Noise pollution from car stereos

It really get my goat, when people turn up the volume of the car stereo and open all the windows.  Haven't they ever heard of noise pollution, and do these people imagine that everyone else has the same tastes in music as them, hence the need to broadcast to the public?  Quite apart from not being able to hear anything else around them, such as a horn or siren (surely a safety issue), it's actually very annoying for the rest of us just walking down the streets.  Why do these people feel the need to play their car stereo so loud with the window open?

That familiar thump, thump, thump can usually be heard long before you see the car.  Whilst the car itself may, or may not be sporting tinted windows and an extra wide tail pipe (the usual dress code for such vehicles), it will almost certainly have a baseball cap clad youth in the driver's seat.  This young man tries to appear cool as he gazes around at the passers by through his sunglasses.  He needs to make sure that enough heads have turned and paid adequate homage to the boom box in the depths of his car.  You see It wouldn't do to have spent all your wages on car audio equipment and then get little reaction.

You can barely hear anything over the din

But there's worse to come.  Not satisfied with deafening people on the street, the pumping sound from no doubt expensive car audio can still be heard when sitting in front of the TV.  You've settled down to watch a nature program or to listen to the news and find out what the rest of the world is doing.  What's the point though?  You can barely hear anything over the din.  All you hear is the pervasive thump of music or some rap artist screaming obscenities in your own living room.

Noise pollution from car stereo equipment

Another form of noise pollution is car horns.  Why not get out of the car and ring the door bell?  Oh dear, I forgot.  Why on earth would you want to do that?  Better to be a lazy bum and remain in the car whilst blaring the horn and revving the engine.  How considerate of you!

I play music in my car at some ear melting volumes..... why... because I like loud music,I choose not to do this at home as my neighbours probably couldnt handle hours of drum and bass... at least Im on the move in the car so you may only have to put up for a few seconds.

I agree - lets get some laws in place which enable the police to fine drivers for making excessive noise

Most people are good looking or witty or intelligent or successful and as such will have friends who like their company. I've been told that people who turn up their car sound systems and open the windows, (or drive with all their lights on) have so little going for them personality-wise, that they have to find other ways to get people to take notice of them. When you're that inadequate, any attention is good attention.

Kryton, I fully agree. The persons making the noise are some 100metres away, and my windows still rattle! Our local police are not interested until it's after midnight (if you're lucky). Has no-one a device that can neutralise this noise? Transmit something on a frequency that these players occupy?

I don't understand why it is considered anti-social to inflict your music on people from a car stereo but shops and restaurants can impose music on their customers and if you complain they just say "We like it".

Oh that's simple - the more likely you are to inflict your music on to others in a polluting manner, the worse your taste will be.

Or to put it another way, who is the more likely to blast music from a car?

A professional person or some chavvy little low-life?

Anyone else noticed that the people who inflict their stereos on the public are never listening to Mozart or Beethoven? I wonder why that is...

I am quietly wathcing tv or doing something on my computer when my thick neighbours daughter turns up, Beep beep 20 yards away then parks outside my house gets out leaving the doors open Boom boom boom while she shouts over the noise to her mum for 20 minets or so, leaving the engine runing then revs up the car making loads of noise from over size exhaust, it's some compact car that she is deluding herself is a sports car oh sorry Bling Bling and mum says oh she's young, and there is the problem, if parents wont bring thier kids up to respect others, if I wanted I could play clasical music at several 100 watts but then I wouldn't wish to lower myself.

I love noisy music genres BUT if I wanted to live next door to a nightclub I would have bloody moved next door to one! playing music loud in residential areas is noise pollution.
How would they like it if I sprayed all the trees black or dumped sewerage close by ? it offends our senses it rude and offensive and can only provoke violent reactions.
Local government and councils need to step on this behaviour with a size 10 boot so we can enjoy our peace and quiet after a hard day at work.

What about the idiots whose exhaust pipes are probably worth more that their car, I live in a quiet village and we are plagued with a moron driving up and down exceeding the speed limit of 30miles an hour, you can still here the car long after it has passed through the village, surely this a against the law??????

Here's how to end the noisy boombox plague:
Ask some poor wretch if he'd like to have a ten- or twenty-dollar bill. If his answer is Yes, tell him about your noisy boombox neighbor and then say:
"The money is yours if you can figure out something so I won't have to hear that guy's boombox again. Don't kill him or beat him up. But do whatever you have to do to silence that Hollywoodized lowlife!"
Believe me, this is VERY effective. Heard of the VAB's? They're the "Vigilantes Against Boomboxes." Or you can start your own vigilante group.
Reactions, anyone?

My idea is to fine noisy neighbours or inconsiderate business a set fine each time they make noise. This will give power back to the police and should sort out the problem quickly.
If you agree with my please sign my petition to the prime minister here:
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/NoiseFine/

I know it probably wont make any difference but we have to at least try.

Earlier today I went for a walk around the lanes. It's a rural area and not a lot of traffic, in 2 hours I was probably passed by 30 or 40 cars.

The only thing that spoilt the experience was half a dozen or so pathetic idiots in their undersized and overpowered tin boxes on wheels with booming stereos broadcasting (c)rap 'music' to the neighbourhood.

With one exception, these people were black.
(OK folks, you can start waving the race card now.)

My partner (who is 25, does not have a modified car and is definitely not a ‘yob’) loves to play his music loud in the car but when he winds his windows down or pulls into the street I have to tell him to turn it down or physically do it myself; he sees nothing wrong with it but it drives me crazy! I think it’s very inconsiderate and completely unnecessary, plus it does give the people who hear you a certain impression about the type of person you must be. People revving their engines (motorbikes are the worst offenders in my street) and honking their horns are also a pet hate of mine, they clearly have no respect for others in the area with young children or those wimply wanting to relax in the peace and quiet of their own homes. Completely agree with the post and that more should be done to stop the culprits.

I hate the thump thump booooom boooom boom thump thump booom of car subwoofers! One or two of them is ok, but some people have dedicated the entire back seat area for like 20 10 inch subwoofers. Also, if you turn it up so much, you don't hear a song. You hear BOOOOM BOOOOM WOOOOOOOOOOOM WOOOOOOOOOOM THUMP THUMP WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM BOOOOOOOOM THUMP THUMP BOOOOOOOOOM BWAAAAAAAAAAAAMM BWAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
