Bullying is when a person or group Bullying is when a person or group repeatedly tries to harm someone who is weaker.  Sometimes it involves direct attacks such as hitting, name calling, teasing or taunting.  Sometimes it is indirect, such as spreading rumors or trying to make others reject someone.  Forum bullying or cyber bullying has become a widespread issue throughout the Internet.  As a former moderator I've encountered it it's various guises many times.  As one of the powers that be, it was difficult enough dealing with the usual spammers and trolls, but that was nothing compared to having to deal with already established members with high post counts and years of knowing each other in that forum.

The term 'regulars' has gained notoriety over the years on all kinds of forums.  That's where the bullies are easier to spot.  To an outsider or a lurker, it can be a bit intimidating submitting a post as a newbie.  Not knowing all the ins and outs and who knows who, it can be a bit daunting.  The TOS (terms of service) or forum rules usually only serve to favour the regulars and bullies if there is some flaming going on in a particular thread.

To give an example, I posted a complaint on the my3cents consumer site last April regarding issues that I had with my bank, Chase.  After lurking on some of the forums on this site I knew which regulars gave out sound advice and which ones were there just to flame new posters.  So in response to my post I got four comments, three of these were sanctimonious and opinionated.  I posted back somewhat sarcastically with "Thanks for the pontificating, dogmatic, sage, etc. advice!" which resulted in 'full mod status' being put on my user account.  This basically meant from then on my posts had to be reviewed by a panel of administrators before being published.

Anyway, being crippled by the powers that be, I could no longer fight back and watched as regulars were only civil to each and downright nasty to newbies.  The unwritten rules were that the newcomers had to endure these nasty comments without reprisal.  The bullies knew how to get around the censorship and avoided talking with you, or PMing you if you hadn't been 'broken in yet'.  I also became aware a certain amount of favouritism displayed by administrators from the start.  In any particular heated debate with a regular and a newbie, they would side with the regular and I noticed that they even let these people use various nicknames that surely must breach the guidelines.  I can't publish these here for obvious reasons.

Cyber bullying on discussion forums

Well, I can deal with bullies on forums, trolls and the like a lot easier if I didn't have to worry about the forum administrators protecting them!  That's the real issue here.  I get tired of myself and others being dismissed as oversensitive or censored when we fight back against these bullies.  So much for free speech!

"No, he or she is attempting to communicate in a totally degraded and degrading sequence of letters and words vaguely resembling the English language."

The written word, "standard" or otherwise, is the representation of the spoken language. The text style example we are discussing communicates its message because it adequately represents the spoken language. There is nothing in that text that cannot be semantically understood, and the same cannot be said for many messages on the forum which are in more standard forms. There is also nothing whatsoever vague about that message as a whole. But I wouldn't categorise it as an interesting read. Nor would I tell its author to shut up.

I think that your pedantry stems from the fear that viewing this "pollution" will somehow compromise your own language skills, and that these non-standard forms will creep into your own language and you will embarrass or discomfit yourself. But I don't think that is a rational fear, particularly as your grip of the "standard" is hardly tenuous, and you are not obliged to read non-standard messages anyway.

"the author of the message you've used to exemplify your complaint IS communicating in English "

No, he or she is attempting to communicate in a totally degraded and degrading sequence of letters and words vaguely resembling the English language.

""The truth is that a message written that way would be perfectly acceptable to you if it were specifically for your own benefit."

How do you presume to know this?"

I doubt that you would complain about a message such as, "u left ya lites on", for example. Or "u aint put ya binz out. I dun it 4 ya".

"I can perfectly understand the message, and so can you if you try. If you don't want to try, just ignore it."

I do ignore most of this type of trash, but sometimes it annoys me that people care so little for their own language to write this way and have obviously wasted their years at school which were paid for by the rest of us. Also it clutters up the site!

Grumpywoman,

"iv bin on the fone 2 these people....." (trimmed)

Trying not to rake over old ground, the author of the message you've used to exemplify your complaint IS communicating in English and that cannot be denied. I can perfectly understand the message, and so can you if you try. If you don't want to try, just ignore it. The truth is that a message written that way would be perfectly acceptable to you if it were specifically for your own benefit. On the other hand, you would quietly ignore the author of boring, meaningless postings provided the author had adhered to your rules. Would you tell someone giving you directions to shut up because he was not speaking grammatically?

"I don't critcise people for the odd spelling mistake or bit of incorrect punctuation, but stuff like this;"

You've got it wrong again.

Well spotted Smithy! I missed that one.

I don't critcise people for the odd spelling mistake or bit of incorrect punctuation, but stuff like this;

"iv bin on the fone 2 these people 4 3 days now I think I must ov spoke 2 at least 15 different people of which nun ov them cud speak english half of them were proper rude 2 me,a couple of them hung the phone up on me,1 was ment 2 call me back and dident, not 1 of them no how 2 do ther job my last phone call was 2 tell them that I want 2 cancel my contract with them because I think the service is disgusting and the staff I also will not be paying a disconection fee and will never use ther service again..A load of idiots..."

Grumpyoldwoman

The problem with getting petty about spelling and calling something semi-literate rubbish just because a word is spelt incorrectly is that people are prone to do the same to you.

"I am free to continue to critisise and poke fun at the total cr*p that some people think constitutes a comment."

Perhaps you should check how "criticise" is spelt?

I would normally consider it rude to correct someone's English usage but you really do ask for it.
*Smithy  16-Jun-2010 13:38

Posting semi-literate gibberish DOES show disrespect for the other posters on here; it's part of the general "can't be bothered" attitude shown by far too many people these days.

I have no respect whatsoever for anyone who can't be bothered to even try to write their comments properly; if they can't make the effort to write it properly why should I make the effort to read it?

And yes, it is a public forum and I am free to continue to critisise and poke fun at the total cr*p that some people think constitutes a comment. If that is bullying; well they can just go and play on facebook!
