Hotmail and Yahoo spam email annoying

Just when you thought it was safe to open your inbox, along comes another huge helping of spam mail from Hotmail and Yahoo along with so many other culprits it's impossible to list them all.  There's no escaping this phenomenon because anyone can set up a web mail account and there's no shortage of victims out there to target these mails at.  Funnily enough, I've now got a GMail account and don't have nearly as much spam.

How many times have you looked in your mail inbox and discovered numerous emails from people that you do not know offering anything from thingy enlargements and more adult material than you can chuck a stick at, right through to wonderful business opportunities that will make you rich in about twenty minutes?  I've had my fair share of this sort of stuff and to be honest I'm getting really fed up with it.

junk mail On top of all this I get mail from numerous companies all trying to sell me their products and services most of which really do not interest me.  If this type of stuff was meant to be a targeted mail shot, then it was most definitely way off the mark!  Don't get me wrong, its not that I hate email, because I don't mind receiving mail from a site that I have subscribed to or email from friends.  I just hate receiving junk mail and don't think that I should have to put up with it.

To be fair, many of the big web mail companies such as Yahoo and Hotmail have provided facilities for filtering incoming mail and dumping them into junk e-mail box.   This approach can be fairly successful for a lot of people as you can have these messages automatically deleted so you never see any of them.  The problem there is that some emails that are not necessarily junk could end up being deleted by mistake. Of course the way round this is to have all your spam directed into one mailbox that you will still have to trawl through at some stage and decide what is and what isn't trash.

In am so tired of Yahoo, I get 20 or so a day. I always delete them without opening, but just the other night when I was not even logged on my e-mail address sent spam or a virus to all my contacts. Goodbye Yahoo, you are a disgrace.

I use mailwasher and bounce all spam, unfortunately a lot of spam does come from 'untraceable' addresses but at least I get some satisfaction, however, DO NOT ever click the unsubscribe link on any email as much of this spam simply guesses email addresses and if you send an unsubscribe request you are simply confirming a valid email address so you will receive MUCH more spam as the sender definately knows your email address is valid.

hi I am jake sending out these mails. I point out that if their policy does not hold the spammer traceable and responsible then they are responsible. I wish someone would take them to court and make them responsible and get them to tighten up their policies. They would then do something about it quickly!

I think it is not only annoying but illegal. I have written, often, to yahoo to tell them to stop sending out these mails. I point out that if their policy does not hold the spammer traceable and responsible then they are responsible. I wish someone would take them to court and make them responsible and get them to tighten up their policies. They would then do something about it quickly!

I would happily do it if I knew how.

I stop using Yahoo mail service after being using it for about 3 years..its absolutely rubbish!!

Msn is better, but rather than receiving junks, it constantly send advert to ALL of my friends which not only annoys me but my friends.!!

Now I start to use more Google gmail, which filters anything which I think its the best mail box provider!

You hit the nail on the head about Yahoo's spam filter - it often spamtags valid email - EVEN FROM ME TO MYSELF! I not only have an email account at Yahoo; I PAY for a domain name hosted by them for a business account. I sometimes send myself an email as a reminder to do something . It suddenly started sending those to the 'bulk folder' as though it was spam! For crying out loud! The FROM email address is one of my official business email addresses and it ~thinks~ it is spam? To add insult to injury, even though they have a very good email message search feature, some IDIOT at Yahoo made the outright moronic decision to NOT include the bulk filter on an email message search! Example.. I get call from a new customer and I give them my email address. A couple days go by and.. no email from them in my inbox so I call them back and they say that they sent it. I do a message search and nothing is found. But if I go to the bulk folder, dredge through HUNDREDS of spam messages that came in only two days time - there it is! (My domain name is 14 years old so I'm on the list of every spammer in the universe) HEY STUPID PERSON AT YAHOO... Of all the possible reasons WHY I need to search my messages, looking for a missing one that wrongly went to the bulk folder is MY MOST COMMON REASON BUT YOU DUMB TWITS LOCKED IT OUT!

Concerning spam that does come through, many have no 'from' field. ZERO of the valid emails I receive have no 'from' field - ZERO! Such emails shouldn't even be accepted - why not just black hole the IP they came from?

