We buy large vehicles for a reason

Here's something that really grinds my gears.  People who complain about large vehicles intimidating other drivers.  Speaking as someone that drives a full-size pickup 4x4 that is larger than most small flat's in this country, there are more reasons most of us own these machines aside from your inferiority complex.

A 4x4 vehicle driving off road, large vehicles intimidating?

Safety is the main reason for buying a large vehicle, especially after seeing the kind of damage done when a small car is involved with an accident with a lorry - not a pretty sight.  Also, a better view and command of the road increases safety.  You have more chance of avoiding upcoming hazards if you can see what's up ahead.

Either a double parked 4x4 or dents in your car

Parking is a pain and most of us go out of our way to park farther out in the car park away from most, however you cannot have it both ways.  You cannot complain if we take up two miniature parking spots and in the same breath complain about dents in your car from opening doors.  Which would you prefer to have, the dents or the 4x4 pickup using a couple of parking spots instead of one?

People buy things in life for a multitude of reasons.  I'm sure most of the things you buy in life we could complain about and be equally as ignorant about in the same way that you feel about our large vehicles.  If you don't like us intimidating you on the highway, it means your going to slow and need to be in the left lane.  Get out of the way and the problem sorts itself out.

they have to have an £89,000 Range Rover to go for a toddle round town while their finance director husband sits on his ars e , swanny about checking the make up and looking down into the underlings cars to see what they are like inside and feeling upper by their raised vantage point.
It is also very easy to park these things as you can just partly mount the pavement and it wont look out of place, and if you dont know how to reverse you can just sit there and grin at the oncoming driver on the single track road each time, maybe wave your hand to let them know to skedaddle out of your way, you are standing firm and they can reverse as you are bigger and higher.

extra bonus= if you hit somebodies car in a carpark and theres nobody looking and no cameras, you can clear off and hey no problem for you Ha Ha Ha underlings, all you need to do is get a soapy cloth to wipe the paint off your bumper while they have to pick up a mangled bumper and wing from the road or carpark and explain themselves to the policeman who demands to know what they have been up to.

If an underling gets in your way, how dare they, nobody else looking? just push them off the road in to the ditch and drive on drive on

We buy large vehicles for a reason - The reason is because a few of your friends and neighbours have one and you don't want to feel left out.

You also now have the right to take up two parking spaces in your Chelsea Tractor at a car park or a supermarket.

You are the type of person that has just got to have one, as you all are, with the exception of those used for agricultural, outdoor pursuits and rescue agencies.

If fuel was £25 a gallon you would still have to have your Chelsea Tractor.

Exactly.. the accidents happen with the small vehicles, damages it at its peak while if the vehicle is huge, the damage will be minimal. Thus it is said to have the huge vehicles instead of the small ones.

I hate these huge cars. People use them to drop their kids off at school and then hurtle down a narrow lane at speed, sending pedestrians flying to flatten themselves against the walls.

I'm sure the drivers love this but it really annoys me. Especially in icy weather, if the 4 x 4 slips on black ice, it could easily pin me against the wall. Not funny.

Sure, use them on farms but not for driving the kids to school.

Not true, Pete.

My friend has a 4 x 4 because she has to tow a trailer with her 2 horses inside.

I used to have a land rover because it was the most practical vehicle to get around rural Hampshire with two dogs and all my horsey equipment.

People who drive 4 x4's and similar vehicles do it purely because think it impresses people. It doesn't. They're assholes.

I have two Volvo 940 estates, circa 1992 and 1995, one was bought for £800-00 six years ago, the other for £500-00 two years ago, but before anyone crucifies me on my carbon footprint I only do 6k miles a year combined work commuting milage,

Great in the winter with heated seats, and the heaters are the best I have known in a car, yes, they do drink petrol, but you get this cost back at the next MOT as they are built like tanks, the other benefit is the crash protection you get for your money, ok no airbags here, but it would have to be a good crash to injure you.

Then there is their best point, the older models are galvavised to the core, you see loads of these 940s, 960s, 740s, still on the road, my wife has a new car every three years (dissabled daughter) and you should see the difference the road bullies give you, you get cut up to hell in the wifes new car, but go out in the old Volvo and you see the differance, they stay clear of those four inch thick reinforced bumpers zzzzzzzzz.

I can endorse that about Volvo's zzzzz ! They are incredible cars. My old 740 saloon had done half a million miles, not a spot of rust on her, she was never washed inside or out. She was my mobile tack room, bales of straw and hay were flung in the boot, horse rugs, tack etc. in the back along with children and dogs. I never had a crash in her, but if I had, she would have protected and saved us all. Best car I ever had. She became so disreputable that in the end I sold her to an old lady for £25 and apparently she cleaned her up and she is still going strong - both old lady and car !!

The only problem was she only did about 20 to the gallon - the car, not the old lady !

You do not need a SUV for "safety reasons". The high driving position is all well and good until you realise that you're now obstructing the view for everyone else, and this buys you nothing when you're stuck in a tailback full of similarly large vehicles. If you want a high driving position, buy a Smart. It will do 50 to the gallon, as opposed to an SUV which does 50 to the mile. If you want crash resistance, buy an old Volvo. You could drive it head-on into a wall at 60mph and the wall comes off worst. Anyone that thinks they need an SUV to take two kids to school should be put down along with their kids to ensure such genetic material never tains the gene pool again.

You need an off-roader if you happen to need to drive off-road. You don't need it to get around town.

Most 4wd vehicles are unsafe, especially to the people they may hit! They are often unstable, in particular Land Rovers.
Some years ago in the USA, during car safety testing it was found that many 4 wd's were unsafe and failed to pass the passenger vehicle safety tests. After much lobbying by the manufacturers (Inc Landrover, Jeep and Mitsubishi) they were able to get the vehicles reclassified as Trucks and were therefore allowed to sell them in the States.

following that chain of logic, youd be quite happy for me to drive about in a tank because that would make me safer,

"I bought my great big 4x4 for safety reasons". What a load of bullshat, you bought them to show off and impress your so called friend and neighbours in the aim of getting one up on them. Now try telling me all of you lot can afford to run them, and your mortgages and credit card bills are all paid up. What a bunch of snob ridden tossers.
