Ban smoking in public places

One thing that really gets up my nose is inhaling other peoples' stale cigarette smoke against my will.  It's about time to ban smoking in public places in this country and stamp smoking out once and for all.  You know it makes sense!

There's nothing worse than coming home from a bar or a club smelling like a dirty ashtray

There is nothing worse than coming home from a bar or club after an evening out and finding that your clothes smell disgusting because they have been saturated with stench of smoke.  I'm not the only one who is fed up of this, and I'm not  some born again non-smoker, I just wish that I had a choice whether or not I came home smelling like a dirty ashtray.

Another thing that I really hate is walking down the street behind someone smoking a cigarette.  Every time they exhale out comes that cloud of stale smoke and bang, you walk straight into it and aside from crossing over to the other side of the street there is very little you can do about it.  It is not a pleasant experience and it is one I could live quite happily without.

Ban smoking in public places I know there are a lot of people in this country that smoke and I'll be willing to bet that some that are reading this article are fed up with people who don't smoke always harping on about their 'bad habit' and telling them what to do.  The simple fact is though that smokers are affecting the health of non-smokers as well as their own. People die each year just because they have breathed other peoples smoke and that is something we really should be taking seriously.  In my opinion an outright ban on smoking in public places is the only way forward.

There seems to be a huge number of web sites on the internet dedicated to stopping smoking or with information about smoking.  Here are a few that I thought might be of interest.

The Net Doctor
This site is very interesting as it contains information on many health issues as well as smoking.  The link above takes you to a page all about smoking and how to quit and it even includes an 'addiction calculator'.  Definately a site worth checking out in my opinion.

Lung Cancer
The facts about lung cancer.  Another page from the Net Doctor site which may be of interest to those who smoke!

Women and Lung Cancer
An interesting site with some pretty dramatic statements regarding lung cancer among women.
Apparently the information is slightly out of date now though because breast cancer has just recently overtaken lung cancer.

Smoking should be banned COMPLETLEY! It's a filthy, disgusting habit and it kills slowly. The number of times I've had some inconsiderate bast*rd deliberatley blow fag smoke in my face. It drives me crazy! The next person who does so will get PUNCHED!

My parents smoked around me when I was younger. Because I stank so much I was always being picked on by people for being smelly. Later on in life I started to smoke - it was a natural progression. Well, a few years later on my whole family was diagnosed with Brain Cancer which the doctors at Holby General diagnosed was caused by passive smoking. Yes, ironically, although everybody smoked they actually contracted cancer through each others second hand smoke. Everybody is dead now except me. I still smoke because I am a helpless addict. Obviously what I really need is to be told what to do by other people who don't smoke because they know best and my mind is unable to make an informed choice. After I lost everybody to brain cancer I decided to start taking drugs. I am now heavily into crack and smack. This is probably because I smoked. Now, worst of all, when I smoke other people around me have to withstand the horrific smell of smoke. There is a very big possibility that I might infect everybody else with brain cancer. I know because the good people on this forum have opened my eyes to the fact that smoking is indeed the most heinous of crimes, at least on par with genocide. I am a bad person. Thank the good lord, or allah, or the monkey thing that there are good people like you non-smokers out there protecting your right not to smell or contract brain cancer. I will now go and kill myself out of respect for you all.

What did they do to deserve being smoked, in public or private?

It does seem a little cruel.

I`m willing to sign any petition which bans people being smoked in public. This disgusting practice should only be pursued behind closed doors like other pervert pastimes.

Every kid should have lessons in the sophistication of smoking in the proper manner: how to hold a cigarette, brand of cigarette to choose, and for what occasion (Black Russian for diplomatic parties, Turkish for Saturday evenings, Marlborough when you need a drag etc.)

My parents were peasants when it came to smoking, absolute peasants.

My children are fine thank you very much. They are well informed regarding the dangers of smoking. You did previously say "As for parents smoking around children I`ve previously stated that that is a definite no-no" so I would have thought that you would be sympathetic to my point of view. Theme parks are places where the whole family should be able to enjoy a little bit of danger in safety.

If wishing to ban smoking makes me 'fascist' then I am proud of the label.

Pity about Fred E`s children. What are they going to grow up like with an apparently fascist, sado-masochist for a role model. Mike P`s not much better.

I`m not sure about the pasty or the fag but I do know what you mean. I don`t like trips to town.

I have just returned from a trip to town where I saw a very obese woman walking on the high street with a pasty in one hand and a cigarette in the other. I still feel physically sick!

For once I agree with Fred E, but I would have shortened the post somewhat and said :

"Smoking should be banned."

Smoking should be banned in theme parks. It's really awful when you're in a queue with your kids and someone is puffing out cigarette smoke into your face. They should go and commit suicide slowly somewhere else. I always make a point of explaining to my children in a loud voice all the diseases associated with smoking. Having your legs chopped off always seems the most interesting one.

Hooray, Carrot`s back. Come on, be fair, you can`t have your carrot cake and eat. On the one hand it seems that one fag sends some folks into paroxisms of fury and yet may possibly be obliviously happy and nostalgic with a steam or deisel train or being a frustrated pyromaniac in their back yard on Nov. 5th. What`s better, or worse ?
As for parents smoking around children I`ve previously stated that that is a definite no-no.

How many people have a 20 bonfire a day habit?

How many people take their children on steam trains every day of the week?

I see people everyday who smoke while pushing buggies or holding a baby on their laps.

Frankie b has a valid point. The carcinogens in most combustables are rarely thought of. Society in general tends to be very selective, narrow minded and discriminatory in many areas of thought and opinion. Many parents like their children to enjoy a ride on a steam train, fireworks displays and bonfires without a care for the various chemicals being released in close proximity. Dads efforts at ruining good food on a barbecue are, I feel, an excellent example of how to expose children to noxious fumes.

Lord Oldbury - 14-Jul-11 10:24

Is the issue about people smoking or purely about the smoke produced from a cigarette or a cigar and a pipe too?
If it is about the smoke and people want smoking banned in all public areas then bonfires, fireworks, steam engines, barbecues and anything else that produces smoke needs to be banned too!
