Has anyone been in this situation and if so can you give me some guidance?  Playing in a band might seem like a dream come true but there are also a few problems associated with the music scene that can make life difficult.

My young brother had been playing in a nationally well known band for a couple of years.  About six months ago all the fame went to his head and he fell out with the other guys and left the band.  I'm good friends with the other band members but I could not convince my brother to stay with them.  I play the guitar only as a hobby but pretty well (in fact I taught my brother) and they asked me to sit in with them for rehearsals while they interviewed for a replacement.  At the end of March I was surprised when they asked me to give up my job and join the band full time.

At first playing with this band was like a dream come true, but then things went sour.  It turns out that the other musicians have a group of female followers (about twenty girls) who go to the concerts and take it in turn to sleep with each of the guys.  My brother never breathed a word of this to me.  After our first live gig together the girls drew lots to decide who would go with me as I was 'new'.  I told them that I wasn't interested as I have a girlfriend and we intend to get married next year.

I love playing in a band and I love music

Unfortunately, it didn't end there.  A few weeks later we went back to a hotel after a concert and during the night two of the girls got into my room and I foolishly slept with them.  The next day I was miserable and depressed and hated myself for what I had done.  I love playing in a band and I love music; I also love my girlfriend and have sworn never to be unfaithful to her again, but these groupies are persistent and I've been told that every one of them has sworn to 'have' me.

Playing in a band, groupies make life hell

I'll be honest and say that I'm human and feel that one day I might succumb to temptation again.  But this would only lead to misery and if my girlfriend found out I might lose the love of my life.

What can I do to deal with this situation?

Just, wondered, if, er, hmm, you would have any need for a 50 year old keyboard player?

Your girlfriend is clearly not the love of your life, neither is the band, you just have an enormous............ego lol

Oh puurrrlease...
It must be an uncontrollable impulse you have to sleep with them, you poor thing.
You should just break it off with your girlfriend, she deserves a real man and not a little whiny boy whos balls haven't dropped.

Well, to me, this is simple - grow some balls and say no.

As Noble Ox says James....are you aware of the tale of Walter Mitty...? You are probably not a bad lad but for your own sanity get yourself some top shelf mags and give the old bishop a firm handshake occasionally until you get yourself a real girlfriend. Don't remember reading of any 'nationally well know bands' losing a member only to take on his 'hobby guitarist' brother...!
I can just see it now....mmm how many chords do you know James ?. Three? ah well - we'll teach you the other two and you can join the band for a world tour, earn mega bucks and have all twenty women that follow the band around. Ooh I'm reaching for the tissues myself thinking about that fantasy... You ask for guidance James - surely the record company HR department are there to help with such serious dilemas?.

interesting problem. You can not listen to anyones opinions on this matter and take it on as your own. What is good for you may not be for the next person. This matter is not so black and white as it seems. The grey area is where this groopie lies. Giggle. I say bang the ones that arnt clingy . The only problem I see is STD's . And because of that you should break up with the g/f. duh .

Now you have caused irreparable damage to to your relationship by giving in to a bunch of sex abusers. I find it hard to believe that you didn't know about groupies before you actually joined the band, have you been living locked into a closet up to this point?
Advise: Give up your wedding plans and get laid as often as you possibly can, and don't forget to play a bit of guitar now and then.
One day, you will wake up overwhelmed by regret and hating yourself, drugs no longer helping you to cope.
Go see a shrink who will tell you about your sex addiction, recover, quit the band, get yourself tested for all kinds of veneric diseases, meet a nice girl that you can trust, fall in love for real this time, live happily ever after, dreaming about the good old days.

James - are you familiar with the tale of Walter Mitty...?

Nah, you're making it all up mate, but I'll play ball. Come clean to your girlfriend; do both of you a favour and set her free... she deserves someone with willpower, don't you think? As for you, just take a deep breath, plunge in and enjoy a life of multiple women, which deep down you are obviously longing for. You'll probably want to settle down in 5-10 years, but keep in mind you'll need to retrain yourself for the next serious one and possibly let her know your tally sheet (which won't be too attractive).
