Why I don't like eBay and PayPal

What in the world is eBay playing at.  They've introduced a new policy whereby buyers are unable to give sellers negative or neutral feedback.  Who's crazy idea was that and what's the point in having a feedback system at all if you can't leave 'honest' feedback.  It's simply ridiculous.  eBay is gradually turning into one big farce as far as I can see.

If I'm selling an item and the buyer takes two weeks to pay for it, I'm hardly going to want to leave them glowing feedback now am I?  The cited reason for this change is so that buyers can leave honest feedback without fear of recrimination from sellers.  But what about protecting the sellers?  Nobody gives a stuff if we get mucked around by buyers anymore.

I basically don't like using PayPal, partly because it's linked to eBay...

PayPal, now that's another part of this gripe.  I basically don't like using PayPal (security issues aside), partly because it's linked to eBay and we've already established my feelings about eBay and partly because of the rip-off fees already discussed in another gripe.  By the way, I just had to pay for an item using PayPal and found that it was down.

Paying by PayPal The latest change in their policies mean that I have no choice but to include PayPal as a payment method in my auctions.  Well I don't want buyers to use PayPal when I'm selling something.  So what if cheques and PO's etc. are slower, at least I'm not feeding eBay more money.  I'd quite happily offer Google Checkout, but of course that's not allowed is it?

What's that I hear?  If you don't like eBay then don't use it?  Well I wish it were so simple but sadly there isn't really any other viable auction site and for some reason or other the punters flock to eBay.  I really don't know why, but they do.  It's about time there was some serious competition!

I have just had to make two small payments. Both merchants use Paypal, which I don't wish to use. There are alternatives, I called them and said I was not prepared to use Paypal and I was given an address to which to send a cheque. Problem solved, and the more people do this, the sooner Paypal will disappear up its own orifice.

I quite AGREE
AND how about the fact that the Aussie dollar has been WELL above the US dollar for a few weeks but to cash in my US payments I only get .9085 cents!!!! HOWS that work.....I know all Exchanges give you a little less, but by my calculations $1.06 US means they are making .016c in every dollar I exchange BIT DAMN RUDE!!! I should be getting at LEAST $1.01 or really $1.04
SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS, but what choice, otherwise they hold my money and are accumulating interest. WIN WIN for Paypal

I`m a new seller on ebay, and I`ve noticed that very large companies and corporate distributors are using it as a shop front, selling their goods at just a few pence more than the wholesale price. For example, Buy.com who`s CEO is from Ingram Micro have just about every Ingram Micro product for sale on Ebay at just over the wholesale price. It makes a small time sole trader work really hard for sod all because of the high fees. I sold a CPU on $bay for £117, so minus £4+ for final sell price, and then another £4+ for paypal fees, add on top the insertion fees etc, I eventually got £105 for the processor. It cost me £111 from the wholesalers, and I sold it at 50pence lower than Buy.com. I think very large companies should be banned from auction sites, because they are just one big Walmart or Tesco, out to cripple the small business.

PayPal is experiencing a backlash at the moment since they where (pressured?) into not processing donations to WikiLeaks. Twitter is buzzing with supporters closing their PayPal accounts in protest at this.

I bought a drawing on Ebay using the Buy It Now option. I was looking forward to receiving it. Next day I received an email from the seller stating that the item is not available. I got a full refund. I was annoyed and puzzled as to why the item was not available. I emailed the seller asking for an explanation. I received no response. I sent several emails and they too were ignored. I contacted ebay but received no response there either. I decided I will have no choice but leave negative feedback. The day after feedback I got an abusive email from pieta_fine_art a power seller on ebay, saying that the picture was unavailable because it had allready been sold. A few weeks later I noticed another item I liked being sold by the same seller. When I checked their feedback it was 100 per cent. This is proof that the feedback system is rubbish and meaningless. Ebay favours those who earn the most money,

I stumbled across this site whilst looking for ebay alternatives. The usual culprits are there, Amazon and Gumtree etc., but there are a few that you might not have heard about.

Alternatives to ebay - 7-Nov-10 18:01

I am a student. I need to make some extra cash to support myself. So I start selling cloths on ebay. I earn about £2-4 per items after paid fee for both ebay and paypal.

I have £155 available balance with Paypal, I need to transfer that to my bank as I have gone red there. Eveytime I try, it shown that my account have already been link with other paypal account (?). I then try using my Saving account. It said that my account have been disable from Paypal as paypal has tried to add and withdraw fund but have been refuse from my bank (HSBC). Paypal then send me first email saying this is a problem between me and my bank please do not contact Paypal. Next message came to my email the next day said that Paypal has charge me £12 for the that.

Until now I have not able to withdraw fund from paypal to my bank, only if I fax then my saving bank statement with the copy of my ID.
But I still can sell and buy stuff through my paypal account and the money is out of my current account right away. How funny that its refuse to reconize my current account when I want to withdraw fund back!?!

Using Paypal is bad enough - if you have problem with Paypal things get rapidly worse. I have had cause to try and complain to them about their verification process (ie VERY slow). Their site doesn't accept e mail unless in standardised form and their telephone is the worst I have come across by a country mile - taking IVR to whole new levels of horror. Took me very frustrating 20 minutes on 0870 number to get through an offshore call centre who couldn't really help!

Rage against the machine - 21-Oct-10 19:02

Yes. I am upset with ebay as well like millions of others. I used to sell on eBay for years and monthly fees were always over £1000. ebay seems to hate the seller for some reason I always provided great service and had 100% feedback with 2 neutral because of 2 buyers, one left neutral because his dog chewed the parcel and the other because he didn't like the "boring" book he chose????

Then the day came when I was to get split big time and have my cherry popped by a big fat........ negative (what else?) This buyer left me a negative because Royal Mail did not deliver the parcel the next day when Recorded 1st Class is NOT a next day service. I posted it 4 hours after he paid and where is my fault?

I rang ebay to complain and it was no use. I was so upset that I closed the shop the same day and posted the rest of the parcels and moved to Amazon. I have never been happier and this was 2 years ago.

Someone needs to do something about this but politicians like their backhanders and they need those payments even more now as they can't rip the public off to pay their second mortgages!

I learn from a friend this auction or group puchase web will offer you no listing and no final value fee for live, what you need just offer rebate amount as low as 0.50 to this network, I got hundred of positve feedback in ebay and the profit margin was so low today, I just can't live with high fees. get a account when they launch and start selling you good with no cost. why I pay attendtion to this shopping web. as I say they offer no listing and final value fee for live. take a look haohaodot.com

My gripe is with Paypal and its so called resolution centre. I sent out an item which did not arrive but obtained proof of posting. The customer would not wait for an immediate refund so he complained to Pay Pal. I forwarded the proof of posting to Pay Pal and also sent in a claim for compensation to the Royal Mail. A few days ago I received a reply from the Royal Mail in which it states that the postcode given is wrong and as a result they cannot deliver goods which have wrong postcodes and have refused compensation. As paypal had originally sided with the buyer I appealed and forwarded the Royal Mail letter. Pay Pal stated they have investigated it further and have still sided with the buyer. It beggers belief that the buyer gave me the wrong shipping details and I have a proof of posting and yet Pay Pal still side with the buyer. What can one do?

Ahmen Ebay will go woolworths way, as the so called customer care people should be standing in the dock answering a charge of mis-representation
