In view of the recent suggestion that I should have a point on my licence for dropping litter from my car window, which I agree is anti social and something that I would never condone, why is it that a blind eye is turned to the mountains of horse manure that is dropped (usually outside my drive) every day on our roads?

We are expected to slow down, give a wide berth and generally give way to these creatures and there riders, which strangely enough are usually always women (what is it with women and horses?). If we do not (and I usually do by the way), you can fully expect to incur the wrath of the rider and the horse because they both give you a filthy look for not perceiving that they were around the next blind bend in the road.

Anyway, I've carefully made my way home only to find right outside my drive is yet another pile of horse manure which I will have to move before someone walks it onto the hall carpet - this of course would obviously be my fault!

I have suggested to one or two of these riders that they should perhaps carry a shovel and a bag to collect the horse manure and take it back to the stables with them. But this is a apparently too daft an idea to contemplate because once out of the saddle they cant get back on without assistance, and besides they are not charging me for the manure so I really should be grateful.

Horse manure on the road

Still, I suppose they don't have many horses in Downing street nowadays, so they're unlikely to really appreciate a horse manure problem are they?  Would anyone care to buy some some horse manure?  I've got plenty here and will probably receive yet another load tomorrow!

Ah, how times have changed! When I was young the greengrocer and coalman came round with a horsedrawn cart. People would be looking out for a fresh deposit and it would be cleared up almost immediately to help the roses grow. Having said that, I would not now want this to happen regularly outside my own house, so I do sympathise.

I have horses myself and despite walking around their poo-filled stables and paddocks on a regular basis I never tread straight through the piles of muck. if this guy has a serious problem not noticing a big pile of poo near his driveway until hes trodden in it maybe it should be questioned whether his eyesights safe enough for him to leave the house.loser.

Daphne : there is a huge difference between dog poo and horse poo, in terms of biological make-up and harm to human beings. Horses are herbivores, therefore the parasites they carry in their faeces are harmless to humans, whereas dogs and cats, being carnivores, carry parasites in their faeces which are very definitely extremely harmful to humans. So that is one reason why we have to pick up after our dogs. Another is because again, because they are primarily carnivores, their faeces is much more greasy or sticky than horse, so therefore far more unpleasant to walk in. Again, due to the nature of dog faeces, it hangs around on the pavement far longer than horse faeces, horse faeces washes away very quickly, dog faeces does not. I would thank the horse for his deposit if I were you and happily scoop it up and put it on your roses, who will also bless the horse for his delicious free fertiliser!

I myself dont have a problem with horses or riders ect, however I have the same problem, every Sunday morning someone rides there horse through the village I live in and it always somehow manages to have to relieve its self right outside my house! I live very close to the road so this is normally half on the road half on the pavement. Was this someone letting there dog do this there would be absolute uproar but why do we seem to think its ok for horse's????

Bolt a road tax disc to the horse and then we can afford the local councils to chase after horse and pick up poop!

I reckon the author of this gripe must be retired or unemployed, definitely needs to get a life or a hobby, why doesnt he spend his valuable time inventing a horse poo collecting device a rider can attach to the horse, so when the horse poos, it is collected and deposited in a doggy dooper bag....mmmm got me thinking, I think I will develop a device and market it and become mega rich, great, i'm off to see the Dragons........

Dobbo !! Wash your mouth out with soap and water !! How could you blaspheme so ... not keen on horses ... eeek !!

You don't know what you are missing. Until you have kissed your horse's velvet-soft muzzle and been tickled by his whiskers whilst inhaling the sweet smell of his hay-scented breath, you haven't lived my friend !!

Thanks for your support about the "mountains of manure" ... much appreciated!

I'm not keen on horses but 'mountains of manure'. Get a grip.

What is so dreadful about horse manure? It's just recycled grass. It's hardly a hazard. Quite why you'd be unable to avoid stepping in it is beyond me. And as for slowing down for horses, it is for your own benefit as well as theirs – unless you'd like half a ton of equine through your windscreen.

Considering most of civilisation was built on the back of the horse one way or another, I don't really see why you can't have some tolerance.

We're all waiting Len ... with bated breath !!

And waiting ....
and waiting ...

Have you any ideas about women and horses, Len? Or were you just making an attempt to be amusing ... in which case, I think you may have failed.
