VW Golf electrics a complete nightmare

In 1999 I brought a bog standard VW Golf with a 1.4 engine.  I had been driving a Toyota Starlet for several years before with very little trouble with repairs. But after a promotion at work I could afford a nice new car.  Whilst searching for this dream car, my ex partner whom I lived with at the time, advised me to buy a VW.  As my auntie was moving to France and I planned to drive over often for mini breaks to visit her, I would need a reliable strong car to do this.

I finally found my lovely VW Golf and counted down the days until I could collect it.  My best friend had also brought a Golf a few months before and she swore by it.  Best car she had ever driven she boasted!

After owning my car for 4 years there seemed to be problems with the ABS light.  I took it into a VW dealer who fixed the problem saying it was a minor fault with the electrics.  All cars get minor faults, right?

Well after 6 months its started again so I took it back and again VW said minor fault.  It was all fixed and I just put it down to one of those things.  My ex promised me that he has always bought VW and it was nothing to worry about.  I must add that this is the man who kept an old Jetta on my drive that he was constantly repairing.  He also owned a Golf that was just a year older than mine, again as his car got over 3 years old he was constantly repairing it.  He was also in the local VW fan club!!!

VW Golf electrical problems The next thing to go on my car was the oil light.  This time to try and save money I thought I would ask my ex (the VW expert) to fix it as the last 2 repairs has cost me a fortune.  He changed the oil but this didn't stop the light always being on.  So I had to grit my teeth and go back to the main dealer.  Again it was a minor fault and it was repaired at my cost.  A few months later the engine light was flashing and the car was vibrating when I was sitting in traffic.  This time my ex changed the spark plugs and it made no difference.  To his horror I took the car to a private garage where they said it was a fault with the electrics and would cost me silly amounts to put right.  I complained to VW that this was missed and they agreed that as they always service and repair my car, they would try to fix it at a cheaper price.

Six months later I was visiting my friend (who also owned a Golf but used it as a part exchange on a Vauxhall due to the cost to repair her electrics!).  The drive home was through a country lane.  It was late at night and the car decided it would start vibrating again.  The oil light came on and then the engine light.  I pulled over phoned my ex to come and look at it then follow me home.  When he got there and tried to start the damn thing there was no life in it at all; it plain refused to start!  The next day I got another local garage to take a look.  No way was I listening to VW again.  The mechanic was very honest and explained there is a design flaw in VW's above an R reg.  He could fix it but advised me there was no point, I would be back in 6 months for the same repairs again, a year if I was lucky.  My ex insisted this was a good deal.  "Its a VW and they are strong like a bull" he said.  More like weak as a kitten I thought.

I decided to investigate these issues myself and found that many other VW Golf owners had similar, if not the same problem and they were advising against buying the newer model Golf.  My ex of course wouldn't accept this and said that they were probably other car dealers trying to flog their own cars.  By this time he had spent twice the amount I had on his Golf, but wouldn't admit that there was a problem with them.  In the end I sold parts from my car to try to raise the money I had lost in repair charges.

I had to be without a car for some time but I am now the proud owner of a Ford Fiesta which I brought second hand as I'm still paying the loan for my 15k Golf.  My fiesta was new in 1997 and drives me to France and back as well as to work on a daily basis.  On its last MOT it sailed straight through.  I also passed my ex (the VW fan) the other day whilst he was driving his new Vauxhall Astra!  Seems some of us take longer to learn!

27th April 2011 Will not visit Verve VW garage in Wishaw again, after spent £ 420 to replace a motor which powers the passenger side's E windows , door mirror and door locks and just after 4 days the same problem appears and at that time I have discovered that the rubber seal, on the front passenger side door ,was not fix ,all the coloured wires were exposed. Once taken back to Verve to complain ,was told to replace the seal will cost me a further £185. If I knew the cost will exceed £500 , I would gone to other garages. VW made great cars why can their garage be the same.

My 54 golf radio keeps turning itself on when the car is left and locked up. Been doing this for a few months now. However it is getting more frequent and when I did not use my car for two days the radio was on when I went back to the car and I had to call out my VW/RAC breakdown service as the battery was flat. luckily it was Sunday I had nothing urgent on. Now I am worried and keep checking to see if the radio is on and often it is. The VW/RAC mechanic said I needed a new radio cd or a switch or I could keep taking out the radio fuse.

mark 6 tdi 2010 plateHELP! Warning light for oil comes on my dashboard. Safely check manual which informs me to top up the low oil. 1 Litre later the light is still on. Im not an expert, but assume 1 litre will filter through and resolve itself. 2 days later, the lights still on. I guess it needs more oil, so I top it up. Then, smoke comes from the exhaust! AA recovered... the bill is now £1900.00 and I am liable for filling too much oil ? Where can I take this?

