One thing that really gets up my nose is inhaling other peoples' stale cigarette smoke against my will.  It's about time to ban smoking in public places in this country and stamp smoking out once and for all.  You know it makes sense!

Smoking Ban - I came home smelling like a dirty ashtray...

There is nothing worse than coming home from a bar or club after an evening out and finding that your clothes smell disgusting because they have been saturated with stench of smoke.  I'm not the only one who is fed up of this, and I'm not  some born again non-smoker, I just wish that I had a choice whether or not I came home smelling like a dirty ashtray.

Another thing that I really hate is walking down the street behind someone smoking a cigarette.  Every time they exhale out comes that cloud of stale smoke and bang, you walk straight into it and aside from crossing over to the other side of the street there is very little you can do about it.  It is not a pleasant experience and it is one I could live quite happily without.

Ban smoking in public places

I know there are a lot of people in this country that smoke and I'll be willing to bet that some that are reading this article are fed up with people who don't smoke always harping on about their 'bad habit' and telling them what to do.  The simple fact is though that smokers are affecting the health of non-smokers as well as their own. People die each year just because they have breathed other people’s smoke and that is something we really should be taking seriously.  In my opinion an outright ban on smoking in public places is the only way forward.

There seems to be a huge number of web sites on the internet dedicated to stopping smoking or with information about smoking.  Here are a few that I thought might be of interest.

The Net Doctor
This site is very interesting as it contains information on many health issues as well as smoking.  The link above takes you to a page all about smoking and how to quit and it even includes an 'addiction calculator'.  Definately a site worth checking out in my opinion.

Lung Cancer
The facts about lung cancer.  Another page from the Net Doctor site which may be of interest to those who smoke!

Women and Lung Cancer
An interesting site with some pretty dramatic statements regarding lung cancer among women.
Apparently the information is slightly out of date now though because breast cancer has just recently overtaken lung cancer.

Well people are never satisfied. Now they are complianing of people smoking outside and they want the smokers hidden from view? We smokers did smoke inside till we were kicked out? Make up your blooody mind. Pubs are shutting at an alarming rate due to the smoking ban. People are losing there livelyhood. Its alwys been known that smokers spend more money in pubs and clubs NON SMOKERS dont spend as much. They should have had non smoking ares and smoking areas in pubs and clubs and many people may still have there jobs and livelyhoods. There are more things to worry about on this earth than smoking so thats my view.

I think the smoking ban has been one of the only good ideas made by the government and has actually, well in my opinion made a difference. Soon enough people will start to see the positives to the ban of smoking in public places. Okay maybe it can be good for some people, they may be old and smoked since theyve been a teenager and are hooked on them, but some just some because some how its "cool" or its the "in" thing to do. Its a dangerous habit and can cause bad illnesses, people need to be more aware of the dangers.

Well said Rosee, and very nicely put. Congratulations on such a mature outlook for your age, you are more more mature than some of the 'adults' here appear to be, You have put your argument across in a non-confrontational way and I hope even the people who disagree wth you will respect you for that,

in my own opinion I believe that the smoking ban has been the best idea the government have put onto place and kept. im in year 11 and most of my year smoke at school and im fed up with walking into a classroom and smelling the soke from cigarettes smoked by everyone else. it's the same in the street, im walkign through town behind somebody and a waft of smoke comes at me, considering the fact I suffer with asthma, I think that the government should also ban smoking on the streets. to be honest I think the reason behind the incresed number in asthma sufferers are because of second-hand-smoke.

there's no need to smoke, most people I know smoke because of stress, to be "cool" or just out of curiosity. smoking really isn't the way to go.
i've had many troubles with my family that smoke, my mother had suffered with pneumonia in her lungs twice because of smoking (and she was also an asthma sufferer!) but she's given and in the long-run it's made her a lot healthier than she would have been if she had carried on smoking.

Dont make me laugh edd
I reckon you only disagree with that because you have an addiction you cant control.
Anyway I agree cause I am sick of walking down the street or in the local mall and suddenly walking through the middle of some saddo's smoke cloud, and I know I'm not the only one.

In response to 'Ed' - I think the cat-o-nine-tails should be brought back for the use of insulting and louch behaviour - plus a bar a soap to wash your mouth out. YOU are the problem with society as you obviously have a couldn't-care-less attitude towards anyone who thinks or does something you don't agree with. It's about time the majority of the decent public grip the throats of people like you, with your attitude, and toss you onto the nearest muck pile which is where you deserve to reside.

"theres no evidence passive smoking can kill"
There is. Read medical journals. Why do you think so many authorities are banning it, despite the money it loses them in tax revenues?

"you dont like breathing in smoke but your quite happy to pollute the earth with your car?"
Motor vehicles cause far more pollution globally than cigarettes, I am the first to agree with you. Unfortunately they are a necessary evil and nobody has come up with a viable and practical alternative to the internal combustion engine. So we have to live with it. Smoking on the other hand is unnecessary and serves no useful purpose to society or to the individual, it's pure gratification.

"I daresay you want all smokers tagged and rounded up into camps but your too much of a wet wipe to say it"
I hadn't thought this through quite to that extreme but now you say it, it sounds like quite a good idea!

get a pair of bollocks mate, theres no evidence passive smoking can kill and im sick of being persecuted for my habit. you dont like breathing in smoke but your quite happy to pollute the earth with your car?
people like you are the cancer eating away at the heart of this country, 'ban this, ban that, bla bla bla bollocks....' do you know how annoying it is now the smoking bans come in? I cant smoke at work, I cant smoke in the pub, and now you want to ban me from smoking in the street? I daresay you want all smokers tagged and rounded up into camps but your too much of a wet wipe to say it
