I saw as one of the main Yahoo news headlines yesterday that there is 'uproar' about the new CBeebies presenter Cerrie, who has one arm.  Apparently some parents are having to de-stress and calm down their children who have become upset and confused by a one armed TV presenter.  Hello, it is hardly her fault is it?  And surely she is entitled to a job like anyone else?  Obviously some thickos still think that 'people like that' should be locked away in a basement so society don't have to have their small, pathetic minds challenged.

This is rubbish, the children who have noticed are probably naturally curious, and it is most likely the parents who have the problems about it.  What do you do if your child asks about her?  Simple - tell them she might have been ill or maybe had a bad accident and that sometimes amputations have to happen to save lives, or maybe she was born like it, and that is just one of life's little mysteries.  But don't go all over protective and make out that it is scaring the child.  If they are scared, then tell them to grow up and stop being silly.  If the mock her then be a decent parent and tell them off being rude!

Television panel, on air

I wasn't frightened of things like that when I was young, but maybe that's because my Mum didn't wrap me up in cotton wool and in fact treated me like a little adult, so when I asked questions about that sort of thing I would be given the truth and a realistic explanation.  If I'd have ever laughed at someone with a disability then I got a dressing down big time.  I will do the same with my daughter is such a thing arises.

If Cerrie is still on CBeebies by the time our daughter is old enough to notice her disability and ask questions, then I will give her some straight sensible answers, and not patronise her with oversensitive bullsh*t about Cerrie being 'scary' and not fit for TV.

Please, please to any other parent considering that she she shouldn't be on TV just because she's only got one arm, just grow up and get over your silly, closed attitudes.

Go Cerrie, I hope your career flourishes!!!

This is very old, but I have to do something about this. Cerrie is such a pretty girl, and it teaches the kids something. Life can't always be perfect! They shouldn't be scared, and those parents are just probably rich whiners, and think the rot on Playhouse Disney is better. GET OVER IT, TIGHTWADS!

So what are you trying to tell us all that your kids never see disabled people?
Do you never take them out or do you blindfold them when you do?
It’s not the kids that are frightened?
Its jus that you discriminate against the sick and disabled how pathetic you are.

For those who think Cerrie is intentionally showing her arm off, I put it to you to think about it. Isn;t it because you are looking for these things, not because she is actually doing anything wrong, although I do think promoting diversity and disbabiltiy as nothing unusual will make the world a better place get over yourselves, she is no different from those whom are perfect!

Cerrie is a brilliant tv presenter and my two year old daughter has never commented about her disbility I find it brill that my daughter can see disability and be more concerned about wanting to meet them than what is wrong with them, she will not be put off anybody with disabilities because she can see it daily and others should not mock. Everybody is entitled to work and live life to the fullest they can achieve. Anybody with a problem should address a counsellor for there small minds and take a good look at the world it is full of imperfections all of which make it colourful. It wouldn;t do for us all to be the same! Go Cerrie we love you! xx

Why should she cover it up? My 7 month old daughter has a strawberry birthmark under her eye. I have been told that it will go by the time she is 5. The reactions she gets are the same people either mention it very rudely or decide to ignore it. Many people as why I haven't have treatment to remove it because they say she will get bullied. It would be nice to think that the human race with all its knowledge would accept that the world would be a very boring place if everyone looked the same and that no matter what people look like should be accepted.
How many dogs or cats are there without limbs? Would they be shielding their children from them? No I doubt it very much!
When children are at certain ages they are more accepting of situations and accept what they are told and as a parent it is your job to raise your children with understanding and respect for all people whether they are of a different race country or are disabled.

there is nothing wrong with Cerrie presenting cbeebbies
she is an excellent person who has had pervious sucess as an actress
so if only everyone could just let her get on with her career!
At least she has got an career and not just let it get the better of her.

I do actually miss the other presenters Poy and Andy (I think) nothing against having only 1 arm but she could cover it up a bit and stop flaunting it around all the time!

I fear that rather too many people would prefer it if all those other than 'perfect' individuals were consigned to institutions away from public sight.

It just shows you how ignorant and stupid adults can be and they are put in charge of children!Reminds me of hitlers ideals,Totally shameful, ofcourse. If they were a parent of a disabled child it would be fine or maybe they would feel justified in hiding it away in a dark place.Go for it cerrie and show them that you are a better person with or without the bits we take for granted-there for the grace of god I say. These parents have no brains as their children will find out.

My 4 year old enjoys watching the programmes on CBeebies and also didn't notice Cerrie's arm...I pointed it out to him and he came back with...."That lady has a special arm".....young children don't have pre-concieved ideas about how we should look....if only those ideas carried on into adulthood!

Well done CBeebies!....show the world as it is, full of people from the "real world"!

Parents who make such ridiculous, pointless, cruel comments need to get a life and grow up!

Well..as it happens I have a 2 year old son who hasn't even noticed it and probably won't because he knows no difference... I am only going to be honest here, I don't think she is all that great as a presenter (not that I could do much better) and I don't think having one arm should make any difference... but I think what bothers me is that they seem to exaggerate it and make it more noticeable than what you would do if it was an ordinary length arm...if she would just use her arm like any body else (I mean within reason of course) rather than expolit it more it wouldn't piddle me off. An example... she made a roll with cheese and whereas most people would just take a slice off the board she made a point of resting the WHOLE pack on the shortened arm and took a slice from there... don't know why but it niggled me. I am far from discriminating and my kids haven't even noticed which in my opinion means he doesn't seem to see this as 'abnormal' otherwise he'd ask... and if he did ask I would simply explain that some people have these disabilities and that it doesn't make them any different. I am deaf myself but I don't feel a need to show it more than it naturally shows itself. I also think that unfortunately, if you appear on tv with one arm, a huge spot or a wonky eye...people are going to make comments.. they are going to ask questions and I believe that Cerrie should accept this. If she wants to be on tv and make it big then she will need to learn to 'hack' all the abuse aswell as the 'stardom'... as the world has it, people do have opinions on disabilities and a few comments aren't going to 'change the world' so to speak... noone will be able to stop the comments. Thats just the way people are.

I think every one of these parents should be sent on a course to educate them in diversity. I was disgusted when I heard this story, and if they are bringing up their kids with that mindset, they don't deserve to be parents. In this day and age, we should be embracing such diversity.

Yes, kids will ask questions of what is alien to them, but the parents should do their best to answer such questions, rather than whining. I'm quite fearful of the next generation, who are being brought up to hide indoors, stay away from "bad men" and not look at the one-armed girl. Well done to the BBC for enforcing their diversity policy and good luck to Cerrie