I made a new Yahoo and a MSN account on the same day. Since I already had both a Yahoo and MSN accounts, I didn't use these new accounts right away. When I got back to them a week later, Yahoo had about 80 pieces of spam in the Spam folder. MSN had none. Some of the spam in the Yahoo folder had even used my first name that I recorded on the Yahoo sign up, to address me in their spam mail. A month later I still haven't used the Yahoo account, but I still get about 10 -15 new pieces of spam mail in the spam folder every day. Yahoo sure doesn't provide the protection that MSN does.

I also used to be a victim of lot's Spam but get hardly any these days. With my latest email address, I have configured a filter that deletes all emails sent from addresses that don't match those in my address book and those from companies that aren't on my "safe" list.. So if an email comes from someone who I don't know, they get a reply saying "Message ignored" embedded in a 2MB bmp to clog their inbox. It then gets deleted, removed from trash and email address then blocked. I don't see the problem of sending some unwanted carp in return to give them a bit of payback. If a message is that important, those concerned can phone me. PS. Don't sign up with Tiscali !!!

Captain D,
I never give out my email address to people I don't know and the sites that I am getting spam from I have never visited.

I would refer you to the report on several news sites re. the 92,000,000 AOL usernames sold to spammers by an ex employee and the 600,000 items of search data inadvertantly given to researchers which are now in the public domain by one of AOL's senior technical managers who then had to resign.

Possibly one of the reasons people get spammed.

I think the majority of spam gets around because many are too freely giving out their email address. So many places try to get you to register for this, register for that ... is it any wonder why you're getting spammed? I also realize there are numerous back door ways to spread spam, but to at least cut down or or eliminate as much of it as you can, don't give out your email address unless there's a absolute need for doing so...

With regards the porno spam that I have been struggling to keep off my AOL user account. After having a tussle online with AOL tech help who said they could only handle unsolicited pornographic email from aol sources,lo and behold AOL's main article on their homepage is as follows and I have only copied the start for the sake of modesty

YOU ARE HERE: AOL Home > Lifestyle > After Dark Women: Perfect your oral technique
Not sure where to start when it comes to oral? Don't worry - there are tried and tested techniques that are easy to learn. Read on to perfect your oral sex technique and make him smile.

The rest was on the same lines with pictures and full instructions.

How hypocritical can anyone get.

I have heard rumours that spammers are paying what amounts to a mail tax which enables them to bypass servers spam filters and send spam to the customers.
Nice little earner for someone.

No Spam for two days on AOL.
Mind you I have blocked my master screen name completely and all spam goes to the spam folder to be automatically deleted. Not really the best solution but at least it works.

Man pleads guilty to stealing 92 million AOL email addresses, Sophos reports on spam case

92 million AOL email addresses are said to be in the hands of spammers.
A 24-year-old former AOL employee, has pleaded guilty to stealing a list of 92 million email addresses of the ISP's customers and selling it to spammers for $28,000.

Jason Smathers of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, told Judge Alvin Hellerstein at the US District Court in Manhattan, that he sold the list of email addresses to a man planning to market an offshore gambling website to AOL customers, knowing that the list of screen names might end up in the hands of other spammers.

According to the authorities, Smathers - who was fired by AOL in June 2004 - used another employee's access code to steal the list of AOL customers from its headquarters in Dulles, Virginia.

Smathers is alleged to have sold the list to 21-year-old Sean Dunaway of Las Vegas, to promote an internet gambling website before being sold on to others. One of the other spammers reported the theft to the authorities following his own prosecution, according to court papers. Charges are pending against Dunaway.

"The valuable list of AOL subscribers is still believed to be circulating amongst the spammer community - although the ISP is working hard to defend its users from junk email," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "It is encouraging to see the authorities cracking down on those who abuse the internet and make online life a misery for countless millions of web users."

Smathers, who is due to be sentenced in May, could face between 18-24 months in jail.
I would say security begins at home. What can you do when an ex employee of your IP sels your details to a spammer. No chance

Re spam emails.

Funnily enough the last email I got from AOL after reporting this spam for nearly two weeks was if you have a problem with spam please go to keyword notify and report it to us.

This is after reporting 50 odd instances of these emails and hours spent on the net and phone to try and get it sorted.
I feel like finding the nearest brick wall and banging my head against it.
The annoying thing is I am trapped in a twelve month contract till April 2007 with idiots like this.

I think the comment about spammers only trying to make a living is a bit like saying a mugger needed the money or does that poster really need to buy the products pushed?
