Why is Firefox better browser than Internet Explorer?

Is it?  Well I don't think so, but thats just my opinion!  These things are really best left with those that like to tinker, or people that plain just don't like Microsoft.  I sometimes get fed up with Windows and Internet Explorer as well, but I stick with them and here is why.

I have been a developer for many years working on a range of platforms and technologies from mainframes to web sites.  This is very relevant because it means I know a geek when I see one.  After all, I brush shoulders with them every day in my job and I guess there are those that would say I am one too.  Am I offended to be pigeonholed like this?  No, I certainly am not and I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to explore and find out how things work.

However, the point I am trying to make is that geek software isn't for everybody and that should be respected.  Open source is a great concept but not everyone wants to modify the software they use.  Microsoft tools are popular simply because they work (most of the time) and most people would find them intuitively easy to use.  It is very likely that this isn't a black and white situation. The more likely scenario is shades of grey with the pure boffins at one end of the spectrum and the technophobes at the other.  Whilst I am more than capable of getting a piece of software to work, tweaking it here and there and solving the problems that arise getting things up and running I fully understand that not everyone is prepared to do this.  The average joe public doesn't want to get involved in this kind of thing.  They want to open a box, install the software and for it to do the job they expect it to, safely, with the minimum of fuss and at a reasonable price.

Microsoft Windows XP I have diverged slightly here.  Linux, Firefox, Opera, Star Office and I guess Apple computers are all alternatives to Microsoft products.  There's nothing wrong with that.  Healthy competition is good and everyone should have a choice.  I have in fact used Opera the web browser in the past myself.  What I do find distasteful however are those people that slate Microsoft just because of who they are and how big they have become.  They harp on about security vulnerabilities, which are most likely highlighted so quickly because so many people use Windows and Internet Explorer.

The person in the street isn't dumb and they'll vote with their feet so to speak so lets accept it.  Who knows, maybe one day well all be using a mac running Lin-OS and browsing the web with err  Netscape twelve or something.

I love Firefox for the add-ons, but they upgrade too often, and the add-ons don't always work withthe new releases. It drives me mad when I have to downgrade again.

The Ups and Downs of Firefox - 16-Jul-11 09:02

Personally I dislike IE. It seems to have ridden on the back of its name for far too long. I write websites in hard-code, and I always have compatibility issues with IE. Another area of my work is made so much more efficient by various Firefox addons (one of which allows you to render a site in IE); an area IE seems to completely disregard. It's just not user-friendly anymore, yet they're so far up their own back door they just don't seem interested in improving.

What I found with firefox is that is constantly fails and gives an error message such as 'oops we had a problem do you wish to restart or start a new session', eventually I went back to Explorer and all is well again.

Use whatever floats your boat. In fact if you install as many different browsers as possible, then you can use a different one every day, my favourite is FF without a doubt, my least favourite is Safari.

I've been using microsoft IE 7 for a long time, and I have a fairly slow windows XP computer. Nothing would load correctly, I thought it was just my computer and the slow connection, but it wasn't. Blogs would half load, an windows browser couldn't even handle hotmail!

I'm not brilliant with computers, but I know trouble when I see it. I have been using firefox on my mac and decided to try it out on windows, and I have a lot less problems, everything seems to run a lot more smoothly for me.

I may give chrome a go, but for me there was enough difference between IE and FF.

I don't see the problem with any. with the big huge hard drives out now it is plain simple to put any browser on your drive, why not just install as many as you like, its not going to kill your fat terabytes by having a few browser. you get feed up with one try the other out, I have at lest 3 to 4 on my desktop, chrome, Firefox, ie8, Mozilla developer tryouts, when the browser become slow you need to clean out the temp files which you find in options, you can also Tye c cleaner or web roots window washer, to me there is no best browser I think more of the search engine being good or no so good.

Hi thank you for a straight forward... though perhaps somewhat lengthy (but I enjoyed the read!) answer... in plain english/american which made sense and nice to know a computer boffin appreciates us lesser minions when it comes to understanding something that is perhaps fairly simple... hey and I learnt that IE stands for internet explorer!!!! Another blond moment for me

Any person that uses IE6 for anything other than a backup browser (for Windows Update) should be taken away and shot. If you won't install a real browser, at least upgrade to 7 or 8.

It drives me completely nuts that some designers of web pages insist on the use of Internet Explorer, especially Public Services, Utilities and Banks.

Did Billy "Micro-softy" Gaettes slip them a backhander?

I must admit I use Google Chrome now. I used to use Firefox too, and IE. Sticking with Chrome now because it's strets ahead. Very, very fast. If you haven't tried Chrome then you should.

The trouble with Firefox is that for many Web applications the developers have made many of their programs IE dependent. Stupid idiots.

Has anyone tried the new IE8? I'm told it's a huge improvement on v7.

Mr U - 23-Mar-09 16:11

I installed Windows Vista (a genuine copy) on my PC and used it for a while.

That PC has started playing up and so I installed Vista on my laptop as a dual boot system.

After trying to validate it, Microsoft keeps saying that it is not a genuine copy and that the licence is already in use.

It was in use on my other PC but that is no longer in use and been wiped so why cannot Microsoft determine it hasn’t been in use and therefore is not installed for concurrent use on two computers.

There is a charge of something like £46 to sort this out and so Microsoft can

F***OFF

for making me a victim of its inferiority and greed. I am not doing anything wrong and don’t want to be held to ransom.

Firefox is definitely better than Internet Explorer and it is for free.
Check out all the advantages Firefox has to offer you and you can even download it for free by clicking on the link/button at the bottom of the page at :
http://my-internet-tips-and-tricks.blogspot.com/2008/03/why-use-firefox.html

You can download it and use Internet Explorer and Firefox side by side till you are sure of yourself.

both Mac and Windose Suck. seriously, Linux everything works, no issues, and if Macs just work, why is there a website called macfixit.com?

I use Firefox under Gutsy Gibbon, and to be honest I haven't looked back to windose since, it is so unstable by comparison as are macs come to think of it. infact I think I hate Mac's more. (having owned both)

I'll never pay for an OS again.

A vendor's market leadership and dominance attracts more 3rd party developers to produce products for that vendor's eco system - because they can sell into that makret. Mass market can result in lower consumer costs, shipping more units of your own product and potentially more profit.

And so the vicious circle begins. Being #1 is everything. Not many people remember #2 and definitely not #3.

Linux , openoffice, firefox, opera - all good.
