Let's start with the fact I'm starting a new business.  This is obviously stressful enough without the additional and to be frank, quite definitely unwanted problems that come with dealing with BT!

A business telephone

I am currently renting the property, and the phone number that was previously there has been reserved by the owner ( a very good phone number).  I arranged with the landlord to get the phone number re-connected 15 days before we opened (we've set up pretty quick, so couldn't really be done sooner).

Anyway, he phoned BT and the confirmed that our phone number would be live at 10am on the 1st of August.  Now on the 5th of August I decided to check the number so that I could divert it to my mobile until we actually open.  I dialed the number and got a "Sorry you have dialed an incorrect number" message.

First thing Monday morning I went to talk to the owner who seemed quite confused as he tried the number himself and got the same response about dialing an incorrect number.  We decided to physically go to the phone and check it out for ourselves.  Well it worked okay, but it was the wrong bleeding phone number!  This really wasn't a good thing as all our advertising, menus, car vinyl etc. has OUR phone number on it.

He decided to phone BT and get it sorted out.  After two phone calls, they promised to ring back within the hour.  Nothing.  On the Tuesday he rang back again and was assured by the operator at the other end that the phone number has been changed and would be live within 24 hours.

At 2pm on the Wednesday and 24 hours later the phone number still hadn't been sorted out.  At least another three phone calls of being promised a call back - no surprises, we didn't get a call back.  The owner called their complaints department and the person he spoke to can see that the job is on there to be done, but nothing IS being done about it.  Once again, 'its not his department', so he couldn't fix it and told us somebody would ring us back... again!

Birds on a telephone line

On Thursday, he got a letter from BT confirming the phone number has been changed, but of course it hadn't.  More phone calls to BT and the operators tell us its a 30 second job, but its not their department so they can't do it.  They can see it all on their monitors and we get another promise of a ring back - then nothing.

Friday, more phone calls and I suggested to the property owner that they refuse to get off the phone until the problem is sorted (has worked for me a few times in the past).  Taking my advice, they get passed onto another department.  The lady here says 'sorry I can't help you, somebody will ring you back'.  This time he digs his heels in and explains that nobody EVER rings back and that this has to be sorted right away.

Apparently the operator he spoke to then physically went to the correct department that should have dealt with our problem.  When she came back she said that the phone number has been sold by BT and no longer belongs to them.  Well, this is impossible because it was reserved by BT themselves and they sent out a letter of confirmation stating the number is theirs, so after a bit more perseverance we are then told that we CAN have the number back, but they can't promise when.

Well, it's now 3 days until we open, and BT have still got our phone number...  What a great start to our new business!  Thanks BT!

BT - what a joke. At least they don't run the rail network or we'd have daily crashes - which were no-ones' fault. Ref below: the poor guys in Asia are only doing their job but YES it IS hard to understand them. If communication is key, employ someone that can communicate effectively.

Finally... to anyone wanting to know where else to go, try 'The Phone Co-op' they're based in the UK; they seem to actually care and whilst they don't always get it right, they do try.

Good luck.

So sick am I with BT and their call centres based in India/Pakistan that I am now seeking an alternative telecom & broadband provider. Understanding the operator is the most difficult thing. A language is spoken which only resembles English, sometimes.

Only after complaining via their Chairman did I manage to get compensation and the problem resolved. They had been taking payments for the same a/c by both credit and debit card each month month for about 5 months.

BT's bad business practices

A gripe about BT. 6mths ago I'd moved into a property and tried for 5 long weeks to get them to put a line on.

After no joy, gave up, sent a complaint into their complaints dept. explaining all that I'd been put through and asked them to cancel the service.

It now appears they got the billing bit right, and turns out I'm actually being billed for a service I never received and money is being debited out of an account of mine.

Emailed the complaints dept again over the last few days to now finally get an email back from BT, their words exactly:

"In response to your e-mail, I would like to begin by offering my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and distress you have undoubtedly been caused. Furthermore, I wish to inform you that your account is active and your order has been processed and all items are completed. The telephone number for this account is 0208889**** . But as you said that the line has never worked so in this case you need to contact our faults department at 0800 800 151 so that they can resolve the issue as soon as possible. If there is any fault in the line for which BT is responsible, the amount might get refunded to you."

This is honestly ridiculous. I can't actually believe the govt. allows this company to operate.

Listen - I hear you! My husband set up a Transport Company last year. We couldn't get Broadband and he had to use 'Dial-Up' also called 'Dial up a Really Big Bill' - I swear we could have bought a small island in the South Pacific for the amount of money BT got their hands on!
Anyway - we decided to go for Satellite as in - 'BT SATELLITE IS COMING'!!!
Can I just say that the only people who were aware the Satllite is coming is 'US'!
We got our dish - large, ugly and offensive - like most of the family circle - and that's where it ended! We have yet to find a BT employee who doesn't glaze over at the thought of 'satellite', I have yet to find someone who says ' yes, you have got the right number' and I would love to lay my hands on the BT employee who said 'Go onto the internet, www.bt.com' as there are over 140,000 sites available!!!
In the meantime - we received an email a few days ago saying that if my husband didn't use 'dial-up', he will lose his email address!!!!! The email address on all of his business documentation. Hellooooooooo. The wheel is turning but the hamster is dead - that's BT!!
This evening, I contacted the Chief Executive Officer of BT, I have complained about the Service, the Costs and the Staff! I will probably be deleted over the next few days!
Even my Rockstar wages cannot stretch to the costs of a BT Service that is ineffective!!! The people who run these monopolies need to have their heads examined .............................don't start me about Tesco's, that's another story!!

Reply to BT Openreach suck, You are wrong, BT is Openreach's customer not you. Openreach are not allowed to use common sense for BT customers just the same as when working for any other providers customers as OFCOM would say it was unfair to treat customers differently. Openreach will only do what they are instructed to by your comms. provider. Now if Your provider is as useless as everybody is saying, then that's the sort of service you'll get from openreach. This is the mentality that has cause so much grief in todays "open" telecoms market. Do You really think that allowing different companies to be let loose on the only complete telephone network in the UK would improve things ?. It would have completely the opposite effect with one company's engineers taking lines from others and making the network even worse than it already is.

Not something im suprised to read about as we are having the exact same problem. We ordered a new Business line for our new premises over 2 weeks ago. Since then BT have lied, made errors, lied some more, not turned up on 4 occassions, turned up when they weren't supposed to and now said "sorry we dont know what else we can do" Install the line would be an idea!!!! It seems that BT Openreach and BT don't like talking to each other and the fact that Openreach refuse to talk to the customer, no Openreach BT is NOT your customer WE ARE.

This is summed up by the fact that Openreach turned up to connect the line a week ago. They found a fault on the line. They claimed that they phoned us and told us about this (we have all calls and phone numbers recorded so we know they are lying) Instead of telling BT Sales they found a fault they just cancelled our order and submitted a fault on a phone line that isn't physically connected to anything. Its high time the government took the physical installation side of things out of BT's hands and offered it up to other companies, lets be honest they couldnt do any worse.
