This gripe is probably going to annoy a lot of people but it's got to be done!  Football (especially in England) really gets on my nerves and because it's everywhere, all the time, you just can't get away from it.

It's entertaining is it?  Well where exactly is this entertainment value because there are so few entertaining games these days.  The accumulation of points/goals is often infrequent or non-existent! Then there's the money paid to footballers who contribute so little to society. It's appalling and although SOME soccer players give money to charity, the majority do not.  By the way, you just have to fart near an opposing player and he goes down, very manly, very butch, VERY LAME and definitely not entertaining.

Doesn't the presence of so many foreign players/managers/owners who have to be the ones to take the English teams to finals bother you?  It doesn't seem to bother the press.  What about the average English fan?  Where's your pride man?  Please don't tell me its wonderful to have them here showing off their skills because that's just a load of nonsense!

Why bother interviewing managers and players?  The foreign ones can barely string a sentence together and don't add much value/insight and I suppose the same could be said for the local ones too.  Martin O' Neil is perhaps an exception.  Nobody offers anything of value, state the obvious, mundane old cliches.  I appreciate you cant give away team plans and tactics but Sky/BBC, why do you put microphones anywhere near these people?  Do fans hang on Benitez's every word?

A gripe about soccer, football players, fans, managers and teams

Is it me or do managers (and sometimes players) far too frequently accuse the referee of being biased against them (their team, specific players) in sometimes subtle and sometimes not so subtle ways?  Aren't these accusations extremely unprofessional and childish?  Whilst I appreciate football is big business (and maybe that's the root of the problem), why do opposing managers never compliment the other side?  It's always about how poor their team did, the referee, the surface, the groundsman, the opposing fans or whatever else that they can find to whinge about.

The childish mind games between managers and players is equally embarrassing.  I accept that sometimes, the press hype these things up but its playground stuff man.  A says B is a diver, B has a hissy fit and says A is just plain nasty and mustn't be so horrible.

Why do so many fans view their teams success as a personal reflection on themselves?  Is it because they are such sad, useless members of society who have failed their families, friends and themselves that they project a teams success (or lack of) onto themselves?  Have you read all the childish jibes fans throw at each other 'Our teem r goin' to win da leeg cos yor manager sux.  Tee hee'.  Have you heard the quality of the feedback from the stands (see Lee Evans - Wired and Wonderful)?  Nice, especially when you have taken your family out to the footy for the day.

People often have a go at rugby for being a toff sport when its not really about class/money is it?  You have togs and a leather ball, just like soccer.  Perhaps the basic rules are too complicated for most people whereas any old chav can understand soccer rules.  Go through the above list and see how much applies to rugby.  Even if one or two points were also applicable - relative to soccer?

I recommend we dismantle all football stadium and donate the building material to 3rd world countries, draft the soccer players into military school/camp and beat some sense into them, confiscate their wages and channel this money into training British tennis players and athletes.

Im not a footie fan, hated it ever since my dad tried to force me in to liking it, personnaly I never saw the attraction of watching it, playing is good for a laugh with your mates, but sitting there watching 22 guys kick a ball around, falling over when some1 comes with a few feet of them. I mean come on where is the excitement in that. They are so over paid its not funny,we work our ass off in dead end jobs for pants pay while they kick a ball around for 90 minutes and earn twice as much even if they dont perform well. that and take some supports for example, rangers and celtic hate each other, so much to the point some rangers fans refuse to have plants in their home because its green! thats no lie, I actually know people like that. We complain our teams dont do well, thats because all the places in the top teams are taken up by players from abroad.so our own boys dont get the match experican or the chance to play top football all season. take other sports for example you only get near the money players make if you win everything. case in point, paintball,(yes its suprisingly enough is a sport wiki it) you play pro paintball the only money you make comes from the job you have and any tournments you win. there is only 1 paintballler on the planet who is payed to play, thats because he has spent so much money getting to where he is and staying there, he needed to be paid. As for being on tv, I dont agree it should have its own devoted channel. but just show the game and leave it there. you spend more time watching 4 men sit around talking about football than you do watching the game, theres no sense it that for my point of view.

To Peter A:
You can't be a fan of something if you're not near it??? Not that its any relevance who I support, but my favourite team is on the other end of the country from me. Its been my favourite since childhood and I get to whatever game I can. I like the team, its players, and its history. Just because I can't throw a stone and hit its grounds doesn't make me like it any less. Heck, I am more of a fan then some lucky enough to live near by!

