of the EU. Let's see if this common resource is replenished, as I'm sure it would. One must remember that in development and moving to meet the demands of a now global society, mistakes MUST be made - hopefully the end result is change, growth and improvement - of the CFP.

@ char:
"if they saw the bravary, hard work and passion these men put in to their jobs it would make them stop an think"

I have no doubt that these men are brave and passionate, but that has no bearing on the sustainability of the industry or the moral implications of decimating a massively important link in the food chain. Not to equate the two professions, but simply to show the flaw in your logic, those involved in the slave trade were probably equally passionate and brave, but that doesn't say anything about their actions being right.

well from an nz perspective, our over sold quota system is a shambles, there is no worse way to manage a fishery.everyone who got the "golden handshake" has now sold quota or leases it for ridicolous amounts, leaving no chance for young guys to have a shot

why should we give up our heritage and history because people are worried about the amont of fish in the sea, if anything we're not fishing enough! the goverment has already stopped other traditons why should this be the next? and people are beliving what they read in papers and hear about on telly! if they saw the bravary, hard work and passion these men put in to their jobs it would make them stop an think. BRING BACK FISHING!!!!!!
