Ripped off Britain indeed?  My gripe is aimed at those people who always feel ripped off and their ill informed rants and badly researched opinions about how they are being ripped off.  Let me be clear, if you receive poor service, shoddy products or encounter dishonesty there is a clear reason to be upset and a good reason to shame the responsible and debate the issue.

What I find objectionable are those people in Britain who simply decide they are paying too much.  You can see these comments on these pages for a diverse range of products and services such as sandwiches, pizzas, opticians, trendy bars and garages etc.  They seem to believe that they are being "ripped off" because the prices of the items do not meet their own highly questionable economic criteria.

Do people not understand that if all these places sell a large sandwich for £3-£3.50, it is not because they have met up and agreed to rip off the great British public, it is because the item sold has a cost, and a profit should be made (controversial I know - but hey, you can say what you like on these pages).

Ripped off Britain

If there are many sandwich shops (just as an example, but you can follow it through with anything) the competition increases, as does the diversity of what is on offer and the price will be kept at reasonable level.  It’s a pretty easy to understand formula really.

I question those who deem themselves "ripped off", specifically on how they make their living?  I guess they are on a salary and only have to justify themselves to their boss once a year at pay review.  I doubt very much that they run their own business and if they ever had and, used their odd economic rules I seriously doubt their business lasted very long.

It would be interesting though to turn the spotlight on these kinds of people; to justify their own salary against the products and services their particular company offers and decide if they too are part of the conspiracy which is known as "ripped off" Britain!

We live in a country of economic bustards, orphaned from the nation's wealth, alienated from its land and property, a nation of citizens illegitimised from their birth rights, flooded with the underclass, drowned with the uptake of trash from the third world, ousted by over-taxation. We were sold a pig in the poke, instant wealth through Thatcherism. All it has done is to make 99% of the youth today poorer than they have ever been, working all hours for wages less than that required to keep body and soul together. The ultra-rich get fatly rich faster than ever before. All the rest of us suffer considerably.

if people think petrol etc is too expensive, why don't they just shut up and not buy it instead of ranting about tax and blaming Labour for everything

Have you noticed pay rises never match inflation, and the promotions today are sham?

I have been promoted three times in my company since I joined it four years ago, all the way from basic grade to principal bottle-washer. Every time the promotions took place at pay review time, and the pay rise due for a promotion, a so called "merit-increase", but with no merit to it whatsover, scarcely matched inflation. This year it was far less than official inflation

What reward is there in a society which does this? None of course.

I used to be able to afford a 2 litre car. Not anymore. I can scarcely buy a Nissan Micra nowadays.

I was born into a family which had a 3-bedroom house in the suburbs of London. My father was nothing but a simple bank-clerk. Today I technically have a more important job than him, but I cannot afford one half of the house he bought.

Why hasn't Britain adopted the Euro yet? Let me tell you why. The Government and businesses can rip you off more whilst it doesn't. Proper economic comparison is thwarted, whilst we don't take it up.

OP
This is rip off britain, they justify the reason for the prices as you have that everything has a cost.

Why is Petrol taxed so high.
Why is Alcohol taxed so high.
Why is Motorway Petrol dearer.
Why are meals on Motorways dearer.
Why is it cheaper to Holiday abroad.
Why are Clothes cheaper abroad.
Why are white goods cheaper abroad.
Why are things cheaper on the Internet.

Rip off Britain also known as Civil Servants.

There are rip-off companies, in particular the water companies. We cannot simply go elsewhere for our water. However, with water companies, it is WHERE the rip-off happens. The price the consumer pays is foisted on us by The Regulator! The water companies cannot set any old price, The Regulator has to agree it. However, the Water companies are entitled to put their case to The Regulator for price increases. The Regulator has been naive in thinking that the Water companies would not be dishonest in putting their case. Yet the Fraud Squad have been called in to investigate a number of different cases of dishonesty in the way that Water companies, understate their income and overstate their costs, when angling for a price increase.

Rip-offs happen when you buy a new car which frequently goes wrong and the dealer and the manufacturer close ranks and refuse to replace it.

Rip-offs happen with charges made by Banks when a mortgage is repaid, even if all the criteria for avoiding early redemption have been met. The closing fee I am on about is something quite different to early redemption charges. I should Know Barclays (Woolwich) tried it on with me. They apologised and had to refund £195.00. But I had to fight for it.

