A few days ago I was watching a news bulletin concerning the recent severe winds in Scotland, and mention was made that a fishing vessel was in difficulties out at sea.

A trawler coming home after a day of fishing

I thought that was only to be expected, but was amazed to hear that this particular craft was Spanish!  Now I understand that the, once proud, Scottish fishing fleet has been decimated over recent years; apparently to conserve fish stocks.  If this is the case then why, on earth, is it considered acceptable for Spanish boats to take a share of this dwindling resource? As well as fishing our waters, we are even extending the use of our coastguard these days to rescue Spanish fishermen when they ‘get into trouble’ in their boats.  What gives?  Don’t we have enough problems with British industry?

A little research will show that our own fishing fleet has been in serious decline for decades and things aren’t getting any better.  Around fifty years ago the industry employed upwards of thirty thousand fishermen.

Today’s fishing fleet may be lucky enough to get into five figures, however information regarding that is pretty sketchy so I am unable to verify this.

Just selling Britain by the pound

It looks to me as if those in charge are just selling Britain by the pound and don’t really care about our fishermen and their families.  If just find it very sad that a once great fishing industry appears to have been just handed over to our European neighbours on a plate.

Britain is an island surrounded by water and fishing has part of our heritage for generations.  Why have successive governments done this and destroyed the livelihood of so many?  Why do they continue cave in to the demands of other European countries?

why should we give up our heritage and history because people are worried about the amont of fish in the sea, if anything we're not fishing enough! the goverment has already stopped other traditons why should this be the next? and people are beliving what they read in papers and hear about on telly! if they saw the bravary, hard work and passion these men put in to their jobs it would make them stop an think. BRING BACK FISHING!!!!!!

UK fishing industry almost destroyed - So what!? We will just have to import fish into the country from elsewhere, just like we do with almost every kind of produce.

Fishermen will just have to go find another job, there are always trolleys to be collected at Tesco's.

There are a number of ex fishermen who have advocated not to rock the boat and everything will work out ok. Funny they are all OBE's or MBE's now.

The number of people employed directly or indirectly has not changed or slightly increased so its not all bad news especially for those in new non jobs yes at one time they said for every fisherman there used to be 5 onshore processing, transporting or adding value now its for every fisherman there are a least 10 civil servants. So much for SEAFISH say no more. Comments please

Every Goverment goes the sane way hand it over to brussels. Iceland & Norway are the two shining examples of fishing. The uk had its chance and failed, because they did not have anyone strong enough to stand up to various goverments

Go to Iceland and get advice on how to run a fishery, they got rid of us when we were plundering there fishing grounds

The sooner people realise that the Gov do not want a fishing industry (coal). The sooner we will stop arguing with each other and put the blame where it belongs.

The cold hard fact is that we sold our fishing rights so we could join a club in the EEC. thankyou Mr Heath and the tories then it was the turn of Mr Wilson a labourMP ( traitors to the working man)and since they thought it was a great deal, it`s a pity they did`nt create jobs before they destroy them ,

I work in the Merchant navy one of the few that are remaining in a job , just waiting for the AXE to fall then I can join my brothers that have lost their jobs in the Fishing Industry .
*jax241  21-Feb-2006 23:44

Stop fishing. that's the answer.
*Dave  04-Nov-2005 14:42

The british have been over-fishing as badly as everybody else. Plus, you've got the complication of global warming driving fish stocks north.

We're all guilty for plundering the sea. Want to do something about it? Wtop buying cod, haddock, prawns, and all the other species that are reaching dangerously low levels. We need a market-wide consumer boycott, now.
