Free WiFi, well it sounds too good to be true doesn't it?  Maybe that's because sometimes it is and I really dislike having to write this gripe because I'm actually a very big fan of Wetherspoon pubs in general.  I've always managed to have one on my doorstep wherever I moved to and their beer festivals are second to none.  However this gripe isn't about beer or food, it's about that somewhat elusive free WiFi they offer.

Thirty minutes of free WiFi via The Cloud network whenever you purchase food or a drink is the deal and what an excellent idea it is too.  Who could resist finishing off a bit of work and checking your email whilst enjoying a nice pint of real ale so hats off to the pub chain for doing this.  The only problem is that it isn't always easy to get hold of the little blue free WiFi cards.  In fact the expression "rocking horse poo" springs to mind.

Some staff in pubs haven't even heard of WiFi let alone free WiFi at the pub they work in!  Many times whilst asking bar staff about them I have been met with blank stares and the usual 'I'll have to go and ask the manager about that..'  For goodness sake someone please send a memo round get the pub managers to bring their staff up to speed.  There's even a sign on the door that says "Free WiFi"

Free wifi with a beer

'I don't think the Internet is working...'

Even if the staff are aware that the pub has free WiFi there is still no guarantee you will actually be able get one of the cards.  The Weatherspoon in the town where I live for example never seems to have any.  In the last two months I've been in there at least half a dozen times, lugging my laptop with me each time only to find that I've brought it along for nothing.  I've even been fobbed off with lame excuses like 'I don't think the Internet is working'.

So here I am in my local again having just been told yet again 'Sorry, I don't think we've got any left' by the barman when I asked about the free WiFi.  He couldn't even be bothered to go and ask the manager, obviously too much trouble.  Fortunately though, I visited a Wetherspoon close to where I used to live and managed to get a handfull of the free WiFi the cards there to take back with me.  Maybe a letter to head office is in order. Anyway, for now it's just good to let off some steam as I sup my pint!

FWIW, most 'Spoons have stopped giving out vouchers and gone for subsidised access instead - sign up, log in, and you're good to go. Now you can get around 90 minutes free before the staff accost you asking if you're going to buy another drink.

Where's my free Wi-Fi? Was in a weatherspoonse in London last week and the didn't have any of those cloud vouchers. Is this offer no longer on?

This 'per adua' character really has his head in the clouds, or should I say stars, with such ignorant uninformed unthinking nonsense.

By the way do you know what "per adua" means? For a start it's "per ardua" you ignoranus.

Ah 'Per Adua Ad Internet' treats us again with his/her wisdom.... just like his/her comments in an earlier posting stating that "we have free roads, pavements and public libraries...in the UK"

It was Nick that had to put you in your place this time.....

A suggestion 'Per Adua Ad Internet' - go to an Internet Cafe and do some more research before putting foot in mouth - Neanderthal style.

pubs have lost 20% of their business because of the smoking ban, crap weather and the fact that the bars are full of a***holes on their mobiles, PDAs and laptops annoying the people who like to go for a quiet drink or two. Of course Spain is the most technologically advanced country in the world isn't it ? second only to Greece.
*Nick  14-Aug-2008 10:23

It's good to see that 95% of the citizenry of this country still lives and thinks in the Dark Ages- Neanderthal thinking. Pubs in this last year have actually lost 20% of their business. By their installing and providing "free" internet some of them could actually recover some of their losses. Indeed if the Post Office had modernised properly, it too might have provided this service instead of turning its shops into third-world bazaars. This country is full of mean small-minded backward thinking freaks. Go abroad you find whole cities with Wi-Fi coverage. Take Zamora in Spain for example

...although sometimes I reckon I'd get served quicker if I ordered my pint online and then waited for a man with a van to turn up and deliver it at the pub door!
*Chris  13-Aug-2008 23:12

I agree with you Betty Swollocks, but I'll put up with the free Wi-Fi users if the pub gives us non-users free beer.
*Edgar  29-Jul-2008 09:25

Just keep your Wi-Fi - Hi-Fi - Lo-Fi at home or at the office and give us all some peace when out enjoying a drink with friends.....

Chances are if you do go into this sort of place with your laptop, you will end up leaving it behind, (accidentally?) and simultaneously lose the private and personal details of 2 million people or perhaps even classified defence details?
*Chris  27-Jul-2008 22:47

Per Adua Ad Internet , you're a really funny person. Free libraries are not free, they are paid for by council tax as is everything else that appears "free" in this country, it is all paid for by taxes. If a pub or restaurant gives you "free" wi-fi it will make the money back on more expensive beer or food. As for having somewhere to plug in your laptop. I presume you mean to charge the batteries. Why not take your own 4-way extension lead and charge all of your gadgets at the same time Ipod, Mobile phone etc. Why not ask them to install a shower as well then you could live there all for the price of a pint a day
*Nick  27-Jul-2008 22:00

'Per Adua Ad Internet' - do you live and work in the UK ?. If the answer is yes then you must understand that roads, pavements, public libraries etc are sadly not 'free' as you suggest. The likes of you & me pay for these public services through paying taxes.

Spending money on wars is most probably getting into another gripe subject - but I would say that if you are a British citizen then be very grateful that we do spend money on protecting your freedom by eliminating evil through fighting wars. Ever heard of Adolf Hitler...? Thank goodness we didn't spend money on Wi-Fi rather than serious hardware and guts to defend our country from the nazis... 'Dear Adolf, I'm sending you this email to ask that you stop killing inocent minorities right now - or else my firewall will block all your future emails...... I don't think so.
It would appear that you may well be one citizen who needs to check up on some basic history and culture.
