Not enough disabled parking spaces
|
My local shopping centre has a multi-story car park, as many do. Up until recently, they had a decent selection of disabled spaces on every level, right near the lifts. Very convenient for anyone who was disabled. However, whoever owns the car park decided it'd be a good idea to add some parent and child spaces. Fair enough, a lot people shop there with their kids. Unfortunately, some moron didn't want to lose 'normal' spaces, so instead, we've ended up with a sign over the disabled spaces proclaiming them 'Disabled and Parent and Child Spaces'. They've combined the two! |

For starters, having kids with you is not akin to being disabled. Granted, it's difficult, but it's not the same thing at all. And secondly, there seems to be a lot of selfish parents in our area, because now, there is never a free disabled space, and almost all the cars parked there do not have blue badges. My brother is an amputee. He NEEDS those disabled spaces. He needs the gap to manoeuvre his wheelchair, and as there aren't adequate walkways in the car park, he needs to be close to the elevators, or he's at risk. He has been hit by a car before, in that very same car park. |

Why can't they separate the spaces? Are they that desperate to squeeze in as many spaces as possible, that they can't just designate a few on each level for people with kids? And what's the problem with these parents? Sure, kids in a car park can be a real hassle, but you're sharing with disabled folks. And maybe, just maybe, they deserve the space a little more than you. Congo is right that there is sufficient disabled parking in most places if it wasn't abused by people who don't need it.
Effective enforcement of parking in disabled spaces is all that is required to ensure sufficient capacity although it seems quite inequitable that disabled drivers, especially those with rather vulgar and ostentatious cars should not have to pay the same charges as everyone else.
How do you know there can never be enough? Have you been to every town in the UK? What nonsense to extrapolate your limited experiences to support your risible assertions.
Do not confuse provision with availability, or indeed statutory requirements with economics.
I had a 30 minute wait in the cold for the driver to return and move (without an apology or even an acknowledgement that he had done this) even though there is a sign on the back of the vehicle clearly stating not to park within 8 metres of the back!!
My mum was even kept waiting for a disabled toilet in Disney Florida by a mother who had taken her two children in there and spent the entire time CHANGING her OWN clothes!! Her daughter was obviously fed up and opened the door. She saw we were waiting and told her mother - this was a girl of around 10 who seemed embarrassed at how her mother was behaving.
She was told in clear (but not profane) language of her utter selfishness - response? None - not an apology - nothing. It was as if my mother and I did not exist.
People should try taking someone out in a wheelchair before they make claims of 'too many' disabled facilities. You will soon learn how hard it is - and it is made harder by self-righteous bigots.
Most of them stay empty except at peak times. I have noticed that people won't park in those spaces even late at night in the supermarkets when there are literally dozens of spaces.

I literally see nothing wrong with sacking them from all their jobs, and afterwards financially supporting them governmentally and have them go out for picnics and days up the park feeding the ducks. By all means come out with a pint with your singular arm, but please, do not try to make your misery become mine.

Holger Badstub ... you have been rumbled !!
You do not need to use a whip on a well-schooled horse to make him go faster. You can achieve this in a more ski11ed and kinder way with your seat and your legs.
I will say yet again ... I do not whip horses. Gedditt ??
"Nikki - You are the frigging legend, son. And don't let anyone sort you against it".
I am sorry, but I haven't got a clue what you mean! Please could you translate! For a start, I am not a "son" ... I am female.
Sally: Shut up. I was right at the very beginning.
