Ryanair check-in surcharges a disgrace

After we had completed the on-line booking for a flight to Mallorca, and proceeded to accept the cost by supplying our card details, we were astonished when the confirmation arrived the following day, and a further £30.00 had been added for paying by card at the rate of £10 per passenger.  This £10 is actually a £5 surcharge for each flight, outbound and inbound.  By all accounts this is for the privilege of printing our own boarding passes since the check-in desks have been scrapped.

However, worse was to follow!

There was a stipulation that boarding passes had to be printed, not when purchasing the air fares, but BETWEEN 15 DAYS before flying, and up to within FOUR HOURS of take-off.  This alone is seems to be a ploy guaranteed to net in more covert charges to the unwary - or in my case forgetful/naive as to this crucial 'procedure'.  On arrival at the Ryanair check-in area, we had to confirm our details on one of those dreaded computerised machines, to discover that we three had to pay an extra charge of £120 because we had omitted to print our booking passes within the required time slot.

Boarding a Ryanair plane BE WARNED!  Make sure you print your boarding passes or you'll be subject to these extortionate charges!

While Ryanair simply respond by asserting that their covert charges are "not illegal", if it takes legislation to make ANY business more transparent and honestly run, then this must be done.  We already have a government who knows how to implement severe penalties upon their electorate who fail to toe the line in many aspects of daily life, so it can only be a well-practised procedure that needs applying to business as well.

When you say 'online booking', do you mean online check-in? If so, just have your wife log on to the Ryanair website and reprint the boarding pass at her end.

So according to you, people that are able to read and follow simple instructions are thick. What does that make the people that aren't?

How does it look that way when on this page alone, there are 5 posters defending Ryanair?

99% of complaints are from people that don't bother to follow a few basic rules and then refuse to take responsibility for it.

"Am I the only one to defend Ryanair?"
It does look that way, and usually the person in the minority is wrong. Sooner or later if you carry on flying with them you will have a bad experience and change our tune. Then you'll see their true colours, until then you will remain blissfully ignorant of their devious and underhand way of doing business.

Am I the only one to defend Ryanair? At every stage of booking you are shown clearly what you are paying for. You are also made aware of the need to print off boarding cards. If you are capable of travelling by air you are capable of following Ryanair.s requirements. Ask me if I agree with the charges is another matter but clarity is not one of the issues

To put it nicely, that is a grossly misleading claim. I find the booking fee high as well but it is not suddenly added AFTER you've completed the booking. When you choose your payment method, the cost of paying with that method will be displayed.

"A family of four booking a ticket on some low-cost airlines have to incur a £40 fee with many airlines when paying by credit card.

Which?, the consumer watchdog, has launched a so-called Super Complaint against credit card surcharges. A Super Complaint, which only a small number of bodies are allowed to issue, ensures that the Office of Fair Trading conducts a preliminary investigation, with the option to undertake a full-scale review.

The cost to the airline would be around 20 pence to process a debit card payment and no more than 2 per cent of the transaction value for a credit card, it claimed. While Ryanair charges a family of four £40, the same family would be charged £38 by Flybe and £5.50 by easyJet. "

"I have just had to pay £80 extra for two of us going out to Sardinia cause I never read the print out properly. They never sent me a reminder by email like Easyjet does."

That's not true. Shortly before your departure date you get an email with the subject:
"IMPORTANT: YOU NEED TO CHECK-IN ONLINE FOR YOUR FLIGHT NOW"

Also, the subject of your booking confirmation reads:
"Ryanair Travel Itinerary - Don't Forget You MUST Check-in Online and Print Off your Boarding Pass"

You mean that site where people complain about their own inability to follow simple guidelines?

Ryanair is for penny-pinchers whose time is worthless and who can spend hours reading through all the trciks to get to a bargain. The first and last time I used Ryanair, I was badly disappointed and knew it wouldn't last. And it won't last. It sucks.

Ryanair is brilliant, all you have to do is READ the conditions and if you stick to them you will get what you paid for. If you want all the extras, FREE food, FREE drinks etc then simply pay for them by buying a much more expensive ticket with an airline that 'gives' these things for a high priced ticket. Your money, your choice.

During December 2009 my daughter and her fiancé booked, paid for and had confirmed their flights from East Midlands to Bergerac for the beginning of June 2010 with the O'Leary bus service. In the middle of January they received an email to say that sorry the service from East Midlands to Bergerac is no longer viable and so their booking has been cancelled; they can APPLY for a refund. I wonder if they will get all their money back or whether that rascal will keep the credit card charges?

been flying with Ryanair between France and the UK for years, if you read all the bumff carefully its not a problem, no matter what, there prices are still the cheapest around and have saved our family thousands over the years.MoL cops a lot of flak but his company is still making a profit, its more than a lot of others so he must be doing something right.!!

I flew from Bristol to Belfast with Ryanair last week. I knew I had to check in online and print the boarding passes off before the flight because it mentions it all over the Ryanair website AND in subsequent emails. So the day before the flight I print off the boarding passes at work because I haven't got my own printer - but the barcode didn't print off. I thought (stupidly) that all I needed was a reference number to get past security (as I said - 'stupidly'). However something told me to check online to see if the barcode is needed, and it turns out it's pretty important. So I start to freak out.
My flight was at 12 and I live 2 hours away from the airport so I run into work early to try and re-print but no joy. I eventually gave up and just thought I'd chance it. So, I got to security and lo and behold they don't accept it. I plead with them and tell them that I would need to pay £40 to reprint the boarding pass. They tell me I don't need to pay anything, and that I should go to the Ryanair desk and they'll be able to give me a new one at no extra cost.....and guess what? They did. AND they were nice about it.
Don't give them such a hard time folks - they are mean, but they're not THAT mean.

Life gave O'Leary lemons - people don't read small print. He turned it into lemonade - sweet juicy profit. Genius. Slurp!

I've just booked some Ryanair flights and it clearly states during the booking process that you will be charged £40 if you turn up to the airport without your pre-printed boarding pass. Why the hell don't you just read the information they give you? You're not in a position to complain if you haven't bothered to read the info they've clearly supplied to you.
