Britain is losing its Britishness

Britain losing its 'Britishness' is a common topic that is much discussed nowadays.  I am from Southern Africa and have lived in the UK for seven years (due to a certain dictator).  While there are numerous cultural and social differences between our 2 societies, I am grateful to be able to live in the UK and contribute to society, although I will never consider myself completely in-sync with what British society is today.

The British people have a right to complain and lament their loss of Britishness (almost all the British people I know/associate with from all walks of society consider this an issue).  Not being British-born, I can't possibly feel the same way those born in Britain do but even so, I find the following situations rather perplexing:

Why does Britain bow and scrape before the 'Mighty Bush'

A boy with a union jack flag
  • why is there this mentality in football that if you want the job done right 'Johnny foreigner' will do it?  How can Arsenal versus Liverpool be considered an English affair, the game has basically been hijacked?
  • why are British businesses being taken over by foreign interests, either when in financial difficulties or because of aggressive foreign takeover policies?
  • why can't Christmas lights depict traditional Christian symbols?
  • why is it okay to have thousands of mosques in the UK, but blasphemy to put a couple of bricks together to build a church in Islamabad?
  • why does the UK not have a national day?
  • why are British music artists trying to copy sad American acts?
  • why does Britain/UK keep sending embarrassing acts to Eurovision?
  • why does Britain bow and scrape before the 'Mighty Bush'?
  • why is Britain having to deal with the consequences of ethnic/cultural vendettas on its streets that primarily do not arise from the direct actions of the British-born folk?

There is a distinct lack of patriotism in this country (some may say with good reason).  You can't even compare with how fiercely patriotic American, Australians, South Africans, Scandinavian countries, and many Eastern-European countries are.  It's a little misguided (and too little to late) when the flags come out for 'big' games or when the Queen is out and about.

Is this country still suffering from a guilt complex from colonialism?  I would like to hear the opinions of British folk who a) feel very strongly about this or b) don't consider this an issue at all.

It's because American sh-t is advertised on TV to kids, and the parents buy the kids whatever the kids see advertised on TV (monkey sees, monkey wants.)
If you want to get back your Britishness, lobby Parlaiment to ban child-targeted ads from the TV.

Britishness....no such word. To DSG, slavery. White slave trading existed long before the black slaving...fact. The only problem being it has never been taught in schools. see:
http://www.revisionisthistory.org/forgottenslaves.html
Why have the true natives of this once proud nation allowed themselves to be pushed and shoved around by the bleeding hearts and the left wing loony political correct liberals, to the extent that we have now lost what was once the English way of life. If anyone goes to the mentioned site, they will see to what extent the people of this country have been misled. Brittishness....no such word....English, YES!

What is Britishness? What does it mean to be a Brit? I think the reason why some people cannot answer is because culture is invisible to the people who live within that culture...just because you cannot directly see culture, does not mean that "British culture" no longer exists. :-)

However, "British culture" like all cultures in the world always change.

Carrot sums it up nicely - a tiny percentage in jobs that the indigenous population could have filled and take aways.

Wow.

And we won't go away.

You still haven't answered the question, incidentally. Nor the one posed by Carrot.

DSG - Doctors, scientists and lecturers are people, immigrant people, so what you are saying is that they brought themselves and some take away.

Only a very small percentage of the approximately 3,000, 000 migrants who entered in the last decade or so are engaged in that kind of work. Anyway, if they were not doing those jobs, then probably someone else would be so that isn’t a “great thing”. They do seem to be helping a little with the shortage of NHS dentists though but there would not have been a shortage if the previous government had not messed up dentists NHS contracts.

Why is excessive security at airports a "great thing" ?

What are the “great things” that migrants have brought to Britain? What fundamental changes for the better has mass immigration brought?

Give me an example of me "harping" about the great things immigrants have brought to this country,iPost. Here are a few examples of what immigrants have brought to this hellhole for your minuscule brain to comprehend:
.More doctors
.More scientists
.More lecturers
.Excessive security at the airport
.Chinese,Indian,Thai food,etc
There! I've given you some examples, now go away, you faceless non-enitity.

Reading this and other similar gripes, it's clear that MikeP doesn't know what racism is. He just throws the term around at anyone who disagrees with him.