Council tax, is clearly a rip-off, you have to pay it or go to jail, yet the price increase of this tax always exceeds the official rate of inflation. Not only that, the powers that be thought it "fair" to remove council tax from the calculations used to determine the rate of inflation. Only obscenely rich people would do that. Incidentally the same people also took energy costs out of the same calculation. If this isn't cheating to keep the rate of inflation figure low, to ensure pay rises are kept low, I don't know what is.

I love the way you can post something about how your wife or husband left you, and some dink will come back and say something like, "well you had to ahve done something to cause it." you can post how you have been rip-off in a Court Case you have in Appeal, etc. only again to have some know it all say something like :you people are always against the Justice System or the Judge because you were wrong and lost your case." Well I know, we have to love know it all's and stupid people also. But that don't mean I can't wish a buliding would fall on them so they can really live in darkness.

When it comes to rip-offs and companies making profits. Rip-offs is a con, making profit is what every criminal in jail is about, getting something for nothing or a lot for a little effort. But companies rip-ing-off people has become a "most of the time dealing," the bigger the Company, the less your business means to them because someone else will always fill your place with dollars or for dollars.

So is the employer ripping off the employee or is the employee ripping off the employer, or both?!

Hang on we're missing the point. Humans are not all Robots. If an employer wants complete autonomy and standardisation, get Robots in. Until the employer can, he should accept the varied behaviour that Human Beings bring to the organisation, good and bad. Sometimes that behaviour might lead to the employer being "ripped off." What I get fed up with is the employer failing to remember that he employed human beings with all their innefficiencies. In effect he knew in advance what could happen but took the risk anyway. Obviously the employer has many powers at his disposal to try and minimise the impact. But for the employer to bleat about a duff human being in stores or wherever is just hypocritical, if not puerile.

I think many employees do go on to run their own businesses in areas that they have worked in. There are many reasons given, high on the list is freedom from being ripped off by the old employer! An ex-employee of a company I work for has now set up a small office across the road, in competition. My boss is so full of loathing that the hatred in that direction is palpable!

Council Tax: Whilst we pay a reasonable amount here in the UK, I feel sorry for those in The USA. Their rate of 'Property Tax' (which is like our Council Tax) is charged at 6% yearly of their property value. We are most fortunate, for now...

I am stunned you do not realise that there is no division between the ‘rip-off merchant’ and any other seller. Everyone wants to make the most profit they can. Profit is the bottom line. Profit drives our economy. Profiteering is the name of the game. There are no businesses that do not make as much profit as they can. There is no such thing as a reasonable profit. Profit is the driving force of society. To quote David Suzuki:

“The fact of the matter is that today, stuff-selling mega-corporations have a huge influence on our daily lives. And because of the competitive nature of our global economy, these corporations are generally only concerned with one thing. The bottom line. That is, maximizing profit, regardless of the social or environmental costs”.
“Off course capitalism is flawed but no one has come up with a workable alternative unless you are gonna stun us with yet more of your cleverness.”

There are many alternatives to Capitalism. Educate yourself about them. But if you know that “capitalism is flawed” why are you criticising the people who have come here to have a gripe about it. My point was simple I was criticising your over-simplistic view of how the economy works. As far as it not amounting to much well it’s fine by me that you think that, in fact I am glad you do. To me your gripe is not only an empty one but a false one. That is, you are discontented that people who are unhappy that they pay too much don’t keep quiet about it. Or even that people who believe they pay too much are actually wrong about that. I don’t think you are that stupid.

Rags

I loved your schoolboy explanation of how Capitalism works. But the thing you haven’t grasped is that this applies from top to bottom. The person who sells the sandwiches has the same problem as the person who wishes to buy them. And his suppliers have the same problem and so on. It is a web of conflicting interests. It is a vicious circle not a one off transaction. Market forces do not operate in such simplistic terms. This gives rise to so much unfairness and the bottom (the poor) cop the most of it. I do not have the time or compunction to illustrate that point further except to say that Capitalism (Profit Making) leads to Different Interests leads to Conflict. This gives rise to a world of inequality.

“If there is a conflicting interest between buyer and seller and the seller sets his price too high, the buyer is not forced to buy”. So you do not have to eat, keep warm and cloth yourself and need security. I know that what you are suggesting is that we have a choice. The trouble is when you look at the system in more detail we do not have a choice. The choice we have is between what we are given and that is no choice at all.