And to the griper:
I am a fan of the sport in general and can't see myself living or dying by the team. I enjoy it and realize that some others don't. I wouldn't want to watch my wife quilting for three hours, just as she doesn't watch my footie. Balance, my friend. Take up a hobby or get outside while the footie is on - it will save you from caring its even on tele.

The Premier League is crap, but the lower leagues are much better, for example the Championship, Stoke and Hull promoted. The lower leagues is where the real fans are, players are not on that much money compared to those of the premier league, barely enough to pay a mortgage. As for the managers well I can only agree with the gripe. The team is on a 5 game winless streak then the manager is under pressure, and often saked as a result. I like the childish vibes, these I consider banter between 2 sets of fans is fine if they are prepared to face the actions. If people want to pay money to watch their local team or whoever then they can do so, but if they go week after week and moan because the squad is not good enough then they can only blame themselves. Also I don't like it how some one 200+ miles away from the home ground can have a deep attachment to the Club, and not know any players, that is plain rubbish.

As for the money involved you can't blame the players who earn massive wages, this is football in generals fault, the need to do better than one club so they offer massive wages to get the best asset for the club. I for one and I bet many of you would not complain earning 8K a week, we complain because we are jealous, this we need to get over and accept.

Foreign players do serve a purpose in the game mainly in the Premier League, but in the lower English league's there are less. The teams in the Premier League want to get the best players and if the best player for the required position is foreign they will buy them.

Nobby, yes I suppose my comment was clumsily worded. If football is your interest then I guess you shouldn't have to pay any more for it than others pay to watch what pleases them. What I should have said if I'd thought it through is that there should be channels devoted only to sport so that those of us who are actively disinterested in all sport, don't have to suffer it.

Seeing as you mentioned crappy reality programmes and suchlike, I'd even rather watch sport than some of those, so you have a good point there.

MikeP, why should I have to pay to watch a bit of football on the telly ?. I pay for a TV licence every year which entitles me to watch all the FTA channels. I don't think it's too much to ask for a couple of hours a week, especially when we are bombarded with cheaply made reality shows, Striclty dancing !!! etc. and that crap talent show every night with those very talented lovely geordie boys Bloody Ant and Dec.

I actually feel sorry for those that pay their wages. How many times have supporters walked away miserable and disappointed from a match. The players walk off the pitch wealthier than before they went on it, no matter what the score.

How can their wages be justified. Surely, some must blush when they open their bank statement(s)?
*Nozzer  02-Jun-2008 14:05

Why can't sport be restricted to those who choose to pay for the sports channels and kept off the rest? Who cares about a bunch of sweaty uncouth yobs chasing a ball round a field? I certainly don't.
*MikeP  02-Jun-2008 09:09

I totaly agree with you my friend, I hate football, I pay for a tv licence and what do I get some times, lets see, 6pm = round up of how both teams are doing in the so and so cup, 7pm = the big game start, = 8.45 = kick off, 11pm = game finishes, then 4 hours of presenters talking about said game, and how they could have played it better.

makes you want to scream.......

I like footy and the excitement that goes with it. If you want to go somewhere boring try a nightclub or town centre pub. I've stopped going, last few times I went I either nearly ended up asleep or just did fall asleep. Mostly the people themselves were totally boring, luckily the music was loud enough so you couldn't hear much of what they were saying anyway. Hardly any girls can hold a footy conversation and just want to talk about the really boring dross in life, celebs, their hair, old boyfriends, weight, clothes etc. Just want to scream!

Football has sold its soul!! They all seem to want to make money not play and promote the sport of football. Each season you can name the top 4 clubs that are going to walk away with the title and its getting boring. I say bring in he draft system the Americans have so the other teams have the chance to buy the better players if they can afford it. We need to limit the overseas players in each team and also wage cap the players too. This would even things out. I believe the FA should take tips from rugby. Only the captain can talk to the ref anyone else chats and your binned, thats another good thing stuff the 2 yellows then you walk when your given a yellow your binned for 10 minutes. People who mock the way of rugby I think are just naive we are much better sportsmen, we have more respect for each other and the only place in the country that sells bottle beer which you are allowed to take to pitch side is twickers!!! I think it comes down to class in the end football was created as a game called Mob football and it doesn't seem to have changed.