Purchased VW Golf SE TDI 1.9 for £17,000. Vehicle '05 regd (5.5 years old) but only done 33,000miles, ESP light on dash. VW dealership diagnosed faulty ABS unit which will cost £1200 to replace. Seems to be common fault which VW are aware of but not willing to offer goodwill even though I've been loyal to the brand, simply due to age of vehicle. ABS unit is non-serviceable part hence should last life of vehicle but VW customer services & dealerships (particularly Lookers Burnley) very unhelpful. Lookers Burnley not returning several calls left & not even responding to complaint letter so will take matter further legally under Sale of Goods Act. Non-existant aftercare service at Lookers Burnley, dealership staff very unpolite & totally clueless about simplest of queries. Certainly wouldn't recommend VW to anyone.

These problems are not confined to older Golfs. I have a nearly new year GTI which has electrical problems and is currently waiting for its fourth visit to the garage. Whilst it is still under warranty VW have tried to suggest that this is not covered! Best advice to any prospective purchasers is don't!

A warning signal appeared when driving my Polo and the engine got very ropey.I managed to get it to my Volkswagen dealer in Stafford. They said they would find the problem and repair it.No courtesy car was available. The cost of the repairs and labour came to over £700's.Just over a month went bye and the same warning signal appeared again and the car was a danger to other road users as it kept stopping and starting in awful locations.I contacted the dealer again but they refused to collect the car and again could not supply a courtesy car'but would repair it if I could get it to them.A bit fed up by this time I contacted another dealer who came out within ten minutes ,took the car off repaired it the same day and returned it to my home a reasonable price.Guess who I will be dealing with next time.

Oh, funny I should come across this today - my W reg VW's rear lights have always been a bit suspect but now they have gone completely along with the reversing lights and one fog light. I was going to take the thing to an electrics expert. Having read this account, I am wondering if it is worth it, given that they are said to be so much more expensive that my notmail repair garage.

Why drive something like an unreliable Golf?

When you can drive a Volvo.

If you get a good VW they are bullet proof. Now that the cars are getting safer, advanced and people are putting technology from area 51 by the trolley load into a single car, things are bound to go wrong.

Some of the newer cars about have up to 10 management systems.

The problem stems with the cost of parts and also being one of the most expensive for labour charges per hour too.

I own a VR6 Golf mark 3. Part of the breather pipework that had perished was going to cost me £159. Then I found out that the Ford Galaxy 2.8 had the same part for........ £16.

So reading between the lines, you changed the oil and spark plugs after four years...these are service items and should have been done well before that if you want a reliable car.
Most modern vehichles have a lot of onboard electronics, few garages including some main dealers understand how to repair/diagnose faults properly so they just replace them hoping it will fix the problem leaving you with a big bill. There are a lot of worse modern cars in that respect.

VWs are sounder than most cars in every respect but nothing mechanical is unbreakable.

"This is why I wouldn't get involved in helping a girl choose a car. ..........and if it breaks down (even four years later for the first time) you will have it thrown in your face."

I helped a female colleague purchase a car, a VW as it happens, and over a year later the stupid cow came to me and told me she was very upset with me and the car was a lousy buy .... why? Because after a year of good service and nearly 20,000 miles it needed two new tyres. I had in fact pointed out when she bought it that the tyres would give her another 10-15k if she were lucky.

Her words to me, which I will never forget, were :"You didn't tell me that the car would need new tyres." My reply was that I also hadn't told her it would need petrol from time to time. She then asked me if I thought she was stupid .... I told her she'd proved it beyond doubt.

This is why I wouldn't get involved in helping a girl choose a car. If it all works faultlessly there is no thanks, and if it breaks down (even four years later for the first time) you will have it thrown in your face. Silly ex for at least trying to help, with absolutely no gratitude!

vw just are masters of taking your money and then cutting you off. I spent a year being fobbed off by the dealer and no help from 'custermer help' and no reply from head office in germany. Buy an Astra or Focus, outperforme a golf in every dept and dont have sensors that go faulty and designed to keep dealers in income. And cheaper in the first place.

:I went to a Plymouth VW dealer. There is only one, and the salesman said he would do a part exchange for a VW polo bluemotion. I said I would pay cash if it was a 2 month delivery they OK'd that. After I paid a deposit they immediatley said I would have to have it next week and they would arrange hp. I protested and they told me to leave the showroom, I contacted them a month later they said I would receive the car. In the middle of the 2nd month 2 days later they phoned and said it had not been ordered and I could have my deposit back. I am now going for another make. (Senseless). I do not know why some consumer body does not pick up on these companies.
