Idiots who drive on your side of the road

Complaints about bad driving have focused on the wrong things. Middle-lane hogging?  Speeding?  Parking?  Dwelling on these mere technicalities takes attention away from where it is really needed.  Because, the most offensive drivers on the road today are the increasing band of selfish chumps who:

Drive straight at you on your side of the road!

They might be passing a line of parked cars on their side, and assume they have more right than you do to your side of the road.

They might be idly cutting a corner to save on effort and tyre wear, and think you ought to brake hard or swerve into a neighbour's front garden to let them do so.  But worst of all, they might be driving straight at you on your side of the road because they couldn't give a monkey's.  In all cases, though:

They are driving straight at you on your side of the road!

Selfish idiots on your side of the road

Why do they do this?  Someone once suggested never to assume malice where brute stupidity will do.  I agree.  In most cases, they don't even know they are doing anything wrong.  Their minds are elsewhere.  Unfortunately, their cars are not.

What we need is an awareness campaign to get these people thinking about others.  As in other walks of life, people these days are increasingly thinking only of themselves, and their families.  It is that simple.  There is nothing else in their heads.  You can see it on their blank faces as you skim past them into the bushes.  If you beep or flash at them, they look shocked and affronted. They just don't have a clue what they are doing.

Think, people!  We are as important as you are.  We all have our lives to protect.  Show at least some consideration for us.  Stop behaving like arrogant, self-righteous, utterly selfish pigs.

The worst is when idiots overtake bikes and end up in your lane bearing down on you! Some how they think that overtaking bikes is not really overtaking!!

Most of those drivers, in my experience, are overtaking bikes. As if that gives them the right! Only overtake other ROAD USERS if it is safe to do so. Read the highway code.

I once lost a wing mirror to a white van man who had strayed accross the road, and he had to cheek to shout at me! At least he had to pay for new mirror also.

Hi, I agree. As a recent non van driver I am now cycling even more in London and ofte come across this mentality. The parked cars on a narrow road along with their inability to steer close to their near-side or reduce speed as they near me results in my visualy admonishing their law breaking selfishness. Too often an oncoming 'driver' avoids an open door or other obstruction by coming over to my side of the road, assuming that they have the right of way. Using the brakes and waiting simply doesn't occur to them!

Well it sounds really stupid and unbelievable but I can't remember the colour. I honestly can not.

I just remember a blonde haired woman on the phone as she pulled into my car.

Yea, police came, went past earlier and they have the "accident here, did you see anything" signs out. Keeping an eye out for witnesses.

Road was closed off for around 15 minutes and you wouldn't believe the amount of people shouting abuse at me. I'll remember that the next time they crash. I'll drive past shouting abuse for blocking the road, nevermind if they have a loved one just perished in the crash.

Opposite lanes were at a crawl from people gawping and skidding to a halt to see as much as they could. Shame the police can't issue huge fines for people looking over at accidents..... would soon stop them.... genetate more income in a day than the speed cameras across the country in a year.

Terrifying story.

I assume the police were called to the scene.

Surely there were witnesses and BMW X5s with very recent damage to the offside wing are not exactly common. Armed with the make, colour, female driver and evidence of damage, detection would be fairly simple making the need for a registration number irrelevant.

I've just had my pride and joy totally written off my some moronic scumbag on the A444.

2 lane duel carrageway. I was sat behind a white van, both of us slowly approching and overtaking a lorry in lane 1 at 60mph.

Some female genitalia came storming up lane 1 in a BMW X5 but had to slow because of the lorry in his path. She then pulled into my n/s front wing sending me sideways into the central railings to what I saw were 2 lorrys overtaking in lane 2 on the opposite direction. Other than nearly pooing myself and yelling a long abusive word to the woman on the mobile phone in the X5 that did not stop, while I was travelling sideways, I have ended up with both sides of my car being smashed to hell and now have to claim off my own insurance for something that a scumbag oxygen wasting turd featured screw up of a cow, did.

No one got a reg plate or anything. Highly unlikely she will be caught. Hope I don't take the law into my own hands. Might introduce her face to her steering wheel a few dozen times, hard. If I ever catch her that is.

With all these road-related problems, there are just too many cars on the road, and too many pedestrians on the pavement. This country is too crowded, FULL STOP! It's about time a few million of us volunteered not to be saved in hospital when we are ill; this will soon put the UK's population in check.