DSG is no better either - constantly harping on about the many great things that immigrants have brought to the UK, but is unable to name a single one when challenged.

Spare these two fools any more of your time, fellow posters.

Night Owl : I've lost track of, and interest in, this thread because it's rambled on for so long and i'm not sure who said what as there are postings using my name which I didn't make (as elsewhere), I'm not sure to which of my own comments you are attempting to respond. Feel free to insult me as you wish, as I shall feel free to insult anyone. Or not.

Mike P - I have not posted for a while and missed your reply.

“You have no idea of my nationality”

I didn’t say that I did know. (Do try to pay attention Mike).

“How can I despise 60 million people?”

You would have to answer that question yourself, all I can say is that you do seem to do your best to despise most people, including those you have not yet met. When it comes to your hobby of looking down on people, you seem to be both versatile and dedicated.

"I am fairly certain that no one will miss you."

If you normally behave the way you do on this site , then I imagine that they have fiestas and national days of rejoicing whenever you leave a place.

You have, as usual, picked apart the words but missed the point entirely.

Okay,I admit that last post was unrelated to this gripe, but as you know, there's an agument going on over the definition of "racism". I just though it would be interesting to add that last comment.

DSG, you ask "Will I not be allowed to mention slavery next to a West Indian? Or the colonisation of North America to a Native American? Or possibly the Spanish Inquisition to a Roman Catholic?"

Where did anyone say that you could not do those things?

I have not read any posts that accuse you of racism only of displaying what people think of as very right wing views.

So I guess no-one is allowed to express their true feelings on this site "anon"? You continue to make witty comments at other posters, but God forbid I do the same! Anon, the definition of racist is:"The belief that the genetic factors which constitute race, ethnicity, or nationality are a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that ethnic differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race." MikeP is right about the racism issue, too many people pusssyfoot around these "minorities" in fear of offending them.

""Am I correct to feel a deep sense of unease and some anger when I see a muslim woman in a burka, often accompanied by a husband wearing a trendy t-shirt, jeans and trainers? .......... I certainly do not want to be racist."

Your feelings are more based on anger that men allow themselves all the Western freedoms while apparently wanting their wives freedoms to be limited to those that were allowed in the "old country". That isn't racist.

Mike P, please enlighten us with your definition of racist because you have made some very racist statements on these pages in the past. I would be genuinely interested to know what you consider to be racist.

DSG; why are you insulting Night owl without actually offering an opinion on anything? Insult by all means but at least say why!

You appear to be an over privileged, snotty, spoiled kid with right wing opinions that are far too rigid and lacking in compassion or imagination for a child of your age. Mike P is not by any chance your daddy?

"Am I correct to feel a deep sense of unease and some anger when I see a muslim woman in a burka, often accompanied by a husband wearing a trendy t-shirt, jeans and trainers? .......... I certainly do not want to be racist."

There is nothing whatsoever racist in this. There is also nothing racist in expressing a wish not to mix with, or even a dislike for, people of other nationalities or races. It's a personal opinion we are all entitled to hold, and it won't be long before people will be afraid to say they don't like (e.g.) Indian food for fear of being seen as 'racist'. Unfortunately too many people pusssyfoot (spelt like this to avoid the censorship!) around these matters for fear of being perceived as 'racist' when they really don't know what racism is.

Can I suggest to some of you that you do a little research on racism before you throw the card around.

MikeP - 13-Feb-11 12:33

So, is the influx of over 7,000 Gurkhas and their dependents, together with the potential for many more coming over from Nepal, a contributing factor to Britain losing its Britishness? Is there really an over-riding culture that is in danger of being lost? Shouldn't we conduct an immigration policy on a purely pragmatic basis? If so, shouldn't we be increasing immigration, rather than decreasing? Am I correct to feel a deep sense of unease and some anger when I see a muslim woman in a burka, often accompanied by a husband wearing a trendy t-shirt, jeans and trainers? These are the sort of questions that I find myself asking in relation to this gripe, and - despite my nickname - I can find it very difficult to clearly differentiate between rationalism and what may well be racism. I certainly do not want to be racist.
