Body odour and bad breath, no excuse for it!
My gripe is people who share their unpleasant bodily odours and exhalations with those of us who don't wish to participate. If you've ever been on the tube on a hot day and had to stand squashed up to half a dozen other people you'll probably have run into type of person I'm talking about.
It's a question of respect for oneself
I mean of course people who don't take the trouble to wash themselves or their clothes, or use deodorants or toothpaste. Absolutely disgusting to be honest.
I realise that we all have the right to be dirty slobs if we want to and I exercise this right too, when I am at home on my own or when I go camping or climbing.
But when I am sharing space with others, in offices, public transport or even just walking in the street, I make sure that my personal hygiene cannot be called into question.
It's a question of respect for oneself, as much as for others. I find it quite ironic that we often say that 'so and so suffers from BO (body odour)', whereas in fact it's those around that person that ACTUALLY suffer from the bad smell.
It also often seems to be the case that people who have bad breath are the same ones that come really close to others when they talk!

To combat this, I take several cans of body spray with me to give myself a quick once over from time to time while I'm out.
"I agree with you that body odour and bad breath smell unpleasant. But isn't that a given?"
So why mention it?
"Some people have genuine issues which can cause this,"
Issues? What the hell is an 'issue'? What you mean is that they are dirty.
"If you are lucky enough not to be suffering from BO problems (which everyone does to some extent, though some people just have it worse than others),"
The more you wash the less you'll have BO. And by the way it's not the stinker that suffers, it's those around him or her.
Most people who smell need to pay more attention to their hygiene. There are exceptions and those very few people I feel sorry for, but don't make excuses for people who are too lazy and inconsiderated to use soap and water.
Tube? What's that?

You know the type, you walk past and can cut the air with a knife, and can taste it.
It's easy to blame our fellow man for being overly whiffy and judge them to be insensitive towards others, because its just easy. That is it is a darned sight easier to blame some smelly sod on The Tube for your discomfort, rather than deal with the bigger picture, over which you have far less control.
The problem is having to use the Tube and work in shoddy, unreasonable and quite frankly inhumane buildings in terms of their achitecture and the environment within them. It's these aspects of modern life that are a big contributor to how people smell. If you did something about this, perhaps finding ways of not using the Tube etc, it would cure the problem of being in the proximity of the antisocial and might even improve your outlook on life?