Funny how they drive on the right side when faced with a 30 ton truck eh?

But where in driving test/lessons does it say 'you must drive with the offside wheel on the centre line'...the mind boggles

Idiot of a driver pulls out to overtake without looking just as a vehicle was about to overtake him. He was tailgating then suddenly decides to overtake without any signal either.

Other driver had to brake hard.

At least it was a proper sports car, usually it's a nutter in a white van or some kid in a Renault Clito worth £50 with £3000 of crap hanging off it.

Motorcycles overtaking a long queue of cars often drive on the wrong side of the road. They are asking to get ki11ed. They should be banned for life for dangerous driving.

Motorcycles should be banned.

Killers on Two Wheels - 25-Aug-09 06:35

A red TVR Chimaera sports car reg number
DSE444.

At approx 19:15 on 24/08/09 this numbskull of a driver was speeding in a 40 mph zone.

I was doing 40 and gently braked for bends and roundabouts but he was getting up my brown and smelly and regularly had to break hard because he was too impatient and too close.

Along a straight stretch he overtook at about 50 and I caught up with him at the traffic lights. He then sped off in a 30 mph zone.

If I was in front of him as the lights turned red I would have braked letting him run into the back of me as I am not going to be intimidated to go through an amber or red light with his presence so close to my rear.

The speeding wasn't the issue but his disrespect towards other motorists such as harassment, cutting into other drivers paths expecting other motorists to get out of his way.

He reminds me of something like politicians expecting special privileges over others and getting away with wrongdoing.

Get rid of motorists like him like the politicians we have at the present.

My boyfriend will overtake someone doing 55 in a 60. He will get so close to their rear end that you can't see road between you and them, then pull out, and when there's about 5 car lengths gone by, he may begin thinking about pulling in. Needless to say, this irritates me to no end, and is extremely dangerous. I flat out refuse to stay in the car with him as soon as he starts doing it.

Oh Simo, "I am a very good (maybe too fast) driver", it's virtually impossible to judge your own driving or riding.

If the combine was a modern one, ie truly enormous, on the road it should have had an escort vehicle in front, stopping oncoming traffic as required. As Paddy points out, these things are not exactly 'road frinendly', being designed for modern farms with big fields.

Unfortunately, the standards of driving on the road today are poor. Anticipation, consequences and consideration are rarely thought of when it comes to passing a driving 'test' -whatever that is...! However, it seems interesting to assess priorities of drivers ocassionally:
boltz 30-Aug-2008 15:37......................Hang on.....
Combine Harvester hogging the road.... Lets just consider this for a moment. A combine is a) very big; its rearward visibility is poor, even with mirrors, making reversing tricky at the best of times. A combine is also b) skid-steer, meaning the rear pair of wheels steer the whole machine. Whilst this gives great accuracy in following a crop line, it makes it pretty tricky to reverse due to the nature of the 'pivot-point' of the turn. -Imagine sitting on the rear bumper of your car instead of the driving seat and directing the vehicle in reverse from there. Given the nature of these machines it would be fair to expect that it was only going a short distance. -Probably to cut a crop that will not return its true maket value due to EU short sightedness. So, is it truthly that outrageous that the combine would expect you to oblige and reverse a short distance? After all, this is a manoeuvre that most of us undertake in small (manoeuvrable!) vehicles everyday, often into tight spaces.
Give the combine a break. I would hope that had you parked your car legally and were required to move it to allow the combine safe passage, that you would happily do this. This is the machine, and the operator which is allowing you to have cheap supermarket bread on your table.
I hope you were on the road in a professional capacity also. Otherwise, obstructing someone else trying to make an honest living in tough circumstances is a simply unfair exercise, irrelevent of your worry about who is obstructing who.

Today I was confronted by a combine harvester on my side of the road , he had ample opportunity to let me pass before the road narrowed but came bullishly on fully expecting me to reverse all the way up the road to let him pass the fact I could see mouthing obscenities about me only made me more adamant to stay put and make him reverse.
I thought that if you are the driver of a vehicle that is either wide or long it is your responsibilty to take extra care and not assume other drivers will drive in to hedges to let you pass.
What is the law on this.
If I had not reversed out of the way could I have been nicked for obstruction although I was on my side of the road.
What if I had parked there legally earlier and he then came down the road do I then have to move my car to let him by?
