People who toot their own horn

I work with two tooters that spend most of the day reminding me and anyone who will listen about their special abilities.  It is a virtual symphony of bragging where I work.

Tooter number one, the trumpet, is a want-to-be writer who claims to be a writer at least once per hour.  That means I hear it about 8-20 times per day.  I write this down, by the way, because I want to be a writer too.  This week she is also a knitter, and we are being blasted with yarns about her knitting business.  Listening to her, one would think she knits for royalty.  She has even brought in a huge collection of knitting projects for our glass display case.

Curiously enough, along with the yarn and needles, she has managed to squeeze in a couple examples of her writing as well.  When I told her I was having trouble with tension, she told me since she was a writer, she would write down some things I could do to help me with my knitting.  Actually, I had tension in my head from listening to her toot.

Tooter number two, the saxophone, is working on a masters degree.  According to him this is a huge deal, both financially and time wise.  Though, he mostly toots when the boss is around, since our boss has also mastered this subject.  He forgets that we are all college graduates.  Some of us have enough credits to be doctors or lawyers.  Some of us have spent years raising our children and paying for college, as well as coaching our husbands in their careers, and caring for our aged parents.  All of which are expensive and time consuming.  Oops, I just joined the concert and I'm in the violin.

Reminds me of someone I worked with. The pinned certificates for every single training course they'd ever been on to the wall behind their desk so that it was almost papered with them. How pretentious is that?

What about the employee who keeps Thank-You cards from the last 5 years on their noticeboard for everyone to see, or maybe tehy need them as a reminder to themselves of their own self-worth.

Braggarts are the pits - its my pet hate too and I've had to suffer the "full of himself" boss as well. God I wish the ground would just open up and swallow these idiots that feel the need to blow their own trumpet at every opportunity. Let's start a war!

I don't mind horn tooters when they also recognize other's accomplishments as well. My boss is constantly bragging about how much she has changed the department around but doesn't mention that we did all the work. She brags about work we've done as her own, which everyone hates, and even horn tooted to us what a wonderful, approachable manager she is! I could almost accept the self-praise if she was being honest.

People who toot their own horn are just very insecure. It doesn't matter what your job title is, everyone only sits at the same computers anyway. What matters is the character of the person.

Perhaps they have an identity crisis if they have to confirm their "job title" 20 times per day
