Not enough disabled parking spaces

My local shopping centre has a multi-story car park, as many do.  Up until recently, they had a decent selection of disabled spaces on every level, right near the lifts.  Very convenient for anyone who was disabled.  However, whoever owns the car park decided it'd be a good idea to add some parent and child spaces.

Fair enough, a lot people shop there with their kids.  Unfortunately, some moron didn't want to lose 'normal' spaces, so instead, we've ended up with a sign over the disabled spaces proclaiming them 'Disabled and Parent and Child Spaces'.  They've combined the two!

Disabled parking spaces

For starters, having kids with you is not akin to being disabled.  Granted, it's difficult, but it's not the same thing at all.  And secondly, there seems to be a lot of selfish parents in our area, because now, there is never a free disabled space, and almost all the cars parked there do not have blue badges.

My brother is an amputee.  He NEEDS those disabled spaces.  He needs the gap to manoeuvre his wheelchair, and as there aren't adequate walkways in the car park, he needs to be close to the elevators, or he's at risk.  He has been hit by a car before, in that very same car park.

Why can't they separate the spaces?  Are they that desperate to squeeze in as many spaces as possible, that they can't just designate a few on each level for people with kids?  And what's the problem with these parents?  Sure, kids in a car park can be a real hassle, but you're sharing with disabled folks.  And maybe, just maybe, they deserve the space a little more than you.

Pedestrian Pat when you see them running to their car or carrying heavy parcels or the person for whom the badge is issued is not being carried in the car. Traffic wardens & the Police ignore this offence, this causes friction between the disabled driver & able bodied drivers which is unfortunatle, I am just an Englishman fighting for my rights.

As a disabled driver I would advise all disabled drivers to take a trip to Bradford for the reason of perspective, This England of ours fobids me to describe the situation there, where even the taxi drivers have blue badges

Bo, what makes you think that people with disabilities don't have jobs or families? Disabled people work, do the school run , have children and all the things that you do and they have every right to shop whenever they choose.

Congo is right that there is sufficient disabled parking in most places if it wasn't abused by people who don't need it.

One's unofficial nemesis, 'anon' is perfectly correct.

Effective enforcement of parking in disabled spaces is all that is required to ensure sufficient capacity although it seems quite inequitable that disabled drivers, especially those with rather vulgar and ostentatious cars should not have to pay the same charges as everyone else.

'Congo' is nitpicking. He's got a hard-on for all things vehicular. Some policing of the disabled spaces would be better. Actually, Bagpuss, you should have called the police and shown them the picture anyway. You can't expect people to behave well. You have to make them.

How do you know there can never be enough? Have you been to every town in the UK? What nonsense to extrapolate your limited experiences to support your risible assertions.

Do not confuse provision with availability, or indeed statutory requirements with economics.

Disabled parking - I see people mis use their badges all the time. And yes - I know that some disabilities are not visible or apparent - but we all know when we are being taken for a monkey. I saw an asian guy get out of his car which had a disabled badge. So I took out my mobile phone, took a photo of him and his car registration and told him I would report it. He got back in the car and moved. A friend told me that her mother is disabled, but all the family borrows the badge to park. So is it any wonder that people ignore the spaces and park in disabled places?

There are NEVER far too many disabled spaces! I have struggled for 10 years to take my mother out who is confined to a wheelchair and often find that disabled spaces are used by ANYONE! I have even had someone park so close to mum's disability van that I was unable to get the ramp down and put her in it.

I had a 30 minute wait in the cold for the driver to return and move (without an apology or even an acknowledgement that he had done this) even though there is a sign on the back of the vehicle clearly stating not to park within 8 metres of the back!!

My mum was even kept waiting for a disabled toilet in Disney Florida by a mother who had taken her two children in there and spent the entire time CHANGING her OWN clothes!! Her daughter was obviously fed up and opened the door. She saw we were waiting and told her mother - this was a girl of around 10 who seemed embarrassed at how her mother was behaving.

She was told in clear (but not profane) language of her utter selfishness - response? None - not an apology - nothing. It was as if my mother and I did not exist.

People should try taking someone out in a wheelchair before they make claims of 'too many' disabled facilities. You will soon learn how hard it is - and it is made harder by self-righteous bigots.

There are far too many Disabled and Child car parking spaces!!!
Most of them stay empty except at peak times. I have noticed that people won't park in those spaces even late at night in the supermarkets when there are literally dozens of spaces.

ho hum - 21-Sep-10 22:54

so are you saying disabled should have priority??? Think yourself lucky you get a free car with free tax and free benifits to pay for it all! Most able bodies who work for a living cant afford that luxury! Youl have to do what most motorist do and find another spot to park!

Biscuitbum, how do you know that the people parked in the bays are not genuinly disabled and are using fake badges?

Pedestrian Pat - 8-Sep-10 20:59

There is a disabled space on the main street where I once lived, and I never once noticed it to be in use. The same with car parks where very few, if any, of the disabled bays are in use, except perhaps by the users of fake badges.

Personally, I feel that all car parking spaces should be the same size. (The size of current disabled bays). Many times you park in an empty spot to find a huge SUV in the space next to you making it impossible to get into the car. In the case of disabled bays though they would still be reserved at the front of the store. Also, I believe that 10% of spaces must be reserved for the disabled. This isn't proportionate to the amount of disabled drivers in the country.

I know everything about it. Like I said previously, the Yellow Bus Theorem is the best idea for these kind of people. I will not listen to one of them go on about requiring more parking spaces when in turn there are far too many.

I literally see nothing wrong with sacking them from all their jobs, and afterwards financially supporting them governmentally and have them go out for picnics and days up the park feeding the ducks. By all means come out with a pint with your singular arm, but please, do not try to make your misery become mine.

How very extraordinary it is that some people who blather away about something they know nothing about have to resort to talking gibberish in a pathetic attempt to cover up their ignorance.

Holger Badstub ... you have been rumbled !!

Holger : I did not say that you can use your whip to flick off lice. My horses would never have lice ... I am not sure that horses can even have lice, can they? I said you can use your whip to flick off horse flies, you moron! If I EVER used my whip to hit my horse, then I would say so.

You do not need to use a whip on a well-schooled horse to make him go faster. You can achieve this in a more ski11ed and kinder way with your seat and your legs.

I will say yet again ... I do not whip horses. Gedditt ??
