Orange dolphin pay as you go free Internet?

I am an Orange Mobile pay as you go customer and I recently got a new (second hand) phone.  I've been on their fixed rate all day tarrif for as long as I can remember and I figured that since my "new" phone had an HTML browser, I'd see what packages I could add to take advantage of that.  I've been aware for some time that they offer a reward system whereby you can get free texts, minutes or Internet access if you top up by at least 10 a month.

This isn't something I've taken advantage before as up until as I barely spend more than a 5 a month.  Orange do these animal packages now (what the hell is that all about anyway??) and there's a range of different options depending on your needs.  Some people need more talk time while others want music, texts or the Internet.  The problem is that Orange's advertising both on their website and on their automated messaging system is quite ambiguous almost to the point of being downright misleading.

For all you fun-loving, sociable types, Dolphin plans give you unlimited free texts and free Internet on your phone.

For example, I was interested in the "Dolphin" package and on their website it says "Love Facebook & Bebo?  For all you fun-loving, sociable types, Dolphin plans give you unlimited free texts and free Internet on your phone." That implies that you get access to the Internet right?  I then rang orange on 452 and the message said "If you're a bit of a Facebook, Twitter or Bebo fan you'll get free unlimited Internet." Well this just sounds absolutely fabulous I thought.

Orange mobile packages - Dolphin

I thought I had better dig around a bit and find out as much information as I could before I changed my call plan.  On the Orange shop website a different page said "unlimited free texts plus free access to Facebook, Bebo and MySpace".  I then dialled 450 and went through the various options to get to the orange shop that way and for the dolphin package the lady said "free texts and free Internet".  This was at the point where I could actually change to the new tariff and I was warned that once I moved I wouldn't be able to change back.

I started to get suspicious and decided to call Orange customer service to find out the truth about the "Dolphin" package because by now nothing was clear to me and to me, free unlimited Internet means just that - not three websites that I never use.

I spent a while stuck in the automated menu system again before making it through to an option that said it would transfer me to Orange customer service... with a one off charge of 25p.  Naturally I hung up and used the land line free phone number instead.  With about 15 to 20 minutes of being passed from department to department and of course being hung up on at least once I finally made it through to the pay as you go customer service desk.

The customer service representative I spoke to didn't try to hide the information from me, although I had to explicitly ask whether or not the free Internet access with that package was only for certain websites.  She confirmed that it was and it was only for Bebo, Facebook and Myspace (what happened to Twitter as mentioned on 452?).  Internet access outside these sites would result in additional charges.  Interestingly enough, I was even told by this person that other customers had been complaining about the lack of "free unlimited Internet access" with the Dolphin package.  When did Bebo, Myspace and Facebook become the Internet anyway?

So what do we think... misleading advertising?  Trading standards anyone?

Just been ripped off twenty quid by Orange "free internet scam". All credit went although I had not used Orange to connect to the internet in a month. GPRS had eaten all my credit, not a penny by the internet, (I've been using wi-fi). Spoke to a call centre, got swore at for being thick! Surely connecting through GPRS to the internet is connecting to the internet? Not according to Orange. The phone has taken my credit, not Orange! If you have a GPRS enabled phone TURN OFF DATA until you want to use the internet, turn off again as soon as you are finished to minimise charges. I've just moved from Blackberry to Galaxy S2 so was not aware of this GPRS rip-off.

Orange really bug me for the fact they don't warn me when I am getting to the end of my top up reward 100mb of data. I usually run out by the end of the month and did so a couple of days ago... since which they have charged me around £20 for internet usage (for about 10 MB a day over 2 days!)!! It's ridiculous! But THANKs to this site at least I have now realised they should be capping my fee at £2 a day. I called them today (India - which I don't mind except for the fact they are sooooo quiet I can barely hear them)... and after about 20 mins on the phone I finally got them to investigate it and hopefully they will correct it shortly. The man on the phone initially denied they should cap it at £2 a day until I pointed him to the website which says it IS CAPPED. Rar! The staff should know the tarriffs a little better I think. I think I shall have a look at Vodaphone and O2 for an alternative tariff as I need to buy a new phone shortly anyway.

Yes I too have been caught out, I opted for the free internet also with dolphin and topped up a tenner and before the week was out my tenner was gone, wondering where the hell did it go. So I came across this blog and my suspicions have been confirmed. They are the sneaky little rats, putting it nicely. Taking advantage of what the great majority of the public would believe would be to any website is a complaint that I will send to Orange and perhaps trading standards for them to be clearer in their advertising! I am not happy at all with them at all.

Disgrunted and disgusted - 17-Oct-11 17:39

Ok there seems a lot of negative comments here i cannot argue but i have been running HTC on Dolphin for a few months. I followed their instructions and apart from not using UK call centres they have been fine. I do agree however you need an interpreter to understand the plethora of gibberish they put out. Plain and simple wins the day come on Orange.

@Frodo re:"I've met far worse companies than Orange."
That has got to be the most pathetic justification for mediocrity ever. Is that why Orange has such an abysmal Customer Service rating?:

Why doesn't Orange aim to be the best, rather than just better than the dregs?!?

Jimbo - 18-Jun-11 17:37

The jobsworths at the Advertising Standards Authority have just taken over regulation of interweb advertising:

http://www.regentinternet.co.uk/blog/2011/03/09/website-regulation-hits-the-uk-via-the-asa/

I'm sure they'll be as much use as any of the other public sector regulators in doing their job. Still, if Orange get forced to clarify their shop window offers, it can only be a good thing. Don't hold your breath though.

vodafone do almost the same deal except its 500mb of data. So when is orange going to upgrade the dolphin package to be the same or better?

Erk, bought htc on orange payg dolphin today, turned the phone on and looking around the settings trying to find how to connect to wifi, saw that the home screen had located me, the date and weather etc, 15 minutes later got a text to tell me my £10 credit was now 43p and I needed to top up again .... argh. I have since added more credit and turned off both g3 and wifi in the hope that there is enough credit to even receive my 'rewards' of internet and texts... we'll see :(

Total ripoff - checked today and its 100Mb in a 30day period and if you go over its a max of £2 per day. So your £10 is likely to last you all of 5 days. Come on Orange Dolphin is missleading and out of touch with what customers want - I'm off bye.

Most will realise anyway but just so everyone knows I work for Orange. Apologies to An Orange Pay As You Go Customer for the troubles you had trying to verify your scepticisms. I'll keep this short; a top-up of at least £10 will allow 100mb use once the validation text is received by your phone (up to 72 hours) provided at least 10p of your qualifying top-up remains. This allowance can be used for any internet service your phone is capable of using on any website or server and is valid for up to 30 days.

I've met far worse companies than Orange. The Rio sucks and some of the call centres are in India, but fudge it, I heart Orange Wednesdays!!

Yes what a rip off, orange. calls are not cheap text’s are not cheap and even if the internet was free as they say, the daily limit is 25mb and 100mb per month, that’s not unlimited its awful. I spent £40 on this plan for over a month and hardly called anyone I only sent about 10 texts but used Google to read text (browser “set not to display images” speeds loading and you use less internet) every day. What a joke. I have been well and truly ripped off. Well I will be going back to my ASDA mobile, don’t laugh I think it’s the cheapest mobile service around and because it runs on the vodaphone network the signal is always good, PAYG, 8p a min calls any network anytime, 4p per txt, and internet is almost free “if they do charge for it I haven’t noticed”, I can run it for a whole month on one £10 top up, moderate calling / using internet every day until phone bat is dead.
