Heading towards a police state?

Are we really sleep walking towards a police state?  Britain has by far the largest number of cameras in the world with an estimated five million in public and private hands.  That's about one for every 12 people.  Of course it's only to watch the bad guys to keep us safe.

A security camera - heading towards a police state?

Is it that the population is being conditioned and moulded to get us to accept giving up our freedom and rights by accepting that a controlling and surveillance society is normal and just the way it is and has to be for our safety and well being?

One of the most popular programs on UK and international TV is "Big Brother".  It gives the message that to live under conditions like this is OK even advantageous, the public audition in there 100's of 1000's to try and get in to be watched 24/7 and controlled to every point of their lives.

A dumbed down population is less likely to have the intelligence or open mindedness to see what is happening.  Who would be the easiest to control and less likely to protest?  An intelligent, articulate, ambitious and well informed population or one that spends their time wrapped up watching TV.

It seems a long time since the concept of Big Brother sounded dark and menacing rather than part of light entertainment.  But when the cameras are turned on the authorities, they can show uncomfortable images.

Do you see Britain's network of CCTV cameras as a deterrent to criminals, or an invasion of privacy?  Being watched is OK yes?  It must be if you do it to others.

They only film you if you are a permanent resident of this country , I had an accident involving a forign lorry driver and mid day on the m6 in september the cameras were not on , they might have been on though if I had hit him, or say I had been speeding!

It is part of New Labour's nefarious control-freak agenda. As far as law and order goes, its reactive. Yes, you got attacked and we've got it on camera so we can prove who broke your jaw - great. The simpler, proactive alternative is more beat policeman to prevent crime rather than record it. We seem to be turning into - and indeed sleepwalking towards - a society of watchers rather than doers.
If you want to get value out of CCTV if ever accosted in the street, just point to the camera, ask the moron in question to smile and make good your escape as mastermind looks for the camera.

I think we are already a police state, There is so much CCTV. That's bad enough. But even what you do in your own home isn't private. When on the computer, your IP address can be traced. Plus, the Government recording everything you do online only makes me more paranoid of the authorities.

Another aspect of this situation is the supposed 'safeguards' Data Protection Act, which are nothing of the sort.

Information must only be kept for so long as it is relevant, or so we are led to believe. Yet the police are keen to keep records of DNA taken from suspects (i.e. innocent until proven guilty) and convicted criminals alike for ever.

I imagine similar pressure will be exerted to keep CCTV and other electronic records such as mobile telephone conversations, emails and text messages, records of website visits, passport use data (i.e. when a passport is used to enter / leave the UK), ANPR images and many more.

Heaven knows what life will be like if identity cards are introduced!

Police who use the uniform to be bullies ... I've got a friend whose sentence was deferred by the court and is expected to be dealt with leniently after the time is up. She has police all over her everywhere she goes now ( and it's a very small town so avoiding them is somewhat difficult ). The cop who arrested her first time has even gone so far as to stop her in the street and order her into the police car where he has proceeded to try to make her admit to something she hadn't done and bully her when she refuses to admit to it. It sounds farcical but I can assure you that it's frightening especially when someone is on their own and has mental health problems ( of which the police are aware ) that cause them anxiety and panic attacks. It's up to the courts to deal with people who've been charged with crimes as the court sees fit and whilst some people, police included, might not like the outcome of court cases, it is not their place nor indeed anyone's place but the court, to pass judgement. The police are not judge, jury and executioner. As soon as that happens we start living in a police state and all of us can become afraid of the knock on the door in the night. Me, I think I'd sell up and move to Mars.

Its true. The world is being prepped for the anti-christ who will be the sole person in power. Notice the eye of horus in the freemason pyramid on the dollar bill. The powers that be want a new world order and its happening so slowly that people dont realize what is going on, like a frog in hot water....

Has anyone heard of the plans by this government to create a database to keep records of phone calls, e mails and internet sites visited by every person in this country. The set up could cost around £12 billion so is most likley to be sent out to a private company, I feel this to be a personal invasion of privacy and has no place in a free democratic country (which it seems we are not any longer). Can we really trust any government with this information, or private company for that matter, No other country in the world has plans to do this,so why here. This is not a piece of fiction as I understand that Ms Smith our home secretary is already in consultations re this. Welcome to the soviet state of Britain.

the fixed penalty the police give the congestion charge fuel tax parking fines and all the other forms of stealing money from the motorist made possible by new tecnoligy has resulted in the disposable income of such large numbers that it has had such an affect on our economy that it has bankrupt our country in the past we got by perfectly well without all this nonsense can you imagine how much money that should have been spent supporting our industrys

I take it you're not really in favour of Google Street view passing by your house then? Personally I think some people take the whole privacy thing a bit too far and are paranoid that big brother is watching. I'm all in favour of live cameras everywhere waching everything - don't you think the world would be a safer place if everything was above board and visible?

Police state - I discovered my house being displayed on the internet courtsy of the department of Transport and Surrey Police - following a few 'lost it real bad' type emails - 12 hours later the cameras are going out across the country including the one displaying the readyness of my house for any burgular world wide to see if I've gone to bed.... it started ....... the remainder is not suitable for sensitive ears!!

Dictator Hoon / Madam Smith

In your paranoia of generating a police state - you claim to have the ability to feel the pulse of the electorate and their personal needs -
Well I don't need you or your camera operators watching over me -
I do not need them checking if I have my pyjamas on or sleep naked - I do not need them to check if our cars are in our drive - if you really want to know who I am calling emailing of visiting - all you have to do is ASK - at 07:28 this morning if you check your tapes you will see I left the front door of my house wearing a blue Dressing gown and collect six pints of milk from the door step showed them to the camera and re-entered my property.....

With more Government departments and Private companies able to access everyones personal records, ever increasing use of cameras (CCTV, Speed, Motorway,Etc.) we are moving at ever increasing speed towards George Orwells "1984" how long before we have the "thought police" too? Or is it already here with Political Correctness??
Put me on your list for the Anti- surveylance religion grumpyoldwoman
